The reason I'm saying this is that as an ex-alcoholic who suffered from terrible acid reflux throughout the final year of drinking, I found out by accident afterwards (thanks to a gastroscopy for other reasons) that it had left me with Barrett's oesophagus, which is potentially pre-cancerous and I now need to be routinely monitored for the rest of my life. Managed to struggle through the first period on my own, but the second wave was much worse. I had some serious concerns for my mental health, it felt as if my entire personality was disintegrating and I gradually became less and less functional. In the end I bit the bullet and sought help. Took several months of CBT with a clinical psychologist who taught me three hugely important things: (1) it wasn't going to kill me, (2), I wasn't going insane, and (3) the way to break the power that the attacks have over you is to focus on symptom management.
