Oh wow, I didn't know this but it explains everything. The PS Store had some absurd deals but became awful right about two years ago, surely because of this.

And most manga also have tons of characters with non-conforming genders and sexualities and have progressive messages about equality and fighting against authority (albeit maybe less ham-fisted).
