  30. Shadow of the Colossus
  31. Left 4 Dead 2
  32. Burnout 3: Takedown
  33. Wario Land 2 (While the original Wario Land was fun, it still felt like a standard Mario game, starring a different character. Wario Land 2 was a fully-realized game in its own right. The whole game gives you an immeasurable number of options to take the story. You can play all sorts of different levels, face different bosses (depending on your choices within the individual levels), and you don't even need to worry about dying. That's one of the most unique takes this game has to offer: you can't be killed. You take damage, sure, but that just serves as an inconvenience and loses you money (Wario's one goal is to get rich, and/or die trying). It just makes the gameplay feel a lot more fluid in the best way.)

  44. Final Fantasy IX
  45. Diddy Kong Racing
  46. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (I haven't played this in a long time, so I can't judge it the way I was once able to. I enjoyed the game when I played it though. I thought the concept and the ending twist were fun, and it had the necessary linearity that prevented me from enjoying 2D Zelda games (mainly the original, since that's the first Zelda I ever played). It just gets overshadowed by the 3D games, unfortunately for it.)
  47. Tetris
  48. Age of Empires

  74. Gunbound
  75. Team Fortress 2
  76. Final Fantasy XI (Looking back in retrospect, I spent so much time and money and energy, playing FFXI, and it really wasn't a fun game to play. It does not help that I've tried FFXIV in recent years, and it's just far superior. FFXI's biggest problem is that the gameplay is absolutely shit for an MMO. The first ten levels, sure, you can solo those. But after that, you're forced to form parties with other people...but all parties needed to be formed manually. And the thing about MMOs is that tanks and healers are at a premium, and DPS are a dime of a dozen, so if you're a DPS, you're not gonna get invited to things, especially if you one of the lesser DPS classes (which I was). Basically, you spend hours trying to put together a party which struggles to take down a single enemy of an appropriate level range, which only rewards 250 exp AT BEST, at a point when you might need to fight 50+ enemies at that 250 exp maximum (which means monsters 3-4 levels higher than you); And heaven forbid you lose a fight, because the game takes massive chunks of EXP away for a single death. It was an extremely un-fun mechanic that actually stopped me from continuing to play the game. I mean...it just was poorly made all around, thinking back on it.)

Yup, Ice Age 3 was yet ANOTHER animated sequel (Not unlike Despicable Me 3 and Secret Life of Pets 2, both of which are already out) where the producers thought "We have all these characters from previous movies and kids might be fans of any one of them...but rather than maintain focus on a single main character, we're gonna scattershot the plot across EVERYONE, and add NEW characters into the mix, because we know kids don't care about any sort of coherent narrative". I hate the mindset of "EVERYONE needs to have a major focal point and story arc", because, to paraphrase one of the better Disney/Pixar villains, when everyone is the main character, then NO ONE is the main character.

Despicable Me 3 should have been exclusively Gru dealing with the aftermath of getting unnecessarily fired and trying to get his job back by proving his skills of villainy against Trey Parker. None of the stuff with the girls, none of the stuff with the wife. You can introduce Dru and have him complicate things, and that's fine. But the focus should have been exclusively on Gru. And I get that the movie feels very Gru-centric already, but what I mean is...there shouldn't be extra scenes where Margot is dancing with some local boy and then is mistakenly engaged to him. There shouldn't be extra scenes where Agnes and third girl go hunting unicorns and find a goat. These scenes in particular make the move feel bloated, while not contributing to the central story. It's fine if those plots are told through Gru's lens, because he should be the main character, but they're extremely superfluous when the cast is just having scenes and screentime dedicated to their misadventures without him around.

Same thing with Secret Life of Pets 2. Max should absolutely be the main character, because he's the one who has a character arc over the course of the movie. Gidget and Snowball should have been cutaway gags at best (and Gidget largely was). But Max's anxiety should have been the SOLE focus of the movie. Give him more of a relationship with the kid to amp up that anxiety. Keep Rooster being tough on him as a neurotic city dog, sure, because that helps Max grow. But also, play up the relationship with the kid because Rooster doesn't have that on the farm. His life is not a one-to-one translation with Max's, so you can have scenes of him looking forlorn that he doesn't have what Max has, and he can be a bit more empathetic when the climax of the film comes around. Keep the tiger plot, sure. You can have Snowball and Gidget (who could easily have replaced Tiffany Haddish) trying to rescue the tiger, but then the train takes them to the podunk town where Max's farm is. And one thing leads to another, they free the tiger and go to the farm, but it gets recaptured, and in the process, the kid gets captured. Suddenly, Max needs to put his bravery into action to rescue his child and all the plot threads tie together nicely with Max as a hero.

Ice Age 3, first off, you've gotta get rid of the Diego subplot. It is completely pointless. And Sid's subplot is just dumb altogether. The plot should exclusively be about Manny fretting over being a father again, worrying about Ellie, and then the dinosaurs show up to wreak havoc, and Manny has to rescue Sid (and maybe Ellie's brothers) because he needs to be a protector for his burgeoning family. Similarly to the changes with Max up above, build Manny up as overly worried about safety, and then over the course of the movie, he has to go out of his comfort zone to rescue his adopted family, proving that he's strong and brave enough to handle anything life throws at him with his new child.

All three movies, you just need to center the film solidly around a main character. You can still have goofy little subplots, but you NEED a main character to emotionally ground the story.

Also while we aren't too far off from it dropping...Universal here launched a Secret Life of Pets dark ride that I never got to ride due to the pandemic. Apparently it was very well received but I had a pass pre pandemic and then let it expire before returning. Unfortunately Universal Studios Hollywood kind of blows and I can't really justify another ticket or pass until they open Nintendo Land.

The eternal rivalry of Universal Studios and Disneyland on full display, folks.

Yes, there are fewer dungeons (and the dungeons don't stand out as memorably as some dungeons from OoT), but the game makes up for it with the time shenanigans that allow you to rewind and try a multitude of side quests, working to fix little problems throughout the world with each new cycle. Add in the highlighting of masks, both for transformations and side effects, and it's all really great. Also, I love the Twinmold fight. and did a school project about that boss...so, there's dedication.)

God...dammit.

I was working on leveling my team to 55 (I go in five-level chunks), and I'd gotten through most of my low-tier Pokemon and was only my upper echelon. And I'm down to my last three: Violeta, Rafael, and Shay. Everyone else is 55 and I've swapped some of the lower-tier guys into the rotation. Now, because I have a trio with Water and Ground attacks, I've swapped back to fighting Gravelers and Houndooms. But I don't want to send Violeta out first, because I'm terrified of Stone Edge. So I'm using Rafael. And he's doing fine. He's got Giga Drain to heal up on Gravelers (I know his attack stat is better, but against Gravelers, a high power special attack is still 4x effective), and is basically chugging along great.

So I wind up fighting a Houndoom, and this WHOLE time, I've been operating under the assumption that Rafael's Ground-typing would cancel out his Grass-typing to make Fire attacks neutral. I was wrong about this. We're at the level where Houndoom naturally learns Flamethrower, and Rafael is slow as fuck, so he moves second, gets blasted by a critical hit Flamethrower, and survives with 5 HP. And then the burn hits. I then had to watch and PRAY that Earthquake would OHKO this Houndoom, but the burn condition was JUST enough to lower my attack so I didn't get the kill. And despite Rafael being my starter and having all those "Rafael looks at you expectantly" friendship actions, he did not power out of the burn. Nope, the burn dropped him to zero, and I lost my started Pokemon.

The sad thing is that I was literally thinking to myself, how in my previous attempts at Nuzlockes, my starter is lucky to make it to level 20. I have a history of my starter getting blasted by a crit, or me thinking they're just a lot stronger than they really are. But now, after almost fifty levels, he doesn't get to make it to the endgame. He doesn't get to square off against Cynthia. The massive wipeout of six Pokemon from my last update is NOTHING compared to losing Rafael. RIP Rafael (Level 5-53).

I'll say one thing though. Between my Pearl Nuzlocke and my normal Diamond run, I specifically went into these remakes, wanting to use Torterra, since I'd never done so before. And if I'm being honest, it didn't impress me all that much. I mean, sure, it gets Earthquake really early. But until that point, you get no Ground-type attacks by level. And despite having a stronger physical attack stat than special, it does not learn a physical Grass-type attack after level 13, with Razor Leaf. How the hell does this NOT naturally learn Seed Bomb? Because it's not like you can just pop a physical Grass TM on it. Despite my current sadness over losing a long-term survivor...I'm not coming out of this playthrough thinking any more positively about Torterra. It still stands out as being FAR inferior to its starter counterparts.

If you're someone who likes cute animals and cute dogs, then Secret Life of Pets/2 does a good job of creating cute animal characters who behave in a manner the is relatively similar to the behaviors of real animals that one might find cute. As such, it makes sense that someone might find the films appealing if they are an animal lover. I disagree personally, but at least this ranking makes sense for Ermine's sensibilities.

Unlike another top ten entry for him >_>

Well, the game has markedly become more difficult. I got to Victory Road and caught a level 45 Graveler (named Creed) to replace Sylvester, but he didn't last long. I wound up fighting an Ace Trainer with a Clefable, and my only Pokemon with either Steel or Poison attacks was Dani. Metal Claw did not OHKO, but a critical hit Moonblast did. And when I sent Creed in to Earthquake the thing to death, another critical hit Moonblast took him out as well. RIP Dani (Level 35 to 52). RIP Creed (Level 45 to 46).

Things continued going wrong (though I'm not REALLY complaining, since I'm mostly using my D-team and I had 30 Pokemon upon entering Victory Road) as I fought a Veteran, and I had nothing particularly strong against Hippowdon. I figured I'd send in Irwin in hopes he could OHKO with Bubblebeam, but not so much. Irwin survived the Crunch attack with 4 HP, but Hippowdown's ability kicks up a Sandstorm, and that's all it took to kill Irwin. RIP Irwin (Level 31 to 52).

And then I fought a tag-team of Ace Trainers, who both apparently know how to play Pokemon. I'm so used to NPC trainers sucking that they caught me off-guard. Staraptor Close Combatted Erin, and Whiscash finished her off with an Earthquake, while Sumara could only flap helplessly. The Whiscash tried to finish her off with Zen Headbutts, but she outlasted and survived the battle. RIP Erin (Level 3 to 50).

I finally got out of Victory Road with my four casualties, and decided to surf the waters of the Pokemon League for my final catch of a standard Nuzlocke run. A level 39 Tentacruel (named Tyana) joined the party, and at this point, I know I need more training. Cynthia is notoriously hard, even for non-Nuzlocke players, and I'm averaging 12 levels lower than her strongest Pokemon, across the board. So I went back underground, only to discover that the level boost for beating Volkner is unforgiving.

The Gravelers, in addition to knowing Explosion and Earthquake, now have Stone Edge as well, giving them three of the strongest moves for their respective typings, and Sturdy, so I can't hope to reliably OHKO them. Woody fell victim to this first, as an Earthquake crit killed him, and then Samantha died to a Stone Edge. My batteries are dying, so this is the end of my update for today. RIP Woody (Level 16-51). RIP Samantha (Level 8-51).

Anyway, thank God. That's genuinely one of the most unpleasant movies I've ever watched, and it genuinely baffled me to see it survive over poorly-made, but ultimately generic kids movies. Not that I'm gonna outright praise anything out thus far, either. My list basically goes:

40: Worst Ever
39-36: Boring
35-31: Aggressively Stupid
30-27: Still Boring, But Better than Aggrssively Stupid
26-22: Mindless and Harmless
21-12: Slightly Interesting
11-3: Decent
2-1: Genuinely Good

I feel like every time we do one of these lists, one thing holds true: I have a much higher tolerance for dumb, inane shit than most other people who participate in these rankings. >_> There's still absolutely zero excuse for my number 40 not being dead last among everyone, and so help me if this is on your heads Red and Karo.

  15. Paper Mario
  16. Kingdom Hearts
  17. Super Smash Brothers: Melee
  18. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
  19. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
  20. Tony Hawk's Underground (The Tony Hawk games were always fine sports games that felt different from the majority of boring sports games out there. But I LOVED THUG. I loved the fact that they took the Tony Hawk franchise, and managed to weave a cohesive narrative about a rising star in the skateboarding world. Eric Sparrow is a piece of shit character, but that's why I love him as a villain. The game is just goofy in the way that Tony Hawk games always are in their irreverence, but it's that story thread that really sells how good it is.)
  21. Pokemon Black/White/Black 2/White 2
  22. Silent Hill 4: The Room
  23. Bioshock
  24. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
  25. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  26. Final Fantasy XIV
  27. Batman: Arkham City
  28. Halo
  29. Shadow of the Colossus
  30. Left 4 Dead 2
  31. Burnout 3: Takedown (I'm not someone who generally plays legitimate racing games, but holy shit did Burnout bring something new to the table. If you're going to hbave a racing game, make it so car crashes give you that slow-mo footage that makes a race worth watching. On top of that though, it added a whole mode where your ultimate goal was to floor it into a crowded intersection and cause as much damage as humanly possible. That was amazingly fun for me, and I have a ton of fond memories of playing this game.)
  32. Banjo Tooie
  33. Detroit: Become Human
  34. Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate
  35. God of War (2005)
  36. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  37. Donkey Kong 64
  38. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
  39. Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
  40. Resident Evil (I'm referring to REmake specifically, but it's enjoyable all the same. This is how a Capcom survival horror game should work (at least prior to the shift in gameplay with RE4). The mansion exploration was great, because it added a weird puzzle element beyond just "look out for zombies", and the game itself was campy enough to capture that horror movie feel without being too goofy as to completely drain itself of any ability to be taken seriously. Plus, Wesker's a badass, and I just really enjoyed what the game had to offer.)
  41. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
  42. Final Fantasy IX
  43. Diddy Kong Racing
  44. Tetris
  45. Age of Empires (I'm really not the best at RTS games. I just can't focus enough and multitask to properly keep track of a whole bunch of military units and whatnot. But Age of Empires was still fun for me, when it let me take things slow and go at my own pace. The story mode for Egypt was the only civilization I actually completed, largely because there was no war involved, so I could just nation build. That's the thing...if you give me a scenario where I can just gather resources and build EVERY building and research EVERY research, then we're all good. That's my jam.)
  46. The Sims
  47. Kirby's Dream Land
  48. Jackbox
  49. Super Paper Mario
  50. The Bouncer
  51. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
  52. Super Mario 64
  53. Banjo Kazooie
  54. Super Mario Brothers
  55. Phoenix Wright: Justice for All
  56. World of Warcraft
  57. Dino Crisis (Looking back on it, while I enjoy the Survival Horror genre, and I'm a fan of dinosaurs, Dino Crisis kinda pales in comparison to Silent Hill, or its Capcom contemporary in Resident Evil. It's an extremely basic example of survival horror gameplay, and that can still work to an extent, but it's just not all that memorable. Dinosaurs aren't necessarily as interesting of horror enemies as zombies or demons are I guess. Plus, I found the gameplay to be MUCH improved in the sequel.)
  58. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
  59. Enchanted Arms
  60. Star Fox Adventures
  61. Half-Life
  62. Final Fantasy X
  63. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies

Dammit, had a whole post typed up and closed the tab by accident.

I was leveling my team up to 50 in anticipation of Volkner. Even though he's an Electric gym-leader, due to Sinnoh's shitty Pokemon selection, he has a diverse team that can't be stopped by just choosing Ground-types. And I thought I'd finished, but as I was putting together my team of Grass- and Ground-types, I realized that Sylvester was still down at 46. So I threw a Lucky Egg on him and went underground to beat on some Houndooms and Gravelers.

Three levels later, I was at around 35% health, but I needed maybe two more battles to level to 50. I figured a Golem could take out two Ponyta to get the necessary EXP. One battle went by fine. The second, the Ponyta used Low Kick. For those who don't know, Low Kick is a Fighting-type attack (stronger against Rock) that does more damage to heavier foes (Golem is thicc AF). And with that, I lost my long-running Geodude. RIP Sylvester (Level 5 to 49).

With Sylvester's leveling a flop, I picked out my team and went after Volkner. His gym was annoying, because again, there are only three fully-evolved Electric-types in Sinnoh, so a bunch of trainers had Psychics or Steelix or whatever. I beat him all the same though. Sure, I wasn't exactly prepared for the number of Ice Fangs that would've been 4x effective against Rafael or Shay. But I had Stephen with me, and cursed body disabled Ice Fang long enough for Shay to Bulldoze Luxray into oblivion for the win. With that, I now have all eight gym badges, and next up is Victory Road and the Elite 4!

  27. Halo
  28. Shadow of the Colossus (Despite being a one-off (I know it's tenuously tied to Ico, but whatever) game, it's really incredible how memorable SotC is lo these many years later. Yeah, there's not a TON of content outside of the individual boss battles, but holy SHIT those boss battles are crazy memorable. It's like taking a 3D Zelda game and removing the dungeons so everything is JUST boss battles. And that's awesome. I remember the flying desert colossus was my favorite for sure.)

  36. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
  37. Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land (Well this rose via nostalgia. Yeah, I never really played the SMB or SMW series, because I mostly got my Mario start on the Gameboy. And I love the Wario Land games. Wario's a much more fun character to play as than Mario, because he's just an uncaring dick. And by not having a recurring villain like Bowser, you get a lot more variety to boss battles and whatnot. Honestly, this feels like the Mario universe's foray into what Rare would become better known for in its platformer titles.)
  38. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
  39. Final Fantasy IX
  40. Diddy Kong Racing
  41. Tetris
  42. The Sims
  43. Kirby's Dream Land (Another instance of the Gameboy kicking off my video game experience. There's definitely nostalgia involved in this ranking, since Kirby's Dream Land was one of the earliest games I ever got, but for a short platformer, I got my money's worth from this one. Whispy Woods is a memorable boss, and while it was a game I could actually beat, it wasn't so easy that there was zero challenge to playing it. For my first (and really only) Kirby game, this one sold me on the character and the gameplay.)
  44. Jackbox

  50. Super Mario Brothers
  51. Phoenix Wright: Justice for All
  52. World of Warcraft
  53. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
  54. Enchanted Arms (This is the cheesiest goddamn RPG imaginable. It's like if someone from Japan tried to make the most cliched RPG imaginable, and it WORKS because of just HOW over-the-top it is. The battle system was fun (though now that I've played Persona 5, P5 does it much MUCH better) enough, and it happened to work out as a bit of a unique genre on the JRPG-starved XBox, so it stands out in my mind for that reason.)
  55. Star Fox Adventures
  56. Half-Life
  57. Final Fantasy X
  58. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies

  61. Final Fantasy IV
  62. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
  63. Half-Life: Opposing Force
  64. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
  65. Gunbound (Never played Worms, so this was the best I could do. It was a fun little game for a multiplayer experience. It's a simple execution: pick your little armored vehicle and either blow up your opponents, or destroy the ground underneath them to make them fall off the stage. You've gotta use physics, take wind into account, and overall, it's enjoyable. The only problem it really had was the lack of proper single player, and it could take a LONG time to finish if the elements worked against you.)

Every time my number 40 (which I thought for absolute sure would be dead last with everyone, and apparently has at least one top half placement) is spared at the expense of a bad, but otherwise innocuous movie, I die a little inside. I could understand 38/39 for these two, but Jesus CHRIST how is my number 40 not down in the 230-240 range for this list?

  8. Portal
  9. Persona 5: Royal
  10. Chrono Trigger (This is such a genuinely interesting concept for an RPG that it's impossible to dislike it. It manages to get a lot of things right: random battles can at least be avoided, the playable cast is big enough to feel diverse, yet small enough to not feel like characters are getting ignored or overlooked, and it tells a unique concept for a story by utilizing time travel throughout the history of the world in question. This is just a really solid game overall, and it might just be the best thing Square has ever made.)
  11. Final Fantasy VII
  12. New Pokemon Snap
  13. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
  14. Left 4 Dead (I like this better than the sequel. The setting was better for sure, and fighting your way through a city just feels more interesting than a weird amalgamation of gimmicky settings. I makes the threat of overwhelming zombies feel that much more believable. Plus, the characters are interesting in their own regard, and the five special zombie classes feel like they're all the game really needed. I just really enjoyed my time playing this game overall.)

The fact that I was able to beat it (without using the end-of level warps) certainly adds to my enjoyment. Plus, it's what kickstarted the franchise far more than Donkey Kong ever did.)

  26. Left 4 Dead 2 (I genuinely had fun playing this, because not only is the single player perfectly acceptable, but this came out at a time when I was regularly enjoying multiplayer experiences with friends. It's hard to dislike a game where you're playing survivors of a zombie apocalypse and trying to escape. I will say that I don't think this improves on the original though. The characters (Ellis aside) aren't as memorable, the new infected additions do nothing for me, and too many of the levels feel gimmicky in a bad way. That being said, I love the bridge level. It's extremely fun to have a sequence where you can just book it and run your ass off in a straight line, no pauses or situations where you need to turn on a generator or fill something up with gas.)

  53. L.A. Noire (This is one I never beat, but I know I got over halfway through the game, so I feel like I can rank it. I didn't really enjoy this too much. I think the problem is that it's a sandbox game, but unlike a GTA, it doesn't feel like you have the freedom to really do as much, since you're never really roaming around without being on a mission. Also, I enjoyed the story up to the point I got. You just keep building and building, and it's interesting, trying to question people and arrest people...but then it feels like I reached the climax, only to have it backfire, and suddenly the game takes a step backwards, which felt really unsatisfying. I think that's what killed my desire to play any further, so here we go.)

Dual Destinies isn't lame, but it certainly doesn't stand out in any meaningful way. It added some new systems involving Athena and her emotion checker, but that wasn't especially helpful. It's similar to the other games in the series, but those games live or die on how memorable they are overall. This just isn't all that memorable.)

Picking this up again soon. I've been spending the past week catching everything that unlocked in the underground in Diamond, but I just finished doing that, so I'll be picking Pearl up again. Need to unlock the national dex to get some version exclusives, after all.

  25. Halo (I actually really like the original Halo. I have to admit that a lot of my gaming tastes are gonna reflect positively on the PS1/N64 & PS2/Gamecube/XBox era. During that era, XBox was the big console for me to play FPS, and Halo is a really solid first-person shooter. I love the pistol for being as OP as it is, and it just isn't the same after they took what made the pistol great and gave it to the assault rifle in future games. But yeah, this was fun, and it spawned Red vs. Blue back in the day, which is another major positive.)
  26. Banjo Tooie (While Banjo Kazooie is fine, it's a bit too plain, if that makes sense. Banjo Kazooie and DK64 both feel like they were test runs, and Banjo Tooie feels like the culmination of Rare's efforts. This is the most fun game of those three, and the gameplay is still great, but it really amps up the chaos and weirdness that make the games feel interesting and unique.)

  15. Super Smash Brothers: Melee (This one lacks some of the single player quality of Ultimate, but it also came out at a time when in-person multiplayer was far more of a thing for me, and as such, I have a lot more memories of just enjoying playing with friends. The game was easy to pick-up, and it had just enough diversity of the roster to be exciting. There's a reason, beyond its fanbase being weirdly elitist assholes, why Melee has endured as a beloved rendition of the franchise.)

The platforming doesn't do a whole lot for me, and honestly, I was never good enough at older platformers to really consider them worthy of praise on my end.)

I know fans are generally dismissive of games beyond the first three, but I appreciated Silent Hill 4 because Walter Sullivan is a great villain and character, and the whole concept of being trapped in your apartment and only able to go into these Silent Hill nightmare worlds, where you're set upon by monsters and the ghosts of a serial killer's victims...it's fascinating. The combat was a step up, in my opinion, and I just found myself really intrigued by the game more and more as it went along.)

In reality, it's a decent, standard Final Fantasy game with my favorite lead character in the franchise, and there's nothing especially BAD about the game; I've never felt like it's too slow or anything like that. I do agree that the cast is lopsided in terms of character development, but what are you gonna do?)

Yes, the franchise has gotten a bit crazy, but the first game was just "Here's some Square-Enix magic working in tandem with Disney properties." The story is straight-forward and fun, the combat is great. Really great. I loved getting to the endgame and my Aero spells could just shield me from a fuckton of damage, with that satisfying sound of hitting bosses over and over again. I love love the original Kingdom Hearts for that reason. It worked really well as a solo game.)

This got rid of all that and instead just gave Mario a bunch of paper powers, or his little butterfly buddy transformed. It still had a lot of the same quality gameplay at the earlier games, but it lost a lot of that same spark.)

It's got all the same fun gameplay and the concept behind a Mario who lives in a 2D realm of paper is enjoyable in and of itself. Plus, because it's an RPG, the story gets to be a little more in-depth, since the gameplay isn't necessary paramount. The gameplay is still solid though, and it makes for a fun RPG overall.)

I may not remember if I played MK64, but THIS will definitely stick in my memory.)

  31. The Sims
  32. Jackbox (This is an enjoyable game, but it's entirely dependent on having the right group of friends around and available. yeah i meant to clarify - there are a couple points during the game where Kimahri can either be useful (like the above) or strong enough to be worth using - but once the game really opens up, Kimahri and Lulu both become pretty useless. Power leveling Kimahri in the endgame is a fool's grind which i've done many times over

I was gonna say this too. Kimahri, sure, he's useless. But the second Yuna gains access to Lulu's spells, Lulu is absolutely useless. Yuna has stronger stats across the board, and even the most basic spells hit harder when she's the one casting them.

B2W2 are a bit more than the typical extra game but okay.

Pokemon Ranger

Honestly, they'd rank lower if I kept them separate. They removed the threat of Team Plasma by a lot, and I wasn't the biggest fan of the movie mini-game.

  15. Pokemon Black/White/Black 2/White 2 (As with my write-ups for Platinum and Emerald, I can't properly rate the extra game in any Pokemon generation. Thus, I'm going to focus more on Black/White. I did play BW2 though, and I distinctly remember if being, I think my first effort at a Nuzlocke, which I wound up dropping because I happened to be playing it as I went to the midnight release of XY. Anyway, I love BW for its story first and foremost; I'd say its the best story in the franchise (in a way I wouldn't say about BW2, honestly). Team Plasma is evil, but I appreciate them being evil in a realistic fashion, rather than some warped idealism you might see out of a James Bond movie. On top of that, while there was a lot of duplication, I loved BW's effort to create a COMPLETELY new Pokedex. It might not reach the highs of some other generations, but it gives a unique feel since the game has so many chances to make something new instead of a clone. Honestly, it's gotta be up there as one of my favorite Pokemon generations for that reason, because it just does so many things right.)

Much like I said with Platinum though, by the time the third game comes out each generation, I usually just don't have the energy to play it as thoroughly as the first two. RSE is a decent generation, and it manages to add a large number of new Pokemon, while still keeping some of the older stuff around. The end result is a more coherent Pokedex than we got in GSC. Granted, the story or Aqua/Magma is really dumb, and the endgame DRAGS with how much water there is, but it's still a game I put a LOT of hours into. And this was before easy Wifi trading too, so for me to complete my Pokedex in Gen III actually took some effort.)

  18. Batman: Arkham City (Arkham Asylum was a bit too insular, so having a game with that gameplay, but with a much larger sandbox to play in, was a marked improvement. It helped to really emphasize the number of enemies Batman had to fight, since you could have different regions of the city controlled by different gangs. It just felt like a stronger narrative because there was more wiggle room in what the writers had to work with, and I think the game very much benefitted from that.)

  2. Portal 2
  3. Silent Hill 2
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  5. Resident Evil 4
  6. Mass Effect 2 (In retrospect, ME2 was very much the "let's introduce a bunch of characters and let you have a bunch of fun, wacky adventures with them" game in its trilogy. There's plot progression, but it feels like you could almost time skip from ME1 to ME3, and not lose too much in translation. That being said, ME2 vastly improves the gameplay from the first game, and it's just fun across the board. The little character quests you get to go on are great for developing these personalities, and it makes ME2 a nice like jaunt between the heavy atmospheres of the other two game. Plus, without the characters being built up, their ultimate outcomes in ME3 wouldn't work as well, now would they?)
  7. Portal
  8. Persona 5: Royal
  9. Final Fantasy VII
  10. New Pokemon Snap
  11. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
  12. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations (It's interesting, doing this ranking and realizing that the Danganronpa and the original PW trilogy follow a similar pattern in terms of game quality. PW3 is definitely the best game of the first three Ace Attorneys though. You have a solid overarching storyline involving Dahlia Hawthorne (who is an amazing villain), and you get some closure with regards to Phoenix and Maya, whose relationship was cut tragically short. Three of the five cases build on each other in solid storylines, one of the remaining two is a unique twist in terms of the crime committed, and the last is your standard case three...which is another similarity with Danganronpa. How about that?)
  13. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
  14. Bioshock
  15. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (This was a real solid adventure game with muder mystery and police investigation and all that good stuff. I think it's an extremely consistent game in the series as well, since a lot of them have one or two or three REALLY bad cases. PW1 is solid throughout though. I do wish 1-5 was shorter, or just didn't exist, since 1-4 is such a perfect finale. But whatever, it's still good.)
  16. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  17. Final Fantasy XIV
  18. Detroit: Become Human
  19. Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate
  20. God of War (2005) (I know I beat this one, but I can't remember if I beat GoW2 or 3. But in terms of character action games, I enjoyed God of War. Kratos was an interesting, albeit edgelord-y style of character, and I like the concept of a mortal asshole raging out and taking down one of the gods in revenge for some wrongdoings. I'm that describes a lot of games, but I've not played a lot of character action, so here we are.)
  21. Batman: Arkham Asylum
  22. Donkey Kong 64
  23. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
  24. Tetris
  25. The Bouncer
  26. Pokemon: Platinum
  27. Super Mario 64
  28. Banjo Kazooie
  29. Phoenix Wright: Justice for All (Case 2-4 is amazing, and it's one of the best in the franchise. Cases 2-1, 2-2, and 2-3 are all kinda lame though, and make the game a bit of a slog to get through and reach that conclusion. The first and third games both have that strong throughline, and PW2 lacks that, which perhaps explains why there's less build-up to the finale, and why that case feels like such an outlier overall. Again, it's a good game, but it's outshone by the rest of the trilogy.)
  30. World of Warcraft
  31. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999 is in a similar genre to the Danganronpa series, but it doesn't quite hit any of the same notes that make me love Danganronpa. Honestly, it's been a while since I played it, and it was a fine puzzle/adventure game, but it just doesn't resonate or really linger in my mind, you know? It's fine. It's in the "fine" section of this ranking.)
  32. Star Fox Adventures
  33. Half-Life
  34. Final Fantasy X
  35. Final Fantasy IV (FFIV is a fine game, but in terms of the Final Fantasy series, it's just largely there. It's not terrible. There are some major flaws in other games that inspire active dislike; with FF4, it's just very standard fantasy. The characters aren't especially deep or interesting, the gameplay isn't anything special, and it just kinda gets weird and peters out at the end. Again, it's not TERRIBLE, but it just doesn't stand out much overall.)
