So apparently there is some heavy shit going down with this Chinese firm Evergrande. Big big player in the Chinese real estate market, from what Im reading.

Im seeing folks on Reddit saying it could be the first domino in a 2008-style market collapse over there (take with a grain of salt). Which of course would result in serious effects upon the rest of the globe.

I was raised in a very conservative Catholic family.

One day, it occurred to me that its really a bit absurd that someone might go to hell for eating meat on a Friday during Lent.

Eternal torture and damnation for eating the wrong kind of food on a certain day? Even if one did that with full intention and knowledge of the penalty, man what a disproportionate punishment; and yet, that is actual Church teaching.

It kind of snowballed from that one minor aspect that Catholicism was total bunk, and from that point it was an easy leap to religion in general.

one time I drove with my mom from SoCal to Houston. We got through Arizona and New Mexico in a few hours each and were through to the west tip of Texas that night. Then it took 18 more hours to get to Houston (counting the time to stop and sleep).

I'm worried the same thing is going to happen with my dad. He's 60, overweight, high blood pressure.

I've been begging him to get vaccinated, but he refuses because the vaccine is "experimental" (a favorite buzzword of anti-vax propaganda, ugh).

When I tell him his chance of dying from the disease is literally 1,000,000x greater than dying from vaccine side effects, he just tells me he'll take his chances and that he "has to die some day anyway".

It's maddening that you'd only apply that stupid fatalistic outlook to the disease that's already killed 600,000+ americans, but not to the imagined dangers of the vaccine. It's like suicidal behavior. Like fucking brainworms.
