I've been thinking lately that women get called pet names by men maybe for lack of something else that is friendly-sounding to call them. Like some men will call other men "bro" or "dude" or "man" but those don't work with women, and I never heard anyone call a woman "sis."

I hate being called pet names by women and I'm sure if I was one I'd equally hate being called those names by men.

Women get away with a lot of things that men can't. Women are also trusted more than men, especially around other people's children. When I was a kid and later a teenager, grown women did things to me that a grown man wouldn't have gotten away with if I was a girl. It wasn't anything insane that you could make a movie about, it was little things like being hugged or kissed by grown women I didn't know or being called "sweetie" or "honey," or being expected to slow dance with adult older women whom I wasn't comfortable with at social functions like weddings (if I refused my parents used to tell them I was just being shy and they'd insist until I gave in). My best friend's grandmother used to pinch my bottom if I came within reach, I'm sure if I was a girl and she was a man he would have been hauled off.

I'm not saying that girls should have to endure such things because boys do, just that boys get it too. I worked with several young ladies in a customer-facing environment and I saw them have to put up with men calling them pet names and sometimes trying to touch them or comment on their looks or body features all the time. I got it from women too but not anywhere near as often.
