It shouldn't make any difference if he ate at a fancy restaurant or taco bell. The fact that the cost of his meal bothers you so much means you're insecure to begin with.

And while it was hypocritical, it's not like it was bad advice. If he gets covid because of it then so be it, he took that risk.

People get all up in arms over nothing.

I know alot of Republicans who just make stuff up about him in conversation and rile each other up over nothing.

CE talks a lot about boot licking cominng from the right, and I don't necessarily disagree with that sentiment.

However, this post reeks of it just as bad.

Like there is no actual justice

@Solid_Sonic

Now this is interesting. I'm not here to debate if the death penalty is right or wrong, or if the intent is to bring about justice, but my question is more what you would define justice?

The reason I ask is that the way you word it is implying that the death penalty after a conviction of murder is not justice. And fair enough, i'm not here to argue that. Is confinement in the prison system justice then? Or, better put, is it a better passing of justice than the death penalty?

What would be justice for the taking of a life?

Life in the United States sucks so bad, people don't care whether they die because they can't get by, or die through other means. Our healthcare and other situations are so expective. When you don't think you can turn life around, I believe you see the death penalty as a way to get out of it easier, while also taking it out on someone you believe has caused you so much pain on top of the issues this country already has.

I can safely say with 99.99% certainty that this is very wrong. The only reason its not 100% is because I can't read everyone's minds. But if someone wants to die, they won't be looking for the death penalty to do it when there is a million other ways to suicide. And if they're wanting to do a murder-suicide, there's a million ways to do it than to murder a person, sit around to get caught, get convicted in a trial, wait around forever until the appeals are exhausted, and then sit tight until the death penalty rolls around. While I 100% do not condone suicide for anyone, I figure if a person's life sucks so bad that they just want to end it all, they would not take one of the longest routes imaginable to get it done.

And even if what you say is true, then the "person" who is inflicting the pain that the other person contemplating murder wants to kill them wouldn't be a person at all. It would be the country. I agree with you taht things are expensive in the US and need reform. But who is the murderer going to direct it to? The CEO of an insurance company? The landlord of the property he's renting? The developer of a trash video game?

TopicWhy do people in America have more empathy for guns than people's lives?
iwasapoetonce
04/02/21 10:41:22 PM
#27
There is a lot of assumptions here about Americans and why people own guns. This is coming from someone who is an American but currently lives in a country with very strict gun control laws.

First, I'm ok with nearly any law that seeks to find a solution. I'm a firm believer of that government should be what the people need it to be, and should have enough flexibility to adapt to the times. If a country I live in has strict gun control laws, then its a law I should respect. If a country (or state) values the right to bear arms, then its something I also respect.

But lets start with all these misconceptions here.

fuming posted...
americans don't have empathy for guns, they just lack empathy for other human beings. they just like guns.

False. I've lived in multiple countries and visited several more. The amount of empathy the average person living in America has is just as much as the next person living in another country. Whether that is a good or bad thing is not the point.

The current country I live in outlaws guns for every person not in military or police. And its not because the people here have more empathy than the next. The people of this country is just as content to let a homeless man starve in the streets as the next American. And that remains true to the people of other countries that I lived in.

metralo posted...
Because American's dont actually give a f*** about lives.

Just as much as the average Earth citizen. Don't pretend Americans are any more or less heartless.

Ilishe posted...
Guns are basically an illness

It's like cigarettes, drugs, alcohol. Some people abuse them terribly but even those that don't will never do anything good with them.

People do good with guns all the time. Its just that you purposely want to think that people never do.

Look, I get that guns bring more evil than good. Just like war bring more evil than good. Just as people with power are more susceptible to corruption than bringing about true justice. A world without guns and any type of weapons is an ideal world, and one we should all try to aspire toward. But understand we are living in today, and not tomorrow. A police officer still needs a gun. The military still needs firearms. And some citizens feel the need that they need a gun to protect their homes and themselves. As we try to eliminate crime and violence through proactive means, we also need to live in a world where these things exist today.

Background_Guy posted...
Guns are like a security blanket for people too scared to live their lives normally. Personally, I can walk down the street without needing a gun to comfort me, but some people just have a lot of anxiety.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Other than those who have chose the life of crime, very few (if any) people actually feel the need to carry a firearm to just traverse the city. And even if they did, it either means that crime has become out of control and they feel the need to protect themselves, or they live so far out that police protection is unreliable or unavailable. What you're esaying is basically telling a cop not to carry his security blanket of a gun to uphold the law. Or an MP who protects vital installations to not carry his gun because he is more than capable of handling any security breaches.

Anxiety is not hte issue here. Only in your world it is.

fuming posted...
if you have so much anxiety you need a gun to walk down the street without s***ting yourself, you also have way too much anxiety to have a deadly weapon on you at all times

Don't take your cues from a person who doesn't know what they're talking about. Why don't you actually ask a legal gun owner if they have anxiety going from one place to another? Instead of just asking a random guy on the internet? there's plenty of online forums about guns. Use them to understand why they own one, instead of just entering an echo chamber that is CE about guns.

TopicHow much better would America be without Republicans?
iwasapoetonce
04/02/21 10:21:27 PM
#13
It would actually be more or less the same. Arguably, the Republican party today is the result of the people voting the guys who ran on the republican platform. Trump became the Republican nominee of 2016 because republican voters rejected everyone else. The republican party as an establishment did not want Trump. When he won, they realized they could win with their base bigger and transformed their policies to align with Trump.

If we got rid of Republicans today, it wouldn't just be that the democratic party would split into two and there will be a progressive party and the run of the mill establishment dems that would run the US government. There will still be a conservative party. Either a new party would form, or the party that split from the democratic party will be the conservative party. And I don't mean conservative party relative to a progressive party. I mean just as conservative as the Republicans were.

Then you're being just as idiotic as the people who do give the cops the benefit of the doubt. We (as society) are tasked to investigate every incident, and form opinions when the evidence comes out. You're acting like guns are planted after the fact all the time, and that's the default position.

Look, I get cops have a bad rap right now. It is what it is. But if we want to have justice, then we don't start pointing the fingers until we know the facts.

And I mean real justice. Not keyboard justice. Not internet justice. Real justice.

I don't want 2-3 girlfriends, but we've been only talking for like a month and she initiates kissing, cuddling, and etc. I would honestly rather have 1 gf, but I don't want to seem needy by asking her lol.

*sighs* I kinda miss the good old days. This is not an insult to you or anyone else. But I remember in my high school days if people cuddled and kissed, it was already assumed they were dating, granted at least a few conditions. Those conditions are (but no limited to):

  1. Both people are doing so willingly
  2. No one is doing this professionally (i.e. a prostitute or an actor and actress for a scene).

If you really don't want to ask, try the more assertive route. Whenever you introduce her, say "This is my girlfriend, <insert name here>." If you have no opportunity to introduce to a friend or family members, then when taking her out to somewhere like a restuarant to eat or a movie or whatever... say something playfully about her to an employee. "I heard you guys make really good <insert dish here>. I'm trying to impress my date here. What should I order for her? She likes <insert her preference of food>."

She may already have made her decision, but say it anyways. If she says "i already decided." You can say "Yes, but I'm trying to keep in mind what we should get next time we're in the area."

If she doesn't say anything in protest like "hey... we're not dating." or "you're not my boyfriend." then at least that's a good sign. Now, there is a real possibility that she keeps quiet because she doesn't want to embarrass you publicly. Keep treading carefully, and do some smooth and affectionate moves. Hold her hand while you're walking. Get right by her and allow your side to touch hers. Don't get risky at this point. Don't go slapping her ass and grabbing at her chest, or even initiating kisses unprovoked. Attempting to hold her hand is not as risky.

But DO be assertive in your moves. Not commanding, but decisive. When you move into holding her hand, do it as if you're already dating, and then see how she reacts. If she pushes away, then withdraw and apologize immediately. There is a possibility she did that as an instant reaction because she wasn't expecting and not because she doesn't like you. So say say something like "Oh. I thought... After the kissing and snuggling... I just thought it was ok and we were something more. I'm sorry for that assumption." If she did it reflexively without thinking and actually does want you to do it, then she will respond with something positive. If not, you'll get your answer.

If you hold her hand and she responds positively by it, say to her something like "I love the warmth of your hand, <insert name here>. Its nice." Again, nothing too risky. But DO be assertive in your actions and words. Act like you're already dating. If these things fall into place, then you'll have your answer.

Alternatively, you can even just say "<name>, are you available for a nice date together this coming Saturday?" No ambiguity. Your intentions are clear, and you're not asking her "are we dating?" This is the line between "needy" (as you put it) and showing a confident affection for her. There are only a few answers to taht question. Its either a yes (great answer). An I don't know (a terrible answer). A no, because we're not dating (even worse answer). Or a no, because i'm not available that day. The last no can be rectified then and there by just saying "How about friday night, then?" or "when's the best time for you?"

You'll get an answer then.

Its weird to hear about murders and rapists as "outliers ", as if they're not human, and honestly dont make up the majority of human history.

Because they 100% are outliers, and you're being either being naive or deliberately ignoring the point. How many murderers do you know in life? How many rapists? I guarantee you that if you know some, it's going to be about 1% of the total people you've come across in life, or even less than 1%.

Now the example I'm using of "You" is anecdotal. The fact still remains, murderers are not normal. Rapists are not normal. We have that throughout our history because it has occurred in our history, but it wasn't the norm then and it isn't the norm now.

And being an outlier doesn't make them less human. We assume that people aren't born with pink eyes because it doesn't happen often, if at all. The moment we find someone with natural pink eyes, we understand that they're an outlier to what is normal. It doesn't make them less human.

If we blame uneducated voters, then we have to accept they're part of that reality too.

Meaning, while I'm all for taxing the rich more, forgive me when I say that I absolutely don't trust the government on spending the money wisely. I trust Elon Musk to spend it better. And again, I don't even like the guy. But at least he's point his resources with the intention to uplift humanity.

Not to mention the natural resources space travel would demand could be put towards a lot more practical things

I honestly want every homeless person to have dignified shelter as well as respectable meals. I want every sexual assault victim to get appropriate help and assistance. I want additional resources diverted to our schools and increase teacher pay and benefits. I also want more money into medical research as well as healthcare.

But all these things cost money. While I don't mind us spending that money, understand that we can focus on multiple things to solve multiple solutions. Not only can we do that, it is our responsibility to do that.

He has an idea and wants to put it into action. And that's his right to do it. None of us have any right to tell him he can't try to solve a problem for the betterment of humanity. He hurts no one.

Nope, because my wife went to a school with the same acronyms, and it didn't stand for Southern Methodist University. I was wondering if they went to the same school.

Look, if you don't believe in God, that's your deal. Just be reminded that the majority of people in the history of Earth have believed in some sort of God. That might be weird to you now, but it wasn't weird for the majority of humanity.

So the bottom line? They're not aliens. Stop treating them like they are, no matter how weird their beliefs are to you.

That actually bothered me from day 1. They've wished back a lot of people in DBZ, and saw a person who was even more evil than Radditz get reformed and become good. However, after his death, he barely gets any mention at all.

So lets pretend that they brought them back at their earliest convenience after Goku is wished back. Any single Z fighter was already more powerful than radditz. So if he decided not to reform, it wouldn't matter in the slightest. He would have had his butt kicked from here to the other side of the world if he tried anything funny.

It just made no sense to NOT bring him back. They're going to give Vegeta a second chance, but not Goku's own brother?

She's pretty introverted and I knew something was off about her so I just asked her if she was super religious or not, but apparently I didn't know this was normal at SMU. She had the churchy terminology/sentencing and everything and I was like wtf. What I do from here now?

What's SMU?

You are ending someone's life and that is not a humane act. The lack of pain, while good, is still missing the mark and a big part of the problem. Something being raised to be killed and often kept in s***ty conditions, fed poorly and mistreated by their handlers.

This can turn into a longer debate, but to keep it on topic, I'll concede that there are issues of how animals are raised and kept in bad conditions. Also, in general, ending someone's life is not a humane act.

That said, the reason of my post is to show that there is a distinction between ending a life painlessly and quickly versus ending it painfully and slowly. That alone doesn't justify taking a human life, but there is a difference.

We can't even fix earth and this bozo wants to talk about living on other planets

I'm not going to read every post on this topic. Hell, I don't even like Elon Musk. But we can tackle multiple problems at the same time. Not only can we, we must do so. There are poor people living in homelessness, and there is a sexual assault problem going on in our work places. It is incumbent on us to address both.

Plus, it doesn't hurt to have a backup plan.

Also, at the end of the day, does it really hurt anyone for him to try and do this? The alternative is that he does nothing with that wealth. Or invest it in other businesses that won't benefit or hurt humanity.

No, and I'll probably never donate to a politician. Its not a hard and fast rule. Maybe one day a politician will resonate with me and I'll change my mind. For now, though, they gotta work for my vote, and that's all they get if I like what they're saying.

I saw a man holding up a protest sign. I don't know what they call it. Its those signs people at WWE hold up in the crowd, and those signs people bring to protests to send a message.

It said "She's someone's daughter/mother/sister/wife." But these parts were specifically striked out " 's daughter/mother/sister/wife." So it basically said "She's someone."

Honestly, these signs don't usually stand out to me. I'll read one, comment on it, and by the next day I'll forget about it. But this one stuck with me. The take away i got from it is that it doesn't matter if she's someone's daughter or mother or whatever. From the beginning of any day to the end, she's someone, and that in itself is something we have to respect.

The point is animals are more valuable then the worst of humanity.

But that's not the measuring stick. You're choosing to measure it this way, and then framing it as if this is the topic at hand. Its not. Can we characterize humanity by serial rapists? No. We can't. Because there are far more people who don't rape than those who do.

We are talking about humanity. Not the worst of humanity. Not the best of humanity. But humanity. We aren't talking about his sister, or her father, or their daughter. We're talking about a human, and it doesn't matter which human, just as much as it doesn't matter which cow, deer, fox or house cat.
