NATO is basically a bunch of weak countries agreeing to let the US sit troops in their borders in exchange for the US defending them. Most of Europe's armies are pretty weak.

And even if they weren't, the only countries with the capability of facing Russia, defensively at least, are France and Germany. The rest are too small to field an army. Maybe the UK, but that's a big if and depends on a large conscription drive.

I seem to recall hearing we stopped trying to assassinate him because we feared he'd be replaced by someone more competent.
I mean, his own generals were trying to kill him too, so there is that. And if you look at all the plots to kill Hitler, the amount of luck this bastard had to not die until he chose to kill himself rather than face an army of very angry Russians is insane. There was a bomb plot that failed to blow his plane up because it was too cold, another plot using the same bombs failed because the guy couldn't get close enough to Hitler (the suicide bomber also got very lucky surviving), another attempt that was part of the Valkaryie plot was called off because they couldn't get Himmler at the same time (they didn't want to risk a civil war with the SS). Yet ANOTHER plot was stopped by a German Officer not out of loyalty but just because he thought it was wrong to kill a man while he was eating. And then there was the bomb that actually DID detonate, but because of the placement of the bomb against a heavy table leg and the open windows, Hitler and just about everyone else in the room survived. Hitler created a special gold wound badge to commemorate living through the attempt, for himself and everyone else in the room.

I also recall reading, and take this with a grain of salt, the Allied powers considered slipping Hitler female growth hormone to try and neuter the power of his voice.

Too much of the Nazi Leadership were like Hitler, ordinary infantrymen in the Kaiser's army, who had little grasp of the full scope of the war.
Yeah, the closest I think he had in his inner circle to someone who was a real officer was Herman Goring, and Goring only led JG I towards the end of WWI after The Red Baron died. Or did he only have Jasta 11? Doesn't matter in the long run. Running a Squadron is a lot different than running a whole air force. That had an armored land division for some stupid fucking reason.

The other problem with invading Russia is that prior to fighting them, he'd faced small countries. Russia is not small, to state the obvious. And once they moved most of their factories east of the URals, well, that was it. They have a huge population, and now you can't even stop them from making weapons of war. Then you declare war on America and you have the same problem, plus a giant ocean. And you don't have any four engine bombers. Why? Because some other officers convinced Goring they were useless, a fact Goring bemoaned late in the war. If they could reach the factories it may have made a difference. But then again probably not.

Basically not just Hitler but a large bulk of the German military brass were glorified yes men who were too scared to tell him the truth
https://youtu.be/sbim2kGwhpc
There's also the suspicious manner in which Albert Speer's predecessor, Fritz Todt, died in a plane crash in what is now Poland. Todt was a big opponent of even invading Russia in the first place and there are theories he may have been trying to negotiate an end to the war on the Eastern Front on his own. Speer himself was also supposed to be on that flight but was stopped by Hitler personally.

Now, if Hitler's top brass were competent and he stayed out of planning the war, and they didn't invade Russia... They MIGHT have got a sizable hold on on Europe had they avoided drawing the Soviets and America in, if only because eventually the British were going to run out of money to fight the war. But I doubt it long term. The German Army and the SS spent as much time fighting partisans behind their lines as they did fighting the enemy. So "Greater Germany" was destined, most likely, to collapse into a mess not unlike how Africa looks now.

Hitler: Can you make it do dive bombing too?

For a few centuries British Diplomacy was "stick penis in every part of the planet Spain and France didn't put theirs in first, occasionally fight over the borders of these parts, threaten anyone in the parts we got to with the Royal Navy." Then WWII happened. Now British diplomacy amounts to "do what we want or... Uh... WE'LL TELL AMERICA ON YOU!"

Meanwhile, as an American, I never assume my government would negotiate or inform me of things in good faith, I have no reason to suspect we treat Russia, China , or even our own allies any better.

You have that right whether you pay for it or not. You are not obligated to watch ads on a public tv channel. Or in a free magazine. Or in a brochure that was put in your mailbox.

Besides, there are more differences between internet ads and the rest. To name a few, advertising in print or on TV never:
- install malware
- run crypto miners
- follow you around online
- construct a profile on you and sell it to others
- increase bandwith, driving up loading times and (potentially) costs

Not to mention the lack of editorial oversight that makes it more likely the ads are misleading, fraudulent or inappropriate. All things considered, I honestly believe ignoring tv/print ads is more unethical than blocking internet ads.

Internet advertisement in the late '90s - early '00s was pretty damn awful with popups everywhere. It wasn't until popup blocking software became popular (and later integrated in most browsers) that this problem was solved.
Well, my major usage of the internet really didn't start until the mid to late 00s. And either way, I think all we've done is highlight that comparing ads on a service that requires our active participation (the internet) versus ads in a product or a service that is passively participated in (like TV) is something of an apples and oranges comparison.

Guide posted...
Does that void it being piracy though? It's okay to admit that sometimes piracy is good.
I don't care one way or the other about piracy. That said, the advertisers pay the content provider to use the time or space. My refusal to acknowledge the time or space they paid for isn't really piracy.

When you watch cable tv, make sure to schedule your bathroom breaks during the movie so you don't miss a second of the commercial breaks. And you better not skip over any ads in the newspaper either!
That's an idiotic take. The fact cable TV has ads is absurd in and of it self WHEN IT ALREADY COSTS SO DAMN MUCH! My mother told me a story of when they first got cable, a relative was over watching a movie, and was rather dismayed there weren't commercials to use to take a leak. Because they were paying to see it on cable. The point being, once upon a time cable didn't have ads.

And I pay for the newspaper, hypothetically anyway, so it's my right as the purchaser of the product to decide which parts of it I read over.

That said, internet ads have become obnoxiously intrusive compared to what they were ten years ago or so. When I was a teenager, ads were usually a banner offering you a product or service to get your attention. Then they morphed into browser slowing monstrosities that had to flash, and play obnoxious videos and automatically expand over the page you're trying to read. Hell, once upon a time the worst ad I could ever see on a non-porn site was for Evony. And only because if someone walked in you had to explain the half naked chick on the side of the screen.
