Bit of a different story. Filmmaking as a medium is barely 100 years old, and there have been a lot of advances not just in technology but in technique that have improved it. And even in literature, if you don't list anything from the last 50 years in the top 25, it's going to be suspect. When ranking films, it's just a massive red flag.

I've still yet to see Citizen Cane but I feel like it's not actually all it's cracked up to be. Probably hasn't been the best movie ever for the better part of the century; people are just too afraid to take it off their lists. I love old movies as much as the next guy but I feel like a lot of the hype for "Old Hollywood" is just that.

no, kane is pretty great.

Yeah favorite movie is something I can watch repeatedly whereas best movie is probably a 3 hour long slog with lots of backstory and information I would have to pay attention to constantly and be made aware of ahead of time. An objectively well produced movie that I need to be in a certain mood for in order for me to be able to fully enjoy it, because when it hits it fucking hits. Unfortunately thats not a mood Im in every day. Not looking for emotional drainage today sorry.

the "best movie" you are describing sounds awful dude

also what is this objectively shit

if we actually did this 'objective best movie ever' wouldn't we all have the same pick for best movie and everything would be nice and orderly? isn't that what it'd come down to if we looked at it this way?

Co-op stealth game.

You play as some bored millionaires who like to do art heists and jewel heists for fun and thrills.

Gotta work together to take down power grid (cameras, infra red lasers, etc), break into mansions or museums or what have you, sneak around, and get the goods. Come in through the sewers, ventilation, roof, windows, front door or back door... pick locks, obtain key cards, wear disguises, but no killing... you're good guys, okay??? Also gotta collect as much intel as you can before doing the heist. Or you can do no spying and just hop right in and probably fail.

Obviously there will be dozens of ways to perform each heist in a large open world area. I guess I'm thinking it'd be similar to Hitman but that may be because I just played it.

You're welcome and also please consider giving me royalties, thank you.

Ever since Roger Ebert died there hasn't been anyone to take the mantle of #1 Film Critic. Rise of YouTube in past few years has led to Stuckmann getting 1.9m subs. His videos regularly hit six figure views. Don't think any other critics can say they have multiple reviews every week getting that amount of traffic.

I would be glad to be proven wrong though. Seriously.

Just decided to watch his Citizen Kane review. Bad idea. Total garbage. Zero insight revealed at all whatsoever. Dude is just talking about the making of the movie and being like wow so technical! Very good!

Embarrassing that young people watch this stuff and take it seriously.

They should all learn to read in my opinion, so they can check out actual good film criticism and get a better understanding of cinema. They're doing themselves a disservice by sticking with Stuckmann, Jeremy Jahns, and Grace Randolph. There is so much better stuff out there. I'm begging you, please...

They seem to dedicate the same number of screens to big releases regardless of length. Shorter movies allow for more screenings, so there's that to consider.

Yeah, that's the only hole in my theory. It really is mind boggling though. Like, what epic tale are you trying to tell in WW1984 that requires 151 minutes?

I mean, Raiders of the Lost Ark is 115 minutes and that is arguably the best "modern" blockbuster. Even some contenders for that title, Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, are like 120-125 minutes. Why the fuck is there an extra half hour needed? For WW or any of these other newer superhero/action-adventure movies? I don't get it. There's no way you can't tell this story or, you know, a better one, in a shorter amount of time. I refuse to believe this is the only way.

I really feel like it's only these superhero flicks and other "epic movies" that have absurd running length.

If I look up something more recent, Sonic the Hedgehog for example, it's got a runtime of 99 minutes.

Dumb and Dumber To is 109 minutes.

Sure, but those are what makes money and therefore every studio will try to replicate that so they can also make money.

Also it is stunning that the two examples you came up with are Sonic the Hedgehog and Dumb and Dumber To.

Wasn't birth of a Nation like 5 hours or some shit?

Older movies were really long and had intermissions. The whole theater assembly line where you constantly shuffle people in and out of a theater complex is a more modern invention.

The Birth of a Nation is 3 hours and from 1915, not the 1930s.

Also yes there were obviously long movies back in the day too but they weren't as prevalent as they are now.

I'm convinced movies these days are so long is because studios want them to soak up as many screens in theaters as possible and kill off the competition on opening weekend.

Nothing to do with artistic merit and simply another way to make more money than the other studios. Of course this backfired since the movie isn't in theaters now and everyone I know says it's horrible.

Also most other blockbusters this long are bad. Just no reason for movies to be this long. 100 minutes is a fine length. Make something like that. Don't need to do a prologue that lasts 3-5 scenes before the movie *really* begins or do an epilogue that's ten minutes long after the movie *really* ended.

Honestly they should put me in charge of Hollywood. I would fix everything.
