Writing. The dialogue is mediocre and -- now that I've written a game script for this site -- you can go back and look at how bad it is. Lots of hemming and hawing, stuttering, choppy nonsense, etc. It all winds up passable, but I'd hope they'd do way better on a sequel. I can definitely see how many people hated all the characters, though. I was okay with most of 'em, but got a little annoyed by certain aspects, like Rikki constantly snooping every time you tried to do something on your own. Iron Mike was pretty great overall, however, so he might wind up being my fave character. (O'Brian was good, too, and didn't deserve most of the hate he got.)

As for Boozeman, I personally enjoyed him. He was way better pre-Lost Lake, though, because he mellowed out afterwards and got kinda bland. The part where you blow up the reservoir and drown the Rippers was badass, though -- maybe the most badass moment in the entire game. And I was glad to have Boozer there to enjoy it.
I honestly just wanted more Boozer throughout the game. Boozer kicking Deeks ass with one arm was a great moment. The one you mentioned in tags was incredible. And honestly, I loved Boozer's jokes, despite losing his arm.

If you have a good PC, grab it on PC, if you grab it at all, and make sure you have an SSD. I really would say pull the trigger and then give it a good 5 hours. This is what I did. Almost dropped it at the beginning too. The beginning is SLOWWWWW but it does pick up. I'm glad I stuck with it. They made a big deal about him looking for his wife. They really act like hes crazy and shes surely dead. When he finds her it seems like a huge under reaction. No ones too shocked or surprised and they act very normal versus so glad to see each other again. They really built up people doubting her still being alive yet really underreact compared to the build up. Its not the biggest deal but seemed weird.

I respectfully disagree with this point. Deek was certainly the only one really looking for his wife and going stir crazy over it. Boozer was just trying to keep Deek alive. In fact, Boozer was one of the few things keeping Deek alive, and it mentioned in the game. But Boozer also wanted Deek to move on. When Deek finally possessed evidence that Sarah was still alive, and then told Boozer, Boozer did nothing but support him, despite his earlier scene 10 hours prior of getting Deek to say "she is dead".
Other than Boozer, no one else really needed a reaction. Rikki maybe.

When they saw each other again, they had to be quiet and play it safe, since this new camp had a policy against fraternization. Also, Kouri had Deeks Ring. Deek was still very skeptical about why his wife gave the ring to Kouri. However the scenes that follow... the tension between them two (Deek and Sarah) just gets stronger and stronger, until finally, they are ready to go AWOL together after fucking in a cabin.

The horde stuff is what gets me going. I tihnk about 20 of my 100 hours was just out driving around looking for hordes unknowingly doing it almost for nothing since some hordes don't spawn until you complete certain story quests

However, the dialogue is pathetically amateurish
In terms of acting or writing? I personally thought the acting was on point for about the entire game, with the exception of survivors you find and save throughout the world.

Writing I can totally feel your grievances. It felt off to me in a few places, but I overall still loved it. I just wish They didn't go full happy ending in a couple areas, like Boozer. I thought that was really dumb (his sacrifice), both in execution and how he survived. But it also might've been the fact that at that part of the game they just jumped from one cutscene to the next without the player getting the option to travel from point A to point B with character dialogue in between, you know, like they did for the entire game before this section.

Budget must've been getting tight.

And I lied about being halfway through. I actually just beat it a few moments ago prior to posting this. I'm always concerned people post spoilers without marking them like this and didn't want another user who might be interested in the game to stumble upon a spoiler.

I never touched this game because of bad initial reception, and I know the launch was buggy, but I'm about halfway through (I think) the PC version and my LORD it has been fantastic. There are still bugs but nothing overwhelming like in your standard Bethesda game from 10 years ago. A floating item here and there.

I just started it after finishing Kiwami 2 (playing through the series).

Combat closely resembles Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 1, albeit less polished, and Dragon Form. Story so far is on par with the rest of the series. I'm in chapter 3 and I really dig it. Just have to get by the animation changes from 11ish years ago. I have heard though that it's probably the worst in the series. I'm playing it on Normal, where as I usually play on Hard and I plan on busting through the story...

I just love Koi Koi and Mahjong though...so I still play those

for node in nuke.allNodes():

print node['operation'].name()

What I want is the actual operation of the node, which would be "atop, over, soft-light, etc." however it just prints "Operation" over and over and over again.

I feel you. I had a herniated disc at the L4-L5 vertebra due to a weight training accident (lost my balance while squatting and tried to recover rather than let it go). After years of PT and drugs not doing anything for relief, had a discectomy (sp?) and spinal fusion.

The pain is less (still hurts with specific movements, especially if I've been sitting for a while), but it's manageable. I can feel the reduced range of motion, but I've been attempting to get back into weight training again and I can squat so long as I'm mindful of my form.

Take care of yourself though. The pain (the shooting down the leg nerve pain especially, if that comes to pass) can be rough as you've experienced, so just be mindful and eventually you'll innately figure out what triggers it and adjust accordingly. It's not a pleasant adjustment, but I'm hoping you at least can be comfortable.

Calmed down a bit now. Earlier when the doc told me, I swear he might as well have said I had cancer, even though it's not even close. All I want to do is be able to run and play Ultimate again. Right now, neither of those are an option as the pain just gets too unbearable.

Happy to know you can still work out though, even after the disc removal. That brings me a bit of hope if I ever need to get mine removed.

ScarfForLife posted...
Check out a book called "healing back pain" by John Sarno.

I was told I had 2 herniated discs in 2013 and they said I needed surgery. I decided not to do it because my wife was pregnant, I had just gotten a new job and we just bought our first house.

The book helped me. And I've known multiple people who got surgeries. From what I gather. One surgery leads to many surgeries.

Worth a shot. Goodluck.

I'll check it out. Thanks

Xray. MRI. L4 disc is fucked. It's also putting pressure on the L4 Nerve. Dr said they can do an epidural which will help with the pain over a short period but won't promote much healing. Physical therapy being the next best option, which over time will help with pain and some healing, but there will always be points (he said) where it's going to flare up.

No pain in my legs as of now, but if at some point in the future the pain does start spreading to my legs, then I'll have to have surgery and get the disc removed. Right now, not necessary.

He then mentioned the use of opiates in the longterm, but not needed right now. I really want to avoid painkillers at all cost. Coming off those fuckers via my rotator cuff recovery was a nightmare. Granted I probably wouldn't be coming off of them but I'd rather not deal with their longterm side effects regardless.

Ah, actually I made a mistake. Like CyricZ said for the dora (bonus piece) it's not the tile displayed that you need, but the tile +1. Sorry.

And to add to the Riichi explanation, you can only declare riichi if none of your tiles are exposed. Your tile gets exposed if you steal another players tile (in the game, your set will be moved to the right of the screen indicating you have an exposed tile).
Just figured that out. I was staring at the screen and I was like "I literally have Riichi, why can't I declare it" and assumed it was because I had 2 exposed sets.

dammit lol

Those ten tiles are called the "dead wall", and it's because they aren't playable in the hand. The revealed tile is the "dora indicator". It indicates which tile is "dora", which is always the tile displayed incremented by one, so in this case, the tile that's "dora" is the two of dots.

Riichi can only be declared when your hand is in "tenpai". Tenpai basically means you're one tile away from having a winning hand; out of the four sets and a pair that you need to win, you're only missing one tile.

In Yakuza games, to declare Riichi, you have to tap Square. That brings up the "declaration" options in general, and if you tap Square and can't declare anything, then there's nothing to display, but if you can, "Riichi" will appear. Select that and you'll bet 1000 points that you'll win the hand (whoever wins the hand takes those points). This locks your hand and you won't be able to make any changes other than draw and discard the tiles you draw until the one you need appears, either from a draw you get (tsumo), or in another player's last discard (ron).

If you want to watch me play some hands, check this:

The pieces in the middle are "bonus" tiles. If you win and one of your pieces match a bonus tile in the middle, you will get a bonus to your winnings.

The cardinal directions are known as "winds". There is the seat wind, which is the wind assigned to each character (yours is West) and the round wind, which is the one in the middle (East, in this case). You can make a set(3 tiles) with any of the winds, but if your set matches either your seat wind or the round wind, then you get a bonus if you win.

Finally, points are awarded based on how you win. If you win with "Tsumo" (drawing a tile from the deck) then everyone who loses splits the loss evenly. If you win by "Ron", (drawing a tile from a player's discard pile) you take your winnings from only that player's stash.

It's been a while since I played so my terminology might not be 100% accurate but hopefully this helps. I'm sure CyricZ will be around soon to correct any mistakes (he makes amazing guides for Yakuza, I'd consult them if you want to learn more)
This is great info, thank you!

@CyricZ Apologies if you dislike this tag. If you have more info to provide, shoot it. I think I now have a solid grasp of the game.

The only thing left to grasp is declaring Riichi. I understand you do it at a risk to get more points, but I've currently never had the opportunity to declare it, so I'm assuming you need a special reason to do so, a reason which Yakuza doesn't explain too well.

Yakuza Like a Dragon.

I have the basic rules down, there are just a few things I don't understand I think to really get me rolling.

What is the stuff in the middle, such as the exposed (terminal, One?) piece, along with 4 other non-revealed pieces.

What is the N S E W for each player and why does it rotate?

And finally, what determines who takes points from who? I've noticed whether it be myself winning a round or the NPCs, points are not always deducted from every player.

EDIT: I have done some googling, but google is returning just WAY too much information for the questions I'm asking, or outright the wrong info (wrong because google thinks I'm searching for something else).
