Ariana Grande accused of 'Asianfishing' in new photos, praised by Oli London for looking 'cute and oriental'



Ariana Grande was accused of Asianfishing after photos of her surfaced on the internet in which she appeared to have different facial features.

The photos were posted by New York-based photographer Katia Temkin on Instagram and were widely circulated on Twitter. In them, Grande poses in a green oversized blazer with a white ascot tied in a bow around her neck, an outfit she wore on The Voice.

Critics noted that in the photos, her eyes appeared to have a different shape than in previous pictures, speculating that she underwent plastic surgery. Grandes supporters suggested that the controversy was overblown. Others suggested that implying her smaller shaped eyes looked more Asian was a racist assumption in itself.

Asianfishing explained

Asianfishing refers to the act of a non-Asian individual attempting to look Asian by adopting Asian phenotypic features, makeup, clothing and other aspects of physical appearance.

The term is derived from Blackfishing, a term coined by Canadian journalist Wanna Thompson, in which a non-Black person tries to appear Black, often resulting in the non-Black persons financial gain. Both terms originate from the idea of catfishing, or posing as someone you are not on dating apps or social media.

Oli London becomes involved

The controversy was amplified when influencer Oli London, a white British person who underwent extensive plastic surgery to look like Jimin of the K Pop group BTS, weighed in (London is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns). London identifies as a transracial Korean person.

London praised Arianas appearance, stating she looks so cute and oriental and welcoming her to the transracial club.

Some on Twitter took Londons endorsement as further evidence that Grande was altering her appearance intentionally.

Grande has been involved in previous controversies

The singer was accused of cultural appropriation of Asian cultures after tattooing what she believed was Japanese for 7 Rings, the title of a popular single from her album thank u, next on her hand. The tattoo actually said sichirin which is the name for a small Japanese grill. When she attempted to resolve the misspelling, she ultimately made it worse.

A broader 7 Rings controversy also encompassed accusations of Blackfishing and culturally appropriating Black culture based on the music video for the hit single.

After this latest controversy, users on Twitter joked that she has become master of the four races.

Theres just going to be more and more variants that bypass the vaccine. Yeah well have a new vaccine but by the time thats finished one or more new variants will take shape. Teachers have always had to expect a certain amount of stick from their pupils. Its part of the job; normally we dont grumble too much about it. Over my 14 years in the profession Ive worked across nine secondary schools, teaching history in Wales, Blackpool, and Liverpool.

Sometimes, I encountered challenging behavioural problems. Ive been told to fuck off; called an idiot and a t***. Teenagers can be aggressive, but as a teacher you cant take any of it to heart. We have to depersonalise the abuse, leaving it at the school gates at the end of the day. Normally, Im fairly good at doing that. Its an issue I discuss regularly on Teachers Talk Radio, an online radio station I help to direct.

But a week ago, that changed. I was labelled a paedophile by an anonymous TikTok user, presumably a pupil at my school. For the first time in my career I felt truly shocked and afraid.

And it appears Im not the only one. This week, the NASUWT teachers' union warned that teachers are quitting their jobs because of the latest TikTok craze, in which pupils falsely label their teachers as paedophiles or adulterers. The new phenomenon sees children posting images or videos of teachers with hashtags (a feature that lets users search for the different topics on TikTok) such as #paedo.

The tech company said it regretted the slurs and that it was proactively searching for such malicious allegations.

My own ordeal started when a senior member of staff at my school (a comprehensive in the North West) called me into a meeting, and told me that an abusive video about me had been posted online.

I went home, slightly confused, and opened my laptop. It took me about 30 seconds to find what my colleague had been talking about. On TikTok, I found a mysterious account with an anonymous username. They had posted three videos, one of which was critical of my school. The other two videos focused solely on me. The anonymous user had taken photographs from my professional Twitter account, and overlaid them with text.

One piece of text called me a nonce. Another said I touched children, asking: How many children do you touch? Thousands, millions?. With a sickening feeling, I spotted that the post had been viewed by 12,000 people. I scrolled through the comments, a sea of likes and cry-laugh emojis, some of which were posted by pupils from my school, with usernames I recognised. One of the commenters said I touched [their] shoulder. It was all very jokey and light-hearted; to them, it seemed like a big laugh. To me, it was far more serious.

Nobody wants to be labelled a paedophile. But as a teacher, it can prove career-ending. I started to worry about my future. How was I going to face my pupils on Monday morning, aware that many of them were laughing at me, and spreading terrible rumours behind my back? It might sound far-fetched, but I even started to worry about being victimised by a vigilante group.

I assume the videos were posted by a pupil, but its hard to know for sure. I racked my brain for a motive what would make a teenager target me like this? But I truly have no idea. Im a relatively strict teacher, and there are any number of things that might have turned a child against me.

I immediately reported the videos to TikTok, but they didnt act for several days, once my story had already been highlighted in the press. My school, meanwhile, reported the account to Merseyside Police, who told me the videos do not meet the threshold for further investigation. You can falsely call someone a paedophile online, it seems, with zero repercussions.

Friends and fellow teachers shared my horror. Im 36 when I started in the profession, nobody had to worry about online abuse. Bad behaviour and name-calling stayed in the classroom. Now, it can be broadcast to thousands of people within seconds.

A doctor signed me off work for stress; I havent been into school since. My contract with my current school finishes at the end of this term. I never imagined my time there would end this way but I just cant handle the fear of pupils laughing at me behind my back. In January, I start afresh, with a new job at a new school.

Hopefully, things will improve.
Policymakers worry, as they are right to, about the effect of social media on the minds of our young people. Isnt it time somebody worried about the effect its having on teachers, too?

Woman claims strawberry Pop-Tarts don't have enough strawberries, sues for $5 million



In the case of blueberry Pop-Tarts, Kellogg notes on the package that the product is naturally and artificially flavored.

Kellogg is being hit with a multimillion-dollar lawsuit alleging its "Whole Grain Frosted Strawberry" Pop-Tarts are deceiving consumers, failing to warn them that strawberries are not its only fruit filling ingredient.

Strawberries are the Products characterizing ingredient, since their amount has a material bearing on price and consumer acceptance, and consumers expect they are present in an amount greater than other fruits, the suit asserted. The Products common or usual name of 'Whole Grain Frosted Strawberry Toaster Pastries,' is false, deceptive, and misleading, because it contains mostly non-strawberry fruit ingredients, namely, cheaper pears and apples, the suit said, a violation of state and federal consumer protection statutes.

The plaintiff, Elizabeth Russett of New York, claimed she would have not bought the strawberry Pop-Tarts or would have only been willing to pay less than what she did had she known the truth.

A similar suit was filed in August in Illinois. Spencer Sheehan, an attorney based on New York's Long Island, is representing both women.

A reasonable consumer knows that this is a toaster pastry a quarter-inch thick. We know were dealing with filling going into a pastry, Sheehan said. Of that fruit filling, they should be able to expect that its mainly strawberry.

Kelloggs Whole Grain Frosted Blueberry Pop-Tarts are also made with other fruits besides its namesake ingredient, in this case apples and grapes. Thats acceptable because those front labels are marked Naturally and Artificially Flavored, Sheehan said. He said Kellogg could add a similar disclaimer to its strawberry Pop-Tarts, such as marking it as mixed fruit on the label or by including the percentage of each fruit.

Consumers deserve to know that when they see something labeled as strawberry, it mainly contains strawberry, Sheehan said. Words have to have some meaning.

Food-maker Kellogg told NBC News it does not comment on pending litigation.

Under Food and Drug Administration regulations, products must not be labeled in a false or misleading way. But some legal experts who represent food and beverage companies in advertising and regulatory litigation dont think the strawberry Pop-Tarts are mislabeled.

The claims asserted in these cases strike me as so weak that the courts confronting them may dismiss them as implausible, said Adam Fox, a partner at Squire Patton Boggs.

The notion that any plaintiff was moved to buy the products because of their belief that the products contained more strawberries than they actually do is likely to run into the reality that many, many consumers like the products because of the trusted brand with which they are associated or even just the taste or texture of the product, he said.

Ivan Wasserman, a managing partner at Amin Talati Wasserman, who represents consumer products, agreed.

In a class action you would have to show a common belief of how much fruit it has, he said. Thats going to be a difficult row to hoe.

Courts have tossed out mislabeling cases where they found it was clear no reasonable consumer would be confused.

In 2009, Quaker Oats was sued for Crunch Berries not containing any berries.

This Court is not aware of, nor has Plaintiff alleged the existence of, any actual fruit referred to as a 'crunchberry, the judge wrote in his dismissal. So far as this Court has been made aware, there is no such fruit growing in the wild or occurring naturally in any part of the world.

For some attorneys, the cases represent a niche market.

Many are settled, Wasserman said, for values ranging from a nuisance value to a large amount, depending on the volume of sales and nature of violations. For a company, its very expensive to litigate cases. Plaintiffs attorneys understand that, he said.

The mechanism of class-action lawsuits can serve as a small market corrective.

In 2012, Nutella agreed to stop running ads claiming its chocolate spread was healthy, settling a class-action lawsuit brought by a California mother for $3 million.

Several food-makers who claimed their products were 100 percent natural when they contain high fructose corn syrup changed their package claims following class-action lawsuits in the 2010s. The legal questions prompted the FDA to clarify that any product made with HFCS where the corn syrup comes in contact with synthetic enzymes cannot be labeled as natural.

Sheehan said those examples are the minority. He said he isnt out to topple any Goliaths and said what he does cant compare to the power of laws and enforcement.

While he has filed over 100 lawsuits against companies he alleges falsely advertise their products as "vanilla," he said he just delights in identifying everyday consumer injustices and going after them. Unlike many of his peers, he said he proudly files lawsuits instead of just issuing demand letters, because of the structure they provide.

I enjoy it. I always hated the small thing you could never get a redress for. Maybe you don't get a refund at a store. Maybe you get cellphone charges crammed on your bill. All those little things that we experience every day and accept without a thought. Oh what's the big deal, it's just a quarter? Sheehan said. It adds up over time.
