Your statement is not consistent with reality. There are several countries that aren't "small island countries" that have achieved and maintained elimination without a vaccine. Their methods are similar and they are not some kind of secret trick. Likewise, there are "small island countries" like the UK who have been devastated.

The main reasons for me would be healthcare (inequity, cost, access, association with employment) and the broken political system (awful voting/electoral system, excessive influence of money, a 2 house system that stalls meaningful political reforms).
And the current intersection of both of those things when the country is getting rekt by a pandemic that a lot of countries around the world have figured out how to control.

Its up to prudent business owners to set aside a rainy day fund for unforeseen economic shocks.
I agree with this. It is not to cover all costs, just the costs of staff. The way it was done here in NZ was the business applied for a given number of staff and only gets it if they:
1) Pay 100% of the subsidy to their employees
2) Commit to paying all employees applied for at least the full subsidy amount, but use best endeavours to pay 80% of their pre-covid income

It's helped a lot with preventing unemployment. It's a lot cheaper for the economy if the links between workers nd employers are maintained during these downturns. Much faster to ramp back up (Our Q3 GDP growth was greater than our Q2 loss)

The better solution would have been to avoid this mass unemployment in the first place by putting in a better social safety net up front - a wage subsidy paid to all companies that lose a certain portion of revenue to last the duration of any period of relevant business restrictions, plus at least a few weeks beyond.

Yes, the vaccine has come to market faster than usual for a vaccine, but we've got phase 3 trial data from many thousands of participants that demonstrate it is safe at least in the short term (6 months). Delayed adverse events from immunisations are exceedingly rare to begin with, but post-market surveillance will still be going on to find that.

I enjoyed it quite a bit
The biggest step up it makes is in the dialogue and acting from both the main characters and supporting cast. The environments are really nice, but they feel less "assassin's creedy" than the older games.
They also did a better job of the present-day stuff in Origins than they had in Rogue, Unity and Syndicate.

My main advice would be to only do side missions that seem cool, or ones that are quired for progression, unlocks or achievements. They are ok, but there are too many of them and if you sink a lot of time on them you'll burn out.
People tell me AC Odyssey is even worse in that regard, but possibly the better game overall.

Yeah, but containing a novel virus within the country of origin is almost impossible. It takes weekr or months to even figure out that the new virus exists at all, by which point it's probably escaped. Italy is a good example of this, since they had their first cases before the virus was even sequenced and named. Blaming China for "giving it" to the US is pretty unreasonable.

Depends a lot on where I am. In the USA or a European country with relatively open travel from outside the area, I don't think I would aim for elimination. If I live somewhere with a lot of travel restrictions (most Asian countries, Aus, NZ, etc) I would aim for elimination.

For elimination the most important thing is a strong testing strategy (easily available, free, reasonable turnatound (<12h for positive tests) and good contact tracing mechansms. Ideally this also means people keep good records of their movements somehow, ideally with a phone app or similar solution.

For a suppression approach (e.g. in the US), testing is still important. The biggest thing is restrictions on ths most high-risk, rapid spreading situations. That means restrictions on indoor gatherings, especially where there's lots of close contact, where you might not know all the guests, or where there are raised voices and/or alcohol.
Mandatory masking for public transport and indoor environments other than the home (workplaces, retail) is probably next, since it's relatively low cost compared to its benefit.
Then you work your way up, as required by healthcare capacity, to restrictions on less risky/more costly things. So limits/bans on bars and restaurants, then rules about schools, workplaces and retail.

Edit: I ignored all the non-health policy side of this for simplicity. But there would need to be supports that cover people and businesses affected by shutdowns/restrictions as well as people who are required to isolate by public health.
