The issue was whenever the questline had you vertibird over the city from the police station it was trying to render in the whole fucking world and it would crash your game. It took them a year to fix. I was able to finish it but I had to restart the game multiple times because the only ending that worked was the institute ending. Some people got past it by only looking at the floor of the plane. I played on PS4 on launch. For one, they relate all religion to a very specific, usually American, strain of evangelical protestantism. Or radical Islam, if they want to add some racism to their general douchebaggery. Two, they weren't nearly as learned as they pretended they were.
