Outriders did this and drove me nuts because their trash servers would drop you even playing solo. Very likely they're going to reverse course on the solo mode not unlocking anything, though. I agree with you that it's a step back from L4D. I played L4D2 for thousands of hours (majority of that time in Versus) and was so excited for B4B, played the beta and that excitement was gone.
