This is a classic tactic of reactionary backlash: Guide the debate away from the core issue (do trans people deserve equal treatment and protection under the law?) into irrelevant cul-de-sacs about civility, strategy and linguistic complaints.

This happens ALL THE TIME and I'm getting so sick of it. I wish there was a consistent way to nudge a derailment back to the core issue, but I haven't been able to find a consistent way yet. Once people enter these cul-de-sacs they seem to really get stuck there.

I feel like this is wrong. If someone is ordering A, then they're ordering A. It's more common to ask for substitutions for specific ingredients in a dish, not for a substitution of the entire dish. And even then, it's not very common (in my anecdotal experience) for people to ask for substitutions. Maybe they'll ask for no croutons on a salad, or to leave the salad dressing on the side. Something like that. Even this doesn't occur too often.

The whole damn point of the show is to show how random luck and factors outside of your control (like strength and age) are often all that separates who survives in life and who doesn't. That people with good intentions (Ali) often get screwed over and people who are weak (old people) get taken advantage of.
That message is hammered into the audience. And if you don't get that, you seriously shouldn't be commenting on the themes of the story.

Kinda but not really. Player 1 didn't get executed because the game was secretly rigged in his favor because he designed the system. That wasn't luck, and it wasn't outside his control. He built it that way. The message is that whoever has the most money makes the rules, and "fairness" is an illusion that the rich use to manipulate the poor. (Although I thought it was an unnecessary plot twist to make the old man the mastermind. Would've preferred if he was a real player who got killed.)

It was a disappointment for me when I found out Gwyneth Paltrow's vagina candles are basically just regular candles scented with rose, bergamot, etc. The claim that they "smell like a vagina" is because the aroma is supposedly "sensual," but you could buy similar candles anywhere. I wanted them to actually smell like a vagina.

Goldfinger is like the James Bond title song for me. I also like Live and Let Die, Skyfall, and The World is Not Enough, but this feels like a case of an iconic song establishing itself early and making it tough for other songs to dethrone it.

Never really liked You Know My Name tbh. Doesn't sound James Bondy enough, and I don't like the chunky animated visuals. Wish they'd focused more on the playing card motif.

Pretty shitty to make jokes about vulnerable people for being vulnerable, which is what a lot of the jokes boil down to. And the "team TERF" thing is particularly gross. Kinda like being "team KKK" or "team brownshirt" or some other hate group. Obviously comedy about these groups isn't off-limits, when the groups are being mocked like in The Producers or Django Unchained or something, but when the groups are being defended? Ignorant at best and malicious at worst. I'd say Chappelle is more on the ignorant side, but it's still not great.

Whenever meat vs. plant diets come up in conversation, meat-eaters tend to be much more obnoxious in my experience. Most vegans I know just mind their own business, and will still eat at restaurants with meat-eaters and order plant-based stuff on the menu, etc. But I've known plenty of meat-eaters who will refuse to eat at vegetarian restaurants, will rub it in everyone's face how much they love steak, and are usually pretty condescending. I've also seen it wrapped up in hyper-nationalism in the US too. Like you can't be a "real American" if you're a vegan. It ends up coming off as insecure.

Eh I don't know. I kinda think I wish it was more different from the cartoon. The fact that you can literally compare the openings side by side, because they're the "same," makes this feel worse because the cartoon version is just better. As though this is an imitation, and not an adaptation.

I don't know about the SyFy movie, never saw it, but the Fremen aren't portrayed as gullible in the first book. They're more advanced than the colonists when it comes to the spice (which is the most high-tech thing in the universe), combat, survival, and especially understanding the worms. There's a whole subplot about how they're bribing officials to ignore their more advanced settlements so that they can operate under the Emperor's radar.

And while Paul might not do the most damage until later books, the whole first novel is about him gaining awareness that he is choosing a genocidal warpath purely for the sake of revenge. Obviously the books are dealing with messiah archetypes and colonialism, but these things aren't presented as positive. Pretty much the opposite.

There actually is a lot of problematic stuff in Dune, but it's more about gender roles, sexuality, and eugenics.

Of course I haven't seen the new movie, so it might be totally different.

I mean, I wouldn't exactly call it a "white savoir" trope since... the "savoir" ends up committing galactic genocide and is literally compared to Hitler in the story itself.

But this movie only covers the first half of the first book, so I can see how it might come off like that. And the series has definitely got some weird identity politics, to say the least.

I've been summoned three times, and served on one jury for a criminal case maybe five years ago. I'd always kinda thought it was important, but after actually being on a jury, I now think it's very important.

Some of the other jurors didn't give a shit what was happening, and the verdict could've easily been swayed by some very poor reasoning during deliberations. And it almost was. But I was personally able to get some jurors to pay better attention to the evidence, and that ended up mattering a lot. It's one of the few times in my life where I felt like I had a legitimate role to play in the US political process.

There's a lot of ways you could interpret it. The whole episode is about that Puss and Boots concept of "just tell enough lies until everyone believes you and your lies become the truth." So at the end, it's like she's finally being honest by wearing eyeglasses in public. Not lying anymore. Except it's for a play, and those particular eyeglasses are fake, just part of a costume. So it's the truth but it's also still a lie.

It's the sort of show that honestly probably requires multiple viewings. Even though it seems crazy and nonsensical at first, everything actually makes sense if you know the details of what's happening. But it's hard to pick up all the details the first time through. The episodes are so densely packed with info.

On a first watch, just go with the flow and let it wash over you.
