It's so bad at my uni that people take chemistry at other colleges just to pass. Most of the professors who teach chemistry at my school are awful at their job. When I was a chemistry tutor, I did their job for them for the students assigned to me.

Through google I see more articles from legitimate sources (i.e. not crypto fan sites) about the potential of the blockchain technology than I could ever read. Why should I believe you that it has zero benefits?

Yes, you've told me that crypto requires a perpetually growing energy source, but nothing posted here or that I've ever heard about crypto agrees with that. Why didn't the journal article about crypto energy consumption concerns mention that it it will always require exponentially more energy to maintain?

First of all I did not see the link to the full graph and it was too small to read, so I didn't read it until now. So thank you. Coal and natural gas are used to generate electricity so you can't just ignore them while they are the nation's biggest energy sources. That's all I really have to say to that.

I mean seriously, you guys have begun to insult me because I don't agree with the intention of this topic and that crypto is a pointless scam. Why should I engage with you when you have already made up your mind about crypto? And before you accuse me of doing the same, I haven't. I see the potential use of blockchain technology in future applications, like this one, and I hope they succeed.

Bitcoin is not as bad as you are claiming.

I assumed the bitcoin mining would happen as close to the energy source as possible.

This would lead to more efficient usage of energy for that purpose.

The article implies that energy concerns with crypto mining are all about greenhouse gas emissions.

(Ok, here's a legit conclusion) For the longest time, the narrative from internet forums was about how amazing crypto is and how it's going to revolutionize the world ad whatnot. And this message reached it's strongest point when crypto made big gains in early and late 2021. But recently there has been a group whose goal seems to be the exact opposite: That crypto is evil and is going to destroy the world thanks to its energy consumption. Claims by those whose only goal is to praise or trash the technology should be taken with a grain of salt. As for the size of those grains, you should just cut salt out of your diet.

The article says that mining crypto is a concern if the energy used is not renewable. The article's conclusion is based on any greenhouse gas emissions crypto causes. There is nothing there about exponential or perpetual growth, which seems like a pretty big deal when questioning crypto's energy efficiency.

I also saw an article that said Bitcoin's energy consumption (as of 2018) was about the same as Ireland's per year. That is obviously a lot, but think about all the things that go into running the world's modern banking system. It requires a shitton of energy of all types, which necessarily includes unrenewable energy. I just can't see how crypto could realistically cost more.

Crypto bros are ones posting their own conspiracy theories about how the government is trying to ban crypto or whatever.

Think about how much energy it takes just to print/mint and distribute currency around the world. I would bet that an all-digital system will easily consume less energy than that.

I agree that using them as investment tools goes against their fundamental use, but no one knows if that bubble will ever pop. More importantly though, crypto could theoretically replace the modern banking system which would be a net gain for the environment,

If you aren't going to admit that the intention of this topic was to get people to dislike crypto more than they already do, then I don't know what to tell you. I'm pretty sure I've seen you make anti-crypto topics before, and like I said they are very common now on reddit.

I answered it. You made an anti-crypto topic with no contextual information other than the link to the article. You just wanted to criticize or laugh at the headline.

That's all you posted. It would be really helpful to know why they would do this (the article even says in the first-paragraph "they discussed an idea that, on its face, seemed almost upside down"). This topic is just fodder for people who hate crypto.

I browse reddit and see the constant articles in r/technology or another subreddit that talk about how terrible crypto is for society. You made this topic with no contextual information, just reacting to the headline.

If energy is unused, it obviously goes wasted. Crypto creation basically requires heavy computer use or a lot of electricity. I don't see an issue if the excess energy goes to making crypto, which could also offset the cost of running the grid itself.

But again, I'm not a big expert on this. But anti-crypto people have done nothing but spread misinformation and fearmonger. They are worse than reddit crypto/stock market bros, which is saying something.

I heard they want to mine crypto to offset energy that goes unused/wasted. I haven't read into it but I'm not about to believe the fearmongerers who are just anti-crypto.
