I can't imagine why. It's perfectly reasonable to want to watch people who claim their position is right 100% of the time every time squirm when rock-solid counter examples materialize. The amount of effort these folks put into gaslighting everyone into believing that negative stories about cops are either exaggerated or a misunderstanding is unreal. I'd like to see at least one or two of them admit they are wrong.

Whatever bro, you probably believe in atoms which are supposedly all empty space and yet no one has seen an actual atom either.
We do, in fact, actually have images of individual atoms. Saying that atoms are mostly empty space is misleading. The actual physics going on at the atomic level is hideously complicated and unintuitive because things at the subatomic scale don't behave much like the larger things we are used to. But what atoms do together to form the materials we interact with every day is much more accessible and interesting. Chemistry requires neither faith nor belief.

The fact of the matter is that mainstream science and the field of academia has just as good of answers as the church when it comes to where we came from.
The Catholic Church opposes neither the big bang nor evolution. So for many people, the church is telling them the same thing the science is. Science is the systematic study of the world around us. Assume the Bible is God's Word. If all investigations into the natural world give an explanation for how things work that is different from how you think the Bible describes the nature of the world, how is that a problem with science or the Bible? Isn't it a problem with your own limited interpretation of scripture?

TrollTrace posted...
The brightest thinkers right now lean towards the spiritual and not towardsmainstream science
You keep using the phrase "mainstream science" as though there is anything other than just science. If you've never taken a college level science class before, and especially if you were home schooled (the books are horrid), I'd encourage you to do so. There are actually now good free textbooks out there for both biology and chemistry (I'd recommend chemistry).

When someone tries to peddle science that isn't "main stream", they often make all kinds of bizarre claims about what the science in a given field actually says, and make the people who devote their lives to studying things out to be idiots. It's really not like that. Theories in science are overarching explanations of why things work as backed up by evidence. If someone wants to make a bold new claim about how some aspect of nature works, it has to square with the laws of nature we already understand or it's garbage.

The novel I enjoyed the most was Desperation.

Best book is a toss up between Pet Semetary and Salem's Lot.
Best short story easily goes to Apt Pupil, though I enjoyed Little Sisters of Eluria more.

A lot of King's works are bad or just OK, but when he is on point, his books are absolutely incredible.

And it wasn't like that last time either. Last time with Tori (the girl who 1 night standed me) she seemed to like things differently. My foreplay wasn't doing it for her and she pretended to have a good time, but when I texted her for the follow up date she responded like a business reply e mail about how she is no longer interested in maintaining a connection.

I got super offended and demanded an explanation, and she went off on me. Told me I was the worst sex she ever had, and that the whole time she was afraid I was going to start strangling or beating her or something. She told me it was pathetic that I couldn't get hard, and that she turned around and ****ed someone else the next night, and that she only used me because she was horny and now that she has someone that can **** her properly, I can go **** myself!

We're constantly told that the world doesn't owe us a thing. Why should workers who are making more money collecting the free "don't starve to death during this pandemic" money from the government go back to work for less money? That's not lazy, it's common sense. The government isn't being crazy generous or anything either---there is no political will for generosity. Wages are just that low and come with no benefits (and often very few these days even for skilled labor).

The only way that make sense is if the other teacher is trying to cut the students some slack. Which is the wrong thing to do if the students need to take a very strict test where this kind of nonsense won't get a passing grade. It has been a long time since I studied English in college (even then, it was just a couple of classes) but there is no way this is correct--or if it is somehow correct under arcane grammar rules--correct in the sense that anyone would write this way.

One thing that bothers me is the fact that your boss isn't a native English speaker. I've heard that office politics in Asian countries is even more brutal than what we have here, so I'd be a little concerned that maybe your coworker is trying to build the case that you don't know English well to gain favor with the boss or even to maybe get you fired. I'd worry about this even more if the coworker is new and you've been there for a while.

If you're under pressure to help the students save face and not grade them too harshly, give it a passing mark but explain what she should have done instead. But that only holds if most of the students are writing things like that. If most of the class is doing better and this student doesn't merit special consideration, then mark it wrong and correct her.

If absolutely no one will do a job, there is something wrong with the job. To suggest otherwise would be crazy. A relative of mine is always saying that people don't know how to work these days. It's one thing if a job has a lot of turnover every few months---that would mean that the work and pay were OK but that employees are on the lookout for something better. But when people flat out won't apply for a position, or apply but only stay for a couple of shifts, something must be wrong with the job.

If there is a $1 trillion factory job problem, then there is something wrong with an awful lot of factory jobs out there.

Logically, B makes sense. But if someone hurt me or my family, I want revenge and I want that fucker to go through A.
This is not a sufficient explanation for why US prisons (and the Justice System) in general are so terrible. Anger, fear, and a desire for retribution are universal human feelings, yet many other civilized countries have made very different choices regarding how prisons work and who goes there, and the results are almost universally better for both prisoners and society at large.

Giant_Aspirin posted...
mostly this, except it shouldn't be some place people want to go to.
If all it takes to make prison a desirable place to be is humane treatment and some kind of possible future when you leave for a person, then our society has collectively failed that person. As the TC points out, countries with nicer prisons and a genuine focus on giving offenders a future don't see many repeat customers. The US Justice System currently has something of a looping conveyor belt going on, and that's bad for everyone.

Mr_Karate_II posted...
A lot of people are already monsters before they even go to prison. People like pedophiles, rapists and murderers can't be rehabilitated. You just don't stop being pedophile, rapist or murderer one day.
Actually, some countries like Norway have had remarkable success rehabilitating "monsters". But let's put that aside for a moment. How many offenders like this actually exist? Just a little over half of the US prison population is in prison for anything even allegedly violent (you can be essentially forced to accept a plea deal for whatever a prosecutor likes if you can't afford bail or decent legal counsel).

PoundGarden posted...
Don't know, don't care. Not going to prison sooo
Cops routinely arrest people on trumped up charges that they are then convinced to plead guilty to when they can't afford bail or a good lawyer. There are quotas to meet, after all. Vindictive people sometimes like to use the police as a weapon to punish people and make them compliant. Each time a false claim is made against you and you interact with law enforcement, you face a chance of getting in trouble even if you haven't done anything wrong.
