Chess literally is sometimes an Olympic event lmao

Chess isn't an Olympic event, but the presiding organization that oversees chess is officially recognized by the IOC, so it's like the runner-up prize.

Arguably, people would be less pissy about eSports being recognized if it was treated the same way, rather than included as anything resembling an official event.

Conversely, the only other acceptible scenario is if they force everyone to play Super Mario Bros 3, and you have to use the Power Glove.

Depends on the individual movie. Some of them are making social commentary, for example, like Night of the Living Dead. Really obvious example, where the black hero survives the zombies only to be gunned down by a bunch of trigger happy white people.

The irony is, that wasn't even the original intention. His character basically dies in the end as a sort of cynical "Hah hah, fuck you" ending to show off the futility of it all.

As originally written, the character was supposed to be a dumb white guy and NONE of the subtext existed. It wasn't until they cast a black man in the role - and he rewrote his dialogue to better represent his own natural intelligence/education - that it kind of took on the additional meaning.

It's been mentioned that Romero himself didn't really intend for the film to have any social commentary or implications, but after the actor himself pointed out how his performance was going to be interpreted, Romero loved the idea.

The last time my aunt asked me to bring her mail in when she was on vacation, I didn't even go into her kitchen, so she could have had an entire sink full of dishes and a corpse stuffed into the garbage can and I'd have never known. I just dropped her mail on the coffee table in the living room right inside the front door. Not that she would have done that, because she's kind of a clean freak.

It wouldn't even occur to me to clean up someone's house, though. That just sounds like crazy talk to me.

I just tire of the cynicism especially in the face of the problems of the world when people say stuff like it could always be worse. It could also be way better too

Ohh, I agree. But again, that's not really what I was saying.

My point was more along the lines of people saying things now are worse than they've ever been before or we're going to wipe ourselves out as a species in the next couple decades are kind of asinine. Because even when you consider the things that ARE wrong, we're still better off than most of the rest of human history for nearly every single facet of human existence and behavior. And we've survived a HELL of a lot worse things than anything that's currently on our horizon. Surviving is basically what humans do, and we've got more tools in our arsenal now than most previous generations ever did.

Even as a pessimist/cynic, I'm capable of acknowledging that we're far better off than most humans throughout history, that people in The West/North America/the US/etc are far better off than most of the rest of the world, and that at least a significant part of why things can seem worse than ever before to people today is because a) we're constantly being bombarded by news, and most of it is bad, because we live in an information age and that's what draws ratings, and b) because most people completely lack historical insight.

That's not to say that things can't improve, or that we shouldn't seek to improve them, or that we should be absolutely content with what we have and we're not allowed to complain about anything because people are starving in Africa etc etc. It just means we kind of have to have a sense of perspective.

Egotism and ethnocentrism are huge problems for how we relate to the world and the other people in it, but that doesn't just apply to location but history as well. The better we understand the past and the world as a whole, the better we'd actually understand our place in it and what our reality is really like.

What he did was wrong though.

The question we have to ask, though, is whether when someone does wrong we're willing to forgive them if they seem honestly remorseful and make an attempt to atone in some way, or if we'll simply hold it against them for the rest of their lives, regardless of how long that might be, or whether or not they might change as a person over time.

And then the second question we have to ask is, in any given specific case, has the person in question honestly regretted their actions and made a sincere attempt to make amends, or have they not sufficiently atoned based on whatever arbitrary standard we've decided is "good enough" or "not good enough"?

The legal system says "if you're convicted of X crime you're punished in Y fashion for Z amount of time", after which point you've technically fulfilled your debt to society. But we as a culture tend to act on the assumption that if you do something bad even once, you're pretty much fucked until you're dead. And even moreso when you're not convicted of a crime (and thus aren't "punished"), in spite of the fact that none of us are omniscient and have absolutely no idea of whether or not the accusation was even true in the first place.

No matter how much we pay lip service to the idea of people being rehabilitated for their crimes, we almost never actually accept the idea that anyone is ever really rehabilitated, and tend to treat them like criminals for the rest of their lives. Which is kind of fucked up.

I mean, the way things have been going the last couple decades, I'd be more surprised if humanity in general was around by 2040

That's recency bias, though. Modern events can seem bad because we're living through them, but compared to most of the rest of human history, we're probably living in the most golden of golden ages our species have ever known.

Even aside from comparing things like how even some of the poorest people have a quality of life higher than the average medieval noble, just looking back at the last decade or so there are still people alive who grew up being taught to hide under their desks at school to survive an atomic explosion because we were all pretty convinced WWIII was going to start tomorrow and we were going to burn the world with thermonuclear fire.

We can look at the world and scream about wealth and social inequality, but it's still mostly better than nearly any other meaningful point in human history, especially if we're focusing on major cultures as opposed to smaller hunter-gatherer groups or other microcosm communities. We can even complain about Covid, but honestly, we're only just a few years off being in the same century of a WAAAY worse outbreak. Crime is lower, global conflict is lower... for most things, it only SEEMS worse because the 24-hour news cycle and the Internet have made it possible for EVERYTHING to feel magnified and blown far out of proportion, because we hear about things now we never would have heard about even 50 years ago. We're essentially looking at the world under a microscope and being horrified by the fact that everything looks bigger.

If anything, the only real incipient threat that could take us out for realsies is probably climate change, but that would take much longer to really kick in. And it's plausible that we could eventually adjust to cope with that as well (though as a cynic and a realist, I tend to doubt we're capable of the required long-term planning and systemic thinking that would be necessary, so we might be screwed).

For metric, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest gets the Mendoza Seal of Mediocrity - it's the bar and you have to perform under it to be "bad"

Mystic Quest isn't even that bad - it was just "Baby's First RPG" at a time when people were coming off way more advanced Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy games (or worse, WRPGs like Ultima and Wizardry) and expected more. Especially since they slapped the Final Fantasy brand name on something that was never originally a Final Fantasy game in the first place (the same way they later did on GameBoy, releasing the SaGa games as Final Fantasy Legend and a Mana game as Final Fantasy Adventure).

It doesn't help that 99% of the time, when you hear someone complain about it these days, they've never actually played it. It's just "memetically bad" in the same way that 7th Saga is "memetically hard".

Garlands_Soul posted...
The problem for me is that I've definitely played worse but they were so forgettable that I've forgotten about them

This is the problem for me, honestly. It's easy to remember games you like, but when you don't devote a ton of time to a game because it's terrible, and you move on with your life, it's much easier to forget the weird, obscure, or just-plain-bad RPGs you've played.

Sometimes I even have the problem where I'll remember having played a game, and I'll remember that I didn't like it, but not why - and I can't even entirely remember the genre. Like I'm not entirely sure whether it was an adventure game or an RPG, but I just remember thinking it was kind of shit.

KodyKeir posted...
I was going to say Legend of Dragoon, but that's PS1

I was going to say Chrono Trigger, but that's at least partly me trolling.

But it's also partly because I never really liked the game at all (it doesn't help that I hate Toriyama's art style, and that I played and enjoyed Chrono Cross first and never really went back to CT until years later). And because it always felt like there were better RPGs out there even when it was contemporary. And because the Internet has spent the last 20 years or so sucking it off far harder than it ever deserved, to the point where now I mostly just kind of hate it out of spite (see also, Ocarina of Time).

Nostalgia always complicates things, though. There are a lot of popular games that I dislike that I might have been more willing to go to bat for if I'd played them when they were new and I was a child forming fresh memories and undying loyalty for brand identity, but which kind of look and feel like shit when you're coming back to them years later when you're older and have way more experiences to compare them to. I loved the absolute shit out of the original Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest as a kid, but if I'd never played it before and played it for the first time today, I'd probably find it boring and needlessly frustrating ("Why do I need to use a separate command to walk down stairs?!").

Pretty much everyone knew this was going to happen. At least I figured it would as well as many others I talked to. Are you telling me that I have more foresight that our medical experts and other related government agencies?

Why not? I certainly did. I've been predicting pretty much every step along the way of this thing since last February. Including most of the fuck-ups.

But it's worth remembering that being able to accurately predict something or suggest something isn't the same as being able to implement something. Saying "We're going to need some sort of universal ID system to show who's been vaccinated and who hasn't, we should probably have some sort of easy-to-carry card that is about the same size as a driver's license/credit card" is easy. Actually developing the system for such a thing and coordinating with every single vaccination point to distribute it, and establishing means to check for valid cards versus fakes, is much, much harder.

Regardless of whether you want to use it as an excuse to shit on either Trump or Biden, both administrations have completely dropped the ball on providing anything resembling coherent leadership or legislation. But it's also somewhat understandable, because people have been predicting a global pandemic was pretty much inevitable for years, and suggesting we needed systems in place to deal with it, and we never bothered establishing even the most basic of plans. So now we're like the metaphorical kid trying to finish his term paper an hour before the class where it's due.

When you're in the middle of a crisis where no one is really taking charge and hundreds of people, groups, local governments, or private businesses are being forced to invent policy on the fly with no real guidance, there's going to be a LOT of counter-intuitive shit going on.
