I think there is a bit of a weird charm to both Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VIII where things just rapidly change and happen with barely any rhyme or reason. The story is nonsense, most characters barely matter outside of a couple of scenes but you're just along for the ride. It's like several plots from different games combined into a 'sort of coherent but not really' mess.

Games that messy, varied and ambitious just don't really exist anymore.

I can get behind this assessment. As a kid and teenager I really appreciated how wildly imaginative and borderline-random these games could be, even though adult-me recognizes that it often came at the cost of a coherent story / tone. I recently said that one of my favorite moments from FF8 was Balamb Garden taking flight - the heroes are desperate and out of options with seconds left until annihilation, Squall gets pissed, pounds on the control panel, and the whole fucking school turns into a hover-fortress. I loved it.

Along similar lines, the Dead Sea from Chrono Cross is still one of my favorite areas in gaming. It didn't make a lick of sense to me plot-wise as a teen and still doesn't to this day, but the severe lurch of tone paired with the oppressively grim aesthetic really stuck with me in a good way.

Also having a huge cast did nothing for this game. It's not like Suikoden where having a huge cast works.

It didn't seriously detract from it either, unless you're of a mind to nitpick. Filter out all of the recruitables that have zero relevance to the plot and you're still left with the primary cast of 4-7 characters and about a dozen noteworthy supporting characters that any comparable JRPG has.

While it almost trips at the finish line in this regard, FF 9 managed to keep at least a toe on the ground with its overall plot.

Normally I'd expect it to be a Tetris-esque puzzle game. But after Octopath Traveler, I'd expect it to be a Square Enix game.

I bought Cross. I also wasted money on that overpriced DS port of Trigger with the god-awful retranslation and mind-numbing extra content. Still cracks me up that Squeenix was apparently hinging the future of the series on the latter selling well.

I now realize that I accidentally implied that there was anything redeemable about the prequels, and I apologize for my post.

I'm pretty hyped for this, definitely not something I was expecting.

Now I get to spend the better part of the year wondering which tracks will get added. Really hope we get DK Mountain and Daisy Cruiser from Double Dash (I hated that the former got wasted on Mario Kart Wii). I was pretty miffed that DD's representation in MK8 was two of its worst tracks, though the later addition of Baby Park and Yoshi's Circuit was very appreciated.

I have a feeling that your personal definition of 'important to the plot' might be vague enough to handwave any answer given, but plenty of the recruitable cast of characters help drive the plot forward through secondary roles in it. Fargo, Radius, Viper, Norris, Leena, Karsh, Riddel, Starky, Korcha, Irenes, and Steena all come to mind.

Gotta be honest, I just don't have the balls to invest in LGMA.

I'm starting to think that the sketch where he became filthy rich because he knocked up Oprah and started shitting on everyone beneath him wasn't entirely satire.

One thing that bears mentioning TC is that you can tame and ride wild deer that you come across in the woods, which is pretty damn fun. On my second playthrough I didn't even bother with horses and just snagged a passing deer anytime I wanted to cover ground faster.

I often have to remind myself to be thankful that my dad is the most sane of my grandfather's sons.

And my maternal grandmother is basically John Hammond from Jurassic Park without his vast fortune and with one foot even further out of reality.

Fur realz. Everyone shits on the divine beasts, but I liked them more than traditional dungeons. Their intros were way more dramatic and cool than any other 3d Zelda dungeon and manipulating the whole dungeon and its orientation using the slate was cool as hell. They're shorter and smaller, but I liked that about them too. Traditional dungeons can kinda drag on, and I get tired of wandering the hundred rooms trying to remember where a certain puzzle or door was and how to get to it.

Yeah, it's a shame we don't get a fun new tool in each one, but whatever, at least we aren't locked out of puzzles in the open world because we haven't visited a certain beast yet.

People also complain that the beasts all had the same aesthetic, but I think it worked for botw. The story gave a reason for it and there are enough varied environments in the game outside of the dungeons, so it's not like we're missing out on themed environments. I wouldn't want them to do a game full of the same dungeon aesthetic again or make a habit out of it though.

BotW made me look back and realize that, from OoT onward (and with very few exceptions), I almost never looked forward to doing the dungeons. A rare few had a good combination of design, aesthetics, and clever puzzles to be enjoyable, but the vast majority of them were just overlong, overworked slogs that killed the sense of fun I had exploring the world.

How much I enjoy the more bite-sized approach to Shrines over traditional dungeons cannot be understated. They worked with and enhanced the sense of world exploration rather than stymieing it, and dealing with a single, focused puzzle concept at a time (be it brief or more elaborate) was infinitely more enjoyable. It was also nice walking into a puzzle Shrine and not immediately knowing what abilities would be used to solve it, making the solution feel more organic and rewarding (whereas in a traditional 3D Zelda dungeon, the solution was more often than not the item you'd just found, which would oftentimes be rendered largely useless after the dungeon was over).

I certainly remember when Stern asking a woman to get her tits out indirectly resulted in the needless deaths of thousands of people.

I have rarely come across this problem in London. That kind of ignorance doesn't really appear there. We do have direct racist people here though. And that isn't the same thing as this.

I have personally in my life witnessed a brown kid get permanently nicknamed 'Apu' by a bunch of white kids. There, my anecdotal evidence negates your anecdotal evidence.

In typical CE fashion, the topic continues to keep piling on post after post of arguments even after the 2nd post quite effectively explained the problem.
