My dad dropped out of high school and learned welding in the military. He did a ton of other jobs over the years (tree work, general contractor, grading) but always did welding and pipe fitting. He got into the QC side of welding and was making 5k+ a week on some jobs. There are many white collar jobs that don't pay that much... I'm a maintenance director at a nursing home, and so I have to know a little about everything. Plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc. It's a ton of fun and I've learned a lot of skills as I've figured everything out. Plus, in another moment of bragging on my dad, he built his current house from the ground up. Dug out the basement, did all of the foundation, the framing, literally everything. Wired and plumbed everything. All of the sheet rock and interior, floors, bathrooms, etc.. Just amazing that he has so many talents and knowledge. He even did all of the required drawings to get permits. Between him, my mom, my brother and me we got the thing built.
