Most recently, I picked up Omori simply because Honest Trailers did a video on it and I was curious. I had never even heard of it before. I thought it'd be a decent enough RPG, turned out it was exactly what the void in my soul needed and I will recommend it to everyone I can.

What's so awful about Wilson other than being super racist? Obviously that's terrible, but that was also kind of expected for the time and his other policies look fine. Am I missing something?

Well, he insisted the US stay out of WWI, up until the point where we had basically no choice but to get involved, and our late involvement made for a shoddy resolution to the conflict. Roosevelt wanted to get involved much sooner, but he lost the election, so so much for that.

Also, he did absolutely nothing to help the country during the 1918 pandemic. Never even spoke about it publicly. The states were left to fend for themselves. Not only that, but the government told the media to downplay the virus so that our enemies overseas wouldn't think they had the upper hand (which made even more Americans die as a result).

I never preorder anything. I always wait for sales.

The last games I preordered were Breath of the Wild and Persona 5, because in both cases the developers had track records so good I was confident they would be worth full price. And they were. But those are rare instances.

I watch far more documentaries than fiction shows these days because I feel the need to pick apart storylines in my head. I also almost never read novels; just history and social studies books.

I just worry that each progressive title will see diminished sales and they will start rushing everything to complete it in 3. Trying to do a long form story based series like this and gain in sales in the sequels is basically impossible. I know Xenosaga sold less on each iteration, I haven't seen how cold steels sales look but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same trend. I'm worried square enix isn't ready for that and will start to can the project when part 2s sales don't match up to the first

The alternative is pulling a Shenmue 3 and telling the next part of a story that will never finish.

Eh, I think Persona firmly fits the definition. The whole point of that series is to "fight your inner demons", and deals pretty strongly with social isolation, not knowing who the real "you" is, etc.

Select Final Fantasy games might fit, (I actually think VII works best, with Cloud's struggles over his identity), but more broadly I wouldn't count it.

Of the games listed in this topic, Earthbound and Persona 3 are the only ones to make me cry.

I really like Omori, though. It definitely understands how people become detached from society.

I excluded Dark Souls for being light on story, though the themes I listed are still present. I don't really consider Hollow Knight an RPG.

I haven't played Disco Elysium, so it was off my radar, but I did grab it on sale at some point.

I am defining a "Depression RPG" as "an RPG whose defining themes include depression, anxiety, stoicism, and suicide, which are often contrasted against a colorful, upbeat aesthetic."

I came up with this term when playing Omori and realized this subgenre really doesn't have a name.

Other games with similar themes while not being RPGs: Celeste, Night in the Woods, Braid, Danganronpa.

It still hurts when you've made it to the final stretch of the game and the difficulty ramps up. Then you get frustrated when you're so close to the end, and you switch it to an easier setting just so you can see the ending and be done with it.

Even worse is when documentaries are made about living killers, and it seems likely the killer is probably profiting from the doc in some way. i'm willing to sacrifice my viewing pleasure to keep royalties from rolling in to murderers

I think a lot of places have "Son of Sam" laws to stop criminals from profiting off their crimes this way. As in, the royalties have to go to charity instead.

Though it doesn't stop sickos from showering these monsters with gifts...

People lately talk that you shouldn't glorify killers by even acknowledging them at all, but I like seeing what makes a person take that dark path. I think it's an interesting psychological study into what can make man go over the edge and turn their life into an irreversible mess. And there is so much variety in a lot of cases that I don't think it's worth ignoring them.

Agreed. The Night Stalker Netflix doc was a letdown because they try to avoid "glorifying" Ramirez, but the truth is the guy had such a bizarre upbringing, and was such a strange person in general that it could have been a great way to learn about people like him. Instead they focused on the detective angle, which was less interesting.

I don't really think of TT games as Walking Simulators, simply due to the choices the player makes having an effect on the story. It's stuff like Dear Esther and Gone Home I find dull.

Though I guess The Stanley Parable is a WS, and that shit is hilarious.

I've played a few of the more popular ones, and I just found them incredibly boring. Hell, I get annoyed even in AAA titles when the shooter mechanics are taken away from me and I have to walk slowly somewhere while someone explains the plot to me. I'm very much a "games should be about the gameplay" kind of person.

Rocket League is one of my favorite games. It was an indie game when released, so...Sports.

I considered including Rocket League, PUBG, and Minecraft, but they've grown so much that it's hard to consider them indie these days. Well, that's why I left "Other" in.

Well, a third of the Noble Niners (Cloud, Seph, Snake) aren't "bland". Hell, even Sonic had much more of a personality than Mario did in the 16-bit era.

I think it's more that most game characters are bland due to the focus on gameplay over story, and people are going to focus more on the characters associated with games they love. And if story takes a backseat to gameplay, it's clear that dull characters would wind up being popular, simply because there's more of them.

don't know why you'd pick Mary Magdalene over the Virgin Mary if you're going with a Biblical woman because the Virgin Mary is definitely high on the list

My reasoning is that there's much more historical evidence of Magdalene. I figured her portrayal in the bible is at least somewhat realistic, while Jesus' real mother is shrouded in myth.
