I've seen Castle in the Sky that he produced and apparently he did musical werk on Kiki's Delivery Service. I've meant to watch Anne of Green Gables [Akage no An] and Dog of Flanders. Ghibli films: Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Grave of the Fireflies, and Only Yesterday are all must-watch. Pom Poko isn't quite as good as those three, but it's a lot better than it's reputation and definitely worth watching if you're into Takahata. You should probably skip My Neighbors the Yamadas unless you're a completionist. Pre-Ghibli work: Anne of Green Gables is the best of Takahata's TV series and just an amazing show in general. As for his pre-Ghibli films, they tend to be interesting because they feel like prototypes for various kinds of movies Ghibli would eventually make. Horus Prince of the Sun (Miyazaki-esque action/adventure), Panda Go Panda (Miyazaki-esque light-hearted slice-of-life) are both fun watches in that regard. --- Congrats to 2020 GotD Guru champ azuarc! |
