Attorney time. She basically just wanted all the money she could get and a schedule to her preference. It was all a game. She was trying to figure out how to swingle keeping the car as well. She was never negotiating an agreement in good faith. I told her to get the fuck out. She is claiming I can't kick her out and she can stay as long as she wants until she is ready. I made it clear to get out and all the stuff I was gonna give her to help her was all staying now and off the table. Getting an attorney Monday to fight for me having 51/49 custody. I don't want child support off of her like she did off or me however. I no longer feel bad about things. I no longer am depressed. She showed her true colors and made me realize I was blind to her true self all along. Now I don't care about her anymore and I am going down fighting. Everything is being laid on the table. No pulling punches now to be nice.

Rittenhouse should NOT have been there, and he SHOULD be punished, but he was not the first or only person to shoot a gun.

At least two other people shot weapons, only one of which was identified (they said it was a warning shot for Rittenhouse to back off).

I don't know the laws on open carry by age, but I will admit the situation could have been stopped if he wasn't allowed to carry and they'd enforced that.

I mean for sure it couldve gotten messier and I know there were complicating circumstances. But again between these two cases it stands out to me how much the cops underacted to Rittenhouse rather than necessarily overacting in this scenario.

I dont want any one to be shot by a cop but the one very limited scenario where I am most likely to understand is when someone has what a reasonable person would perceive as a deadly weapon in the hands of most people and is pointing or about to use that on another civilian.

Weve spent like 200 posts debating this but if I had to guess literally everyone in the topic agrees with this sentiment.

Also I dislike the Zimmerman comparison because there is a huge difference between stalking and harassing a kid who wasnt doing anything when you were specifically told not to and arriving on scene immediately before someone was about to stab someone else.

It matters to me here that the person at risk was another teenage girl and not a cop or a guy who fancies himself one.

This is honestly such a weird debate for me because I agree there is widespread abuse and that the system needs to change and there is undeniable an inequitable distribution of justice and people should protest and fight for that change. I just think in this very specific and very limited case that the cop didnt really do anything wrong. I dont even necessarily want to change anyones mind about this case because I think it is relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things but I just like to argue so here I am.

IDK, I feel like I hold a couple of opinions concurrently.

I think the only police who should carry firearms are a specialized and highly trained unit - think like a SWAT team - that is generally only mobilized for situations that honestly call for it, like an active shooter situation or something.

No situation that ends in a fatality like this is an "ideal" outcome but given the facts presented here I don't think I could say the officer acted grossly irresponsibly as is so often the case on an institutional level.

While I wouldn't have a problem with a general ban on guns, I think that ship sailed a long time ago here. There's too many guns here and gun culture is too ingrained. That said, I do think there should be very strict regulations on them. Background checks and the like are the easy, no-brainer stuff that we somehow don't have because America. I'm talking extensive training and the like.

Being a realist even that's probably a no-go politically, but just talking hypothetically you 100% introduce along with this a buyback program to encourage those who don't want to go through all that to relinquish their guns. You do not just blanket ban them and leave it at that. You need to provide an incentive for people to turn them over if they're not willing to go through the necessary training. Unfortunately, the gun nuts won't comply and I'm sure the GOP and NRA would encourage more reasonable people to not do so either but this is how you approach it and I suspect it'd be a fairly successful program.

I think this is where I'm mostly at too. I know it sounds defeatist, but I have no hope of a blanket ban working. Not just logistically, but I mean from a legal perspective. How do you have a general ban on guns with fifty democratic votes in the senate (one of which is Manchin) and a conservative supreme court?

I think buy back/improved gun laws are probably our best hope at the moment.

I don't want to say I'm fully siding with the "ban all guns" argument but Australia did ban guns in fairly recent history and that didn't turn into a lawless hellhole where bad guys with guns were killing everyone.

Well, the problem is he's still quite a distance away when the victim literally begins the process of attempting to stab another girl with a knife. He didn't actually have the time or chance to deescalate it or deal with her in any other way. If he didn't act in that exact moment, from a distance, she stabs the girl.

EDIT: That's why I'm having a tough time thinking of what I'd expect the alternative to be in a situation like that. If he doesn't act and instead takes the time to move in, somebody's getting stabbed likely several times. And it's not the cop, it's another civilian who didn't appear to actually be taking part in the physical altercation leading up to it.

Yeah, I can't say I really fault the cop here for this one. This isn't a murky "I FEARED FOR MY LIFE!" against some guy charging at them, but that the victim seconds away from possibly causing grievous bodily harm with a deadly weapon to another (unarmed, it appeared) person.

It is still a tragedy that a 15 year old girl is dead. But I don't know what else the cop was supposed to do there. I also agree with KP that this is an example why even cops should be in favor of body cams because I'm not sure I would've believed the cop's side of things without seeing the footage.

Like if we had a good healthcare system, what sort of thing would we see the most improvement in?

Something like colon cancer. Something that is:

1) Detectable early
2) Treatable
3) Put off or ignored by people with lack of income

Those are the disease the US sucks on compared to other countries. I could be totally off base, but if I had to guess survival rates of something like stomach cancer or pancreatic cancer are probably about the same in the US and France, but I would bet colon cancer is way worse.

Just off the top of my head, like all of those people in the Alzheimer and pneumonia bins are dying regardless of how perfect our healthcare system is because they're old people. Alzheimer in particular isn't treatable.

A chunk of the cancers are the same way because of age or lack of treatment. Survival rate of pancreatic cancer sucks even in the best health care system.

Like we could obviously substantially improve, but gun deaths are so crazy high in the US that I do think this is something we should try to address concurrently.

It'd require way more work than I would be willing to do, but you could look at like the percentage of people in the US that die from stomach cancer vs the percentage of people in whatever the country with the best survival rate is from the same disease, then add these up for all diseases.

Obviously this isn't solely because of the terrible healthcare system in the us, but delay of treatment or refusing to seek treatment is a major factor in the discrepancy between the US and other countries.

I fully expect this to be a grotesquely huge number...but the number of gun deaths in the US is also a grotesquely huge number.

Like the show needed to do a couple of different things there imo.

Either show more directly what Karli and the others were dealing with in some way. I really wouldve liked some more world building to help you side with Karli more other than the show basically going hey these flag smasher guys are ok just trust us. I want more intense scenes of what drove them there other than just some brief summaries thrown at us through simple diaolgue.

Or have Sam come out more one way or another. Treat her like he treats fake Cap? Interesting! More directly support their cause? Interesting!

Instead they do this weird middle ground where hes like lol killing people is bad dont do that again you have super powers after all. Im not even sure what he wants in that scene. For her to turn herself in? A polite understanding she wont just go around killing non-combatants any more? They have him sort of speaking out of both sides of his mouth and it is weird in contrast to the scene at the start of this latest episode.

I have a minor issue with how Sam treats Karli vs how he treats fake Cap.

He wants to talk to Karli because he wants to try and reform her (I think? That was sort of the impression I was getting) but he does this after she is involved in a terrorist bombing that killed a bunch of non combatants. He is much more rigid when dealing with fake Cap after he kills a super soldier (that was admittedly surrendering) but was at least an active combatant in a skirmish that killed someone literally moments ago.

Not that fake Cap is good, but it is weird that hes like we can talk to Karli! when that time probably passed.

I think I wouldve liked the story here a little better if she kills his friend by accident firet, sees her companion murdered by fake Cap, and then becomes more extreme as a result of that. That scene with her and Sam chatting all friendly sticks out to me a bit, particularly when he was like no fake Cap you come with us now or I will break your arm.

The catalyst wouldn't have been Mahiru's death, it would've been Mikan's. She would've realized the bullying contributed to Mikan committing a double murder and grown from that. You can't learn to be self-sufficient just because your mom figure died. You can learn to stop bullying when confronted with its consequences.

I did really like the idea of Hiyoko being forced to reckon with the consequences of her bullying Mikan for sure.

Yeah I know there weren't too many expendable characters, but it honestly felt like (to me) they kept Kazuichi around so he could fix the elevator and nothing else.
