WOOOOOOOO I'm Back to Rise is a ***9.2*** and my #2 song in the contest!!! In my high school years, rap & hip-hop was the cool thing to listen to and was a HUGE influence on me growing up - I guess that's what happens when you go to high school near Toronto right as Drake is blowing up! Though I've fallen out of the whole scene by now, I instantly fell in love with this Mick Gordon banger when it came up in BOST 5 last year! The first verse is an incredible start to the song after the intro and just a genuinely great rap, literally every line ends on a multi-syllable rhyme which makes my ears go MMMMMM that's good stuff. Overall the song is just a beautiful marriage between Omega's performance and Mick Gordon's heart-pounding production, becoming most apparent during the chorus which is the cheesiest thing ever but it totally works!!! Repetition is a classic way of building tension in music, and the three bars of "I'm back to X" go perfectly with the ascending chord progression in the instrumental before there's a switch to the "I feel on fire" line as the percussive pitch-bendy part at the high end of the bass drops out to create a little fill/cadence in the last bar AHHHHH the words are so dumb but it's so catchy

I actually have a weird relationship with this song where I almost never listen to it - because of the length, yes, but also because it's never what I want when I'm in a "VGM mood" and am going through my VGM collection...maybe I should just group it with my hip-hop collection instead.

The instruments and style remind me of the Bonobo song I nominated for rwlh's topic. My natural inclination with this song is to imagine an indoor jam session, but apparently Anka is a city in the game which works just as well!

2 days of bottom options, this is unprecedented!!!

I've always listened to the (Dynamic - Vocals) Automata uploads because those would be the top search results before Squeenixgeddon. Back then, I only really put City Ruins and Amusement Park on rotation since they had the most YT views, and have been really attached to the Rays of Light version ever since! Today's actually my first time listening to the OST version and the different sections flow a lot better than I thought! Interesting that it doesn't even go in order of Quiet=>Medium=>Dynamic=>Dynamic w/Vocals or something. The big percussion hit at 3:22 in particular is a great moment, I guess little transitions like that were added for the soundtrack?

Voted for English Version in the poll since I like a lot of J'Nique Nicole songs - Memories of Dust, Weight of the World EN, and City Ruins RoL. Amusement Park is definitely a worthy challenger though!

Uh oh all bottom votes that can't be good, the last time this happened I went 0-3. With triple vocals on Planet X/Cradle/Psycho Soldier...and one of them was against Senko no Ronde...oh god...

Sanctuary-MA-RI-A feels like a song I should be tired of by now but I'm really not!!! Not just the chords, but the voice leading in the "soprano"/"top notes"/"melody" against that progression is really typical (I usually think of All of Me by John Legend). I could play the main parts of the song back in my head and it sounded pretty much exactly as I remembered it, but I still felt fully immersed and didn't get bored at all while listening! Sometimes you just crave that one specific brand of cheap ice cream, one that you've had hundreds of times even though it's no different from the other brands, but you know exactly what to expect and just won't take anything else to hit that spot of comfort food!

Interestingly, I'm not big on the instruments and don't expect I would like the soundtrack in general, but they happen to be used in a way that I find appealing here!

Ahh rhythm-changer is such a treat for the ears! I think these rhythmically complex songs really click with me when they have simple parts that repeat independently but come together to make some very engaging interlaced patterns. It's like I'm in a room full of little machines all doing their own thing, but at any time I can listen for a specific part and go "oh cool, you're still there". Kinda the same idea as machine instruments like Marble Machine or the Animusic videos, but the parts are simple and distinct enough that I can pick them out without the need for visuals!

Full Steam Ahead and La Mer both made round 4 in VGMC 4! In "Overworld Adventure's" case, it was denied retirement in a 06-29 loss to Dark Cloud Main Theme, ouch!

Full Steam Ahead in the Realm Overworld Adventure really takes me back! I must've found some of the popular Spirit Tracks songs on YouTube right around 2010-11, a bit after the game was released! 0:45 is such a wonderful moment that feels like the train has just passed over a big hill with clouds and sunbeams emerging in the distance. I feel like it lands so well precisely because of the preceding section from 0:31-0:45, which is just a shining example of a "pre-chorus" that functions as its own phrase while also setting up for what comes next - the sharp-eyed quarterback pass that leads to a long-distance touchdown!

Light certainly didn't make the third match easy for me! Sometime last year I woke up with a musical riff stuck in my head, and jammed out to it on the keyboard for a few weeks - I thought I was putting my own twist on the Sky Tower opening notes! Now I'm pretty sure I was just half-remembering that 4+4 note grouping from Light...not to mention there were like 3 more songs in noms with a similar motif. Some people claim that the brain is incapable of creating new faces in your dreams, I wonder how much that applies to musical ideas!

Apex of the World is a ***9.1*** (wow!) (that's high) (what could it mean?) and my rank #3 in the contest!!! I realized that my top 3 songs are going to show up in countdown order, so hey why not announce them as they come? Discovering this song in last year's noms took me down the deepest of rabbit holes where I looked up all the motifs it borrows from other Three Houses songs, checked out more of the OST, listened to both versions of Edge of Dawn trying to decide which one was better (it's Japanese), looked up the lyrics to both, found out they don't play in the credits to Crimson Flower because it's a tragic song meant to make you sympathize with Edelgard, read the wiki pages for what happens on each route, read about the main characters and Rhea, listened to A Funeral of Flowers (good song), craved more stories about feuding...feudal houses, and proceeded to binge the first season of Game of Thrones (way late to the party on that one). Thank you Apex of the World, very cool

I guess I can talk about how I stumbled upon Ikou during my search for potential first-day noms - I wrote it down as "Opening Movie BGM 3" or something from the video title lmao. As long as I'm only forced to hear RFTM up to 4 times a year, I don't think I'll ever get tired of it! Favourite Touhou song, favourite Touhou song title, favourite use of ZUNpets (though I've heard maybe 15 Touhou songs)...it brings such a wonderfully joyful energy to the bracket that I always look forward to hearing! The melody is really easy to get into from the start and the song continues to build on itself by introducing new instrumental lines, slowing down and speeding up the percussion, and finally bringing them all together for the frantic finale!

Do you hear music? I really liked 14.3 BY in last year's noms and hoped it'd get in over the title track, which didn't happen but I made a note to check out Outer Wilds once it came to Steam. 14.3 just felt like such an emotionally powerful ending theme that I had to experience it in context! As it turns out, my expectation with ending themes is that you hear them right after the high point of the game, the culmination of the story it's trying to tell - Outer Wilds does not do that! It's much less linear than the traditional three-act structure, so while the game is incredible and people should absolutely check it out, I actually can't enjoy 14.3 as much as when the context was a mystery and I was left to fill in the gaps with my imagination! Now I just find myself wanting the song to be more otherworldly and strange, which it only gives you a tiny trickle of at 2:14...at least 3:09 still gets me like it always did!

Well, after trying my song-a-day thing for a week, I think I'll continue with it! Though I certainly reserve the right to do smaller write-ups when I have some busy days, heck I might just give out a "song of the day" award without saying anything more...

Looting the Louvre was the clear choice today! I smiled to myself when I went to check that Flamander/Cathode had a nomination on it, because I remember they also backed DJ Hero - Groundhog and Space Invaders blabla - Invader Girl the last two years! These songs with in-game sound bites always feel so fun and immersive, and provide a really unique listening experience (apparently "sound bytes" is incorrect what). YOU MADE IT OUT THIS TIME BUT THIS ISN'T THE END *ahem* Louvre doesn't quite do the same thing, but those trumpet hits are still enough to make me gleefully imagine some cartoony minigame where you have to press B on the beat or whatever.

Also have to say that I love love love the seeding in match 2! Though I feel comfortable with my vote, I think the contrast between the songs is really great and I specifically felt that Let It Die was the song I wanted to hear when I got bored of Sanctuary-SHU, and that Sanctuary-SHU was what I wanted to hear when I got bored of Let It Die! Hope it does a bit better than Saudade from last year...

Neo Kobe City is back, baby! This is another song I got into in my 2017 Klagmar days along with Tears Stained Eyes, and was like VGM can sound like THAT??? Most cyberpunk/retrofuturistic/synthwave-y city music I've heard goes for something dark, shady, and mysterious, while this song totally nails the image of a lively city that you'd just love to hang around for a while (much more HOME aesthetic than AWAY aesthetic!). Slap reverb on everything for extra style points!

Today I'll actually pick my favourite song of the day for once and go with Weight of the World! I've dulled myself to this song before from overexposure (without playing the game, mind you), but it still felt fresh and exciting when I listened to it today! I'm happy that fans of the superior version can have their moment after JP version made last year's bracket, End of YorHa died in noms year 13, and both EN and JP versions died in noms year 12! I've always liked English for its air of quiet determination coloured by desperation and self-doubt, and think it works perfectly with the backing track. That low piano hit at 3:44 always feels so rude, she's having a very poignant thought and the song is just like NOPE THERE IS NO HOPE FOR YOU

I'd looove to be dropped into some abandoned factory or sci-fi facility where I can just climb equipment, pull levers, and pick up tools to this song. PAIN, this day is pain. I guess the votes weren't hard, but I still really like Twelfth Chapter and Planet Wisp and rue that they weren't seeded elsewhere.

As for today's featured song......surprise, it's The Rain Formerly Known As Purple! I'm sorry for neglecting you my baby, I totally thought someone else would have you covered for the SupraDarky awards, and then you didn't even show up in the Hindsight ranking!!! God I remember being so into post-rock 4 years ago when I was starting to get back into VGM, and hearing Coalescence in Klagmar's #2,673 upload just blew me away. What an eye-opener to how diverse VGM can truly be! (ear-opener?) A few weeks later, YouTube commenter azuarc posted their final advertisement of some VGM tournament on Klagmar #2,694, and now I'm here! Prain-ce doesn't quite capture the same magic, but it still provides that great experience of patiently building up before ending you on a brain-melting payoff! For me, that moment starts at 4:48 and lasts to the end, when the final melodic line begins to establish itself before being joined by the lead guitar. Another thing I REALLY love in long songs is when they finish with a drawn-out outro where you can just BASK in the glorious afterglow for a while as you realize the experience will soon be over (I also get this from This Silence Is Mine). It feels so damn cinematic and in the case of Rain, I even imagine a big IMAX logo accompanying that last note. I'm listening using the bracket playlist this year and it really is a nice experience! Beats having to open a bunch of links and switching tabs between each song.

Which song to talk about today...let's go with Fuse Man Stage! Maybe I've just been picking the song I feel bad for the most...anyway, I love Azure Sadness and know it's the higher seed, so having forgotten how Fuse Man sounded I was pleasantly surprised today! The transition/fill at 0:34 in particular is a really fun lead-in to the next section, and the synth bass with the effects keeps reminding me of the one from Celeste's Golden. I kept playing the song a whole bunch of times after deciding my votes, it loops smoothly so I can just keep stuffing it into my ears like bite-sized candy! That analogy sounded better in my head...overall, I just wish the loop was longer because I feel the song could do so much more with added development!

On another note, Fuse Man may be sweet candy but Azure Sadness is a spicy quesadilla and has to take my vote. It's adventurous and fun, and just feels more like a complete meal YA FEEL ME??????

Welcome to year 15, everybody! Finally, we have as many VGMCs as there are Final Fantasies...interestingly, FF songs have featured pretty often in the first three matches of the contest - 9 out of 15 times, in fact! Back in VGMC 1, it was To Zanarkand, who beat future finalist Trombe! 28-22 and eventually claimed the FIRST ever retirement slot over Lonely Rolling Star!

I'm using the first week to trial a new thing where I pick one song to highlight for the day; it'll be pretty arbitrary, whichever one I think "deserves" it. It's a good excuse to try writing about at least one song!

And with the #1 pick of the VGMC 15 draft, I select...The First Thing! This song is really interesting for making you think about "blues," but also music in general in a way that can only be achieved with spoken lyrics. I've had passing interests in related art forms - spoken word, slam poetry, guided meditation - but I can't say I truly enjoy them as much as familiar genres of VGM. I do love a good underdog though - rock on, you weird bone man!

Other tidbits:

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I thought Collapsed Expressway would have way more hype coming into the contest? I remember SupraDarky uploaded it, Lena Raine featured it on 140VGM, VGM Online gave it an award...okay, maybe I'm placing too much stock in obscure appearances

I am *somewhat* confident that I can actually get one of my bracket retirees to retire this year. Feel like I have some good candidates in Apex of the World, Fogbeasts, Id ~ Purpose (yes really), and Paradise (Stay Forever).

Once again, I don't see any R1 matches that are death for me, but each bracket definitely has a matchup where I wish both songs could move on!

A: Rain Formerly Known As Purple/Twelfth Chapter (for the record, I do not like Exhausted)
B: Stay Gold/Wheels of Aurelia AND RFTM/Gentle Slope (wtf)
C: Shackled Wolves/String Theocracy (I still have Apex so I guess this is okay)
D: A Beautiful Song/Give Me (great match of contrasts, not so great for me)
