He's not necessarily a second string superhero, but RDJ basically remade Ironman to be more mainstream friendly. Now almost every iteration of Tony Stark/Ironman all act like RDJ's character. It's one of those cases where a reinterpretation of a character helped made them more popular.

Yeah, Iron Man, Cap and Strange were actually extremely popular in the 90s. I remember people went crazy when they showed up in the Spider-Man TAS crossovers. Same with the F4 and Hulk.
