Like others have already said, it supposedly only works if you want it to work.
That's really only half an explanation. Going into trance is a skill that you learn, the more you work at it, the easier it is. You can resist going into trance, somebody else can't force it on you, so if you're determined to "prove" that you can't be hypnotized, you won't be. The hypnotist is more of a guide to help you through the process, and isn't even a necessary part, you do the work of putting yourself into a trance.

You must not be Canadian. Winter tires are not a luxury here, winter is long enough to make them a valuable investment, they're cheaper than ending up in the ditch and fucking up your alignment or your front end. There are still a few people who don't use them here, those are the drivers we give a wide berth to.

The human population boom that elimination of all disease would cause would lead to horrible ecological disasters over the next hundred years, on top of the ones we're already causing. The resulting shortages in food and drinkable water would likely cause far more death than the diseases. There's already way too many of us for the planet to sustainably support, such a thing would require radical worldwide changes.

Back in the day I used to laugh at people paying for porn. I'd just call them "losers" or whatever, from the magazine buying weirdos to the pathetic/dumb enough people who give their credit card info to porn sites.

But nowadays I legit want to make a scientific study on these people. There's no logical explanation for someone being smart enough to have a job/disposable income in this competitive market, while simultaneously being dumb enough to waste it on pixels of women he'll never meet. Not even paying for sex, just pictures and videos of women. It boggles the mind.
At least buying magazines or DVDs is insurance for computer/phone/internet problems. Back in the day, I bought a few magazines because my computer was set-up somewhere that I wouldn't have the privacy. Nowadays that doesn't matter, I have my own apartment and dildos scattered across half of it

Call up a temp agency, if one doesn't have anything for you right now then go to the next one in line. I've quit multiple jobs with nothing lined up, and never ended up homeless because if you can walk into the temp agency office, they'll probably get you something. Anybody who's worked somewhere that employs a lot of temps can attest that if their standards for people were any lower, you'd need an excavator to find them.

I don't think anyone took it seriously. It was just fun. You can't pick up a real guitar with a bunch of friends and pretend that it's making the sounds of a studio recording. It would take you many years of practice and lots of expensive equipment to do that.
All you'll ever "sound" like is those exact studio recordings. That will never match up to the fun of a two hour long freeform jam, and you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get a good tone. Most people just lack the drive to stick with something that actually takes a bit of work if they're not being forced to do it.

The Shield of Balduran is totally gamebreaking against Beholders. But it's a situation where, if you don't have it, they'll fuck you up and if you do have it, then they can do almost nothing to you. The shield doesn't really have any other purpose in the game. It's just to specifically fuck over Beholders.
Elder Orbs are still a threat, the shield doesn't block their Imprisonment spell. The only thing I really haven't tried against them is Improved Invisibility + Spell Immunity: Divination, but that's such a broken combo against everything that I normally don't use it. They may or may not be able to use gaze attacks on Imp. Invisible characters. You also can't abuse invisibility shenanigans with a thief like you can with illithid because Beholders are immune to backstab, as they literally have eyes in the back of their head. The Cloak of Mirroring should work against their damage-dealing gaze attacks, just not the others like the petrification one, one failed save and it's over. Just trying to bumrush a group of beholders and try to murderize them fast before they can do too much doesn't ever work out well.

Fuck I hate Beholders.

Personally, in BG2 I prefer to load up on magic and skimp on the frontline a bit. When I take Aerie, she fills my cleric spot, the mage spells are a bonus to me. However, if you grab Imoen early enough then she fits the bill just fine.

Ivynn posted...
Good to know. Any specific quests that MUST be done before the rescue or does it matter?
Nothing that has to be done first, just make sure you're not underleveled because once you go, the only way to return back to Athkatla and Amn is to finish that part of the storyline. If you're going to use Imoen as your primary mage, save some quests for when you get back. I'd say the 1.2 million XP mark is probably a good time to go.
I will strongly recommend that you go to the merchant at the back of the Adventurer's Mart and buy the Shield of Balduran before you go, there is an optional dungeon that is loaded with Beholders with some sweet loot in it that you don't want to pass up. That shield is the "I win" button for fighting Beholders, who are otherwise one of the cruelest enemies to load up a dungeon with. There's really no other good way to deal with them, if you load up on protection spells they strip them off with ease with their anti-magic ray, they spam out damage spells as a regular attack, and the Elder Orbs cast Imprisonment which even the shield won't protect against.

Also, once you go, your captain is a character named Saemon Havarian. Always trust Saemon, even if you think you shouldn't.

Whenever I played mages in other games, I'd always spec into the damage dealing spells so seeing how this game it's more about buff/debuffing/statuses is taking a while to adjust to. Those are a lot of spell names you just threw at me and I don't know if I can properly use them all given the limited memorization space. What would you say are THE spells to have, like the absolute most important. With all these spells and only being able to use them once a day, it's feeling like my mages have to pretty much skip most fights and be saved for bosses. Is that the proper way to be doing it?
This is one of the big reasons I recommend having a single-class mage, mages scale hard with levels and a multiclass isn't going to keep up, needing to utilize the synergy with their other class to make up for it. A pure mage gets level 9 spells sometime before the end of Shadows of Amn, a multi gets there a bit before the end of the game. Dropping Anomen for Neera would give you a lot more spell slots to work with, Wild Mages also get an extra slot in every spell level.

I find Glitterdust to be conceptually hilarious. At that spell level, a wizard could fire a jet of pure flame from his fingertips, make someone invisible, or catch his enemies in a web, but yet he chooses to attack them with magical glitter instead. It's a versatile spell though, people always seem to forget that it also reveals invisible creatures in it's radius

Oh I hate when mages do that. Especially at the start of the fight and I can't Magic Missile in time. Then I have to wait for it to wear off while they cast their spells, usually stuff with status effects and I might as well restart since I'm pretty sure the battle's lost anyway. Will be on the lookout for this.
PfMW and the Mantle series have the same casting time as Magic Missile. You'll never interrupt it in time, and plenty of mages have it in a contingency which can't be interrupted, forcing you to Breach them twice in the same fight. Most spell scroll merchants should have Breach for sale, try the back of the Adventurer's Mart in Waukeen's Promenade.

Also, if you do a quest that involves obtaining illithium, do not turn the pure metal in. There is a smith named Cromwell in a second-story shop in the bottom-right corner of the Docks district that uses it to upgrade the Mace of Disruption. The Improved MoD is basically the "I win" button against the undead. He upgrades lots of other stuff too.

Mage Spells
Level 1
Magic Missile: Don't use this spell for the damage. Its quick casting time and multiple missiles make it really good for interrupting enemy spellcasters in the middle of casting. Once you get the Amulet of Power or the Robe of Vecna, it has no casting time at all.
Spook: It's the scaling penalty to saves against this spell that make it nice. Use it to take a high-value target out of a fight.

Level 2
Invisibility: All kinds of uses for this spell, especially for a thief/mage.
Melf's Acid Arrow: Not much resists acid damage, and the lingering damage makes it nice against spellcasters. Otherwise it takes too long to do all of its damage.
Mirror Image: Not a bad use of a level 2 slot, extra defense is always good. This plus Stoneskins can soak up a lot of physical damage.
Web: Affects you own party members unless they have Free Action. However, webbed targets are automatically hit by every attack, and castings of Web in the same area stack. It's a good crowd control spell, you can toss two of them into a Minor Sequencer which will be effective for large portions of the game.

Level 3
Haste: You really want all your frontliners to have more attacks per round (APR) so they can dish out some good single-target damage. The movement speed boost is an underappreciated effect.
Slow: Party-friendly, inflicts a very significant impairment on enemies, and has a nice penalty to saves against it. Slowed enemies facing your Hasted party are dead meat.
Melf's Minute Meteors: +5 fire weapon with 5 APR on demand.
Flame Arrow: Decent single-target damage.

Level 4
Stoneskins: Should be active at all times on every character capable of casting it. It lasts 12 hours in-game time, so you can cast it right before you rest to refresh you spell slots and still have it up for a long duration. Makes it so much harder to interrupt your spells, and blocks plenty of damage. Active at ALL times.
Greater Malison: Use this before spells that allow saves against their effects in tough fights.
Minor Sequencer: Two pre-cast spells up to level 2. Cleric/mages can also put cleric spells into sequencers.
Spirit Armor: Full plate mail for someone who can't wear it, including the mage.
Spider Spawn: The Sword Spiders you get at level 12 are a decent summon for a while.

Level 5
Breach: ALWAYS HAVE IT MEMORIZED! So many mages use Protection from Magical Weapons or Mantle at the start of a fight, you do not want to let them cast spells with impunity for 4 rounds while you wait for the duration to wear off. Mages are almost always the most serious threat in any fight, they need to die as fast as possible.
Animate Dead: Only good once you hit level 15 and it gives you a skeleton warrior.
Chaos: Another crowd control spell. Spellcasters under status effects like fear or confusion can't cast spells.

Level 6
Contingency: Lots of uses for this spell.
Improved Haste: Don't let the fact that it's only a single-target spell dismay you, it's the best buff for a frontliner in the game, especially a dual-wielder. Doubling your APR is a lot of extra damage.
Protection from Magical Weapons: Always have one memorized. Never have to worry about those stray enemies that get into melee range again.
Mislead: Another useful defensive spell, thief/mages can also use it for backstab cheesing.
True Sight: Invisibility shenanigans are annoying as fuck to deal with, this is the one button counter, clerics can cast it as well.

Level 7
Limited Wish: Only mages with a good wisdom score should ever cast it. Probably a good idea to look up what each wish does before you pick it.
Project Image: Your projected image is technically a summon, so every casting of this spell gives you a free copy of your spellbook.
Spell Sequencer: 3 precast spells up to level 4. I personally like Greater Malison + 2x Slow or the triple Skull Trap bomb. Cleric/mages can tons of possibilities.

Level 8
Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting: Party-friendly AoE damage.
Spell Trigger: 3 precast level 6 spells.
Symbol, Stun: Stunned enemies are dead meat, and it comes with a penalty to saves against it.

Level 9 & 10 (because they use the same spell slots)
Chain Contingency: So many uses for this. Prep for a big battle with a triple Horrid Wilting on the enemy.
Time Stop: Especially deadly on a fighter/mage, because all their attacks hit.
Improved Alacrity: Cast this after Time Stop, be sure to be wearing the Amulet of Power (-1 casting time) and the Robe of Vecna (-4 casting time.) Those two items make all spells with cast time 5 or less instant cast, turn on Pause on spell cast in your options and this combo will enable you to blast out your spellbook all at once.
Wish: Some of the wishes are really strong, including a free rest. Only high wisdom casters should use this (or drink a potion to boost it)
Summon Planetar: Best summon in the game, always useful to have one in a fight.

Enemies seem more dangerous this time around. Like those hulk things. They start the fight by hurling a confusion spell at you. How are you supposed to avoid that? Had to restart a few times because they kept confusing my strong guys leaving the weaker ones to get merked
Level 5 cleric/druid spell Chaotic Commands. It protects against a lot of nasty status effects and has a good duration that scales with levels. If it isn't a physical effect, Chaotic Commands probably protects against it.

I think I need better armor for Minsc and Jaheira, they're going down a little too quickly for my liking.
Just give them unenchanted full plate and a ring/amulet/cloak of Protection. You can't wear those items with enchanted armour, and saves ultimately become more important as the game goes on and enemy THAC0 keeps climbing. I'll also suggest you load up your level 3 spell slots with Haste and Slow, and cast the level 1 priest spell Bless liberally.

I recruited Aerie and replaced Nalia with her.
You're going to want to recruit a single-class mage. Multis take forever to get the highest level of spells, some of which are stupidly powerful when you know how to use them. I personally like a single-class mage and a multi in every party. I'm going to do a write-up on magic for you in a separate post tonight.

Another useful multi-class character is Jan Jansen. He is a gnome Thief/Illusionist. He and Minsc are the two primary comic relief characters. They're both pretty funny. He is great at both roles and he has some unique gadgets that are unique to him.
Illusionists also lose Abjuration magic in the EE, and Jan is squishy. Conjurors (like Edwin) also lose Abjuration. Most protective spells, and all but one spell that removes enemy magical protections are Abjuration magic.

The only spears you can really find in SoA are Spear of the Unicorn, +2 and immune to charm and hold, and Impaler, +3 and +10 Pierce damage per hit.
You can find the parts to Ixil's Spike in Watcher's Keep, you just gotta go pretty deep down to find them, you can start Throne of Bhaal with a +6 weapon that pins enemies to the ground on a failed save, on every hit. The first floor of Watcher's Keep has some pretty decent loot in it relative to the difficulty of the fights, I like to hop over there pretty quickly because I don't have to finish the entire floor all at once. You can get a +3 dart that returns to your hand, along with quivers of infinite +1 arrows and bolts and the Flesh Golem manual (free summon once per day)

is spiciness like a defense mechanism for peppers to keep most animals from eating them?
Hot peppers evolved capsaicin so that just birds would eat them, the seeds just go through them quickly and without being chewed up. Mammals with teeth designed to grind plant material are strongly discouraged from eating them, so a lot more of the seeds survive. I'd guess birds are probably more efficient at dispersing seeds over a wider area than typical mammals are, as well.

Personally, I'd dump Nalia after her quest is done and grab Neera. In your party, I'd also dump Anomen for Aerie (she's in the circus tent in Waukeen's Promenade, the area you emerged from Chateau Irenicus) You've got enough frontline bulk between your fighter, Jaheira, and Minsc, you'll want some more magical firepower. Anomen's frontline ability will start depending heavily on buffing himself with spells (Holy Power, Righteous Magic, and Draw Upon Holy Might, cast them in that order) and he just doesn't get the Attacks Per Round to keep up with the actual fighters.

It's a shame Jaheira's two best spells compete with each other for spell slots (Insect Plague and Ironskins) and the really wonky Druid level progression table will leave her stuck at druid level 14 for a llooooonnnnggg time, so she'll be stuck with only three level 5 spell slots. She absolutely needs to have Ironskins up at all times in hostile areas once she has it, it drastically improves her survivability is close combat. Insect Plague is the best spellcaster shutdown spell. Even if they turn invisible (and enemy mages will do this to you frequently) just target the enemy next to them instead, it still spreads to invisible enemies. Don't memorize Mass Cure on her, use Call Woodland Beings instead, the nymph it summons has one casting of Mass Cure.

Did you take Yoshimo? Take Yoshimo.

Also, magic gets better in BG2 because you get more spell slots and higher level spells. Trust me, magic is OP AF when you learn how to use it in this game. Protective spells are your friend, they make the difference between a mage being the number one threat in any encounter, or dying before they can cast a spell. Make sure your mages all learn Stoneskins and have it up any time you might face hostilities, including night-time in the city. Make sure all your mages learn Breach, because enemy mages love casting Protection from Magical Weapons or Mantle, strip their protections and focus them down fast. In a party, buffs, debuffs, and crowd-control spells are the most effective, AoE damage spells are typically only good for starting a fight, unless you stack resistance to that damage type on your whole party. You can make your whole party immune to fire purely through cleric or druid spells.
