He is also not very intelligent and seems to be fully aware of this. Heres the kicker.... he literally blames his low intelligence on him being black. His audience then eats it up like "yea! Finally a black guy who tells the truth how it is!"

The main problem with people like Burr and Rogan is that they don't see underneath the mask of the right-wing lunatics crying the loudest about cancel culture.

There is a real conversation that can be had about the harm of cancel culture. But you aren't going to have that conversation in good faith with people like Gina, who want us to be in a society where trans people are cancelled out of existence.

I don't think Burr is doing this intentionally. He is just a fucking moron who is out of his depth when it comes to politics.

I'm an engineer, and every single time I deal with a unionized employee within our company (drafters or facilities), I hate our interactions. They never have a sense of urgency to them; it takes literally weeks to get anything done (getting a desk installed, getting a door installed, getting ethernet drops, etc.). And if there are any issues (not done correctly, or way past the quoted time), we literally can't even talk to them. We talk to their managers, who talk to their union reps, and then that finally gets filtered down to the unionized employee, who doesn't give a shit.

We had a ticket in to get a TV mounted on a wall in a conference room, and that was finally done ~1 year after we issued the ticket. It's insane.

You'd be begging for a union if your company had working conditions like Amazon warehouses.

It's not about trying to justify the actions of nazis. It's that people have this cartoon in their heads where they themselves would obviously have the foresight to not be the ones that are nazis and yet some of these same people fall for blatant fascist propaganda that is strikingly similar to what we saw in the rise of nazi Germany. Just be aware of it and be on guard.

scar the 1 posted...
But what irks me about uncritically calling Musk's companies innovative (and maybe this is tied to the cult of Musk's persona? People are definitely claiming that Musk is an innovator) is that there's this idea that they are way more innovative than they are, and the related thought that you espoused, that they're pushing society forward. This is what I originally took issue with in your post. In fact, before we got bogged down in technicalities of how innovative each technical feat is, what I said was that "What he's doing isn't innovation", which I stand by. Innovation goes on in his companies, I'll concede that. Elon is not doing it. What I went on to say was reservations I had against your claim that he's pushing our society forward with his companies.
What's often implied is that "without Musk's companies, these particular innovations wouldn't happen". I don't think that's true at all. Like I've been saying throughout, most of the tech is already there. A lot of it is incremental improvement, which is done all the time.

The thing about Elon that I find alarming is that he overhypes what his companies are doing and then his cult following eats it up without questioning it. THAT is what is being criticized.

"Well technically Tesla does software updates so that literally fits the definition of innovation"

That doesn't at all address the concerns being levied towards Elon.

I feel like I'm rambling between two points: "pushing society forward" and "innovation". Sorry if I'm not making a lot of sense. To try and condense my point I think the tl;dr is that IMO innovation is often overblown

Kinda what I was trying to convey a few posts ago.

Elon fans don't have a tempered down or realistic view of innovation. They think he is accelerating humanity forward at fucking lightspeed. So to hide behind the strict definition of "innovation" is running away from the point. The point is that Elon grossly oversells what he is actually accomplishing and he has a cult-like following that is highly concerning.

Suikoden420 posted...
This is answer i was looking for. So is this understanding important for rocket trajectories? If so, how does it change outside of earths atmosphere?

Gabriel's horn specifically doesn't have any application. I just meant that, in a general sense, understanding infinite series and convergence was important for the development of calculus and thus important for physics and engineering.

It started to become very apparent after Joseph Fourier discovered what is not called Fourier Series and now Fourier Analysis is probably one of the most important part of mathematics to engineering and physics. Literally everything piece of modern technology you can imagine has Fourier Analysis involved somewhere.

So like... if you want to send signals to your rocket to tell it to not crash and explode into something you need Fourier Analysis for that and understanding Fourier Analysis, and Mathematical Analysis in general, requires a rigorous understanding of calculus. Thus we were required to sort out the kind of 'paradoxes' we found in examples like Gabriel's horn.

Robot2600 posted...
A paradox is something that seems untrue or unintuitive but can be proved as true.

In this case, it's unintuitive that you can fill the inside of the horn with paint but you cannot cover the containing surface in paint. So yes, it is a paradox.

paradox
/perdks/

1. a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.

I think what that poster means is that this paradox is fully explained whereas there are paradoxes that still exist in math and physics that have not been explained yet. There is certainly a difference between those two categories.

Whats the value is thinking about this?

It was very important to figure stuff like this out actually.

For 100+ years after Newton and Leibniz invented calculus it wasn't on a rigorous footing at all because they didn't understand the nature of infinity and convergent series, which is like... the heart of calculus. One guy during that time period thought he had a "proof" that god existed by showing that 0=1 using series that weren't absolutely convergent.

I know it doesn't seem important but it is CRITICAL to understand stuff like this if you want things like statistics or physics to work.

The tails of the normal distribution (the bell curve) also go off to infinity and yet the area under it is finite.
