My criticism of modern games is targeted primarily at AAA games, not all games, and not even all AAA games. I mentioned only four games, not every game I play, and the games I chose were specifically chosen as games that could have existed twenty years ago to make the point that there are modern games that might be seen as classics if they were older. At least indie developers put out some good shit. I can't say it's better. Skin tone is only of consequence when prejudice has a role. I can't think of a single reason why the skin shade is any more necessary to replicate than any number of other physical features that have no meaning in the game.
