Their lives were made up of hard work and simple family life; they made up the majority of the people in the middle ages and if free, paid their lord for the use of any land. Others directly worked for the lord on the land in exchange for living there. Because there was so much of it, peasants were allowed to farm the surrounding land to make enough money and food to live. Often these areas were made into smaller manorial courts or halimotes. There were strict bylaws that governed such village and there were consequences for breaking those laws. The lord held great power over the peasants, called serfs, they were treated much like slaves, they were not allowed to marry without permission and could be taxed, charged for services, forced to work in mills, or other areas at the king's or steward's command.
