Glad to see you enjoyed it for the most part. I never really liked how much this game gets trashed on, considering how strong it is for its time.

The lack of cynicism you brought up is something I never really thought about too much. I always thought there was a sort of cozy atmosphere to most of the game, just chalked it up to the aesthetic and the music. But it does have a sort of brightness underlying the whole thing.

The final cave is famously wack. I've heard a probably-apocryphal tale that they were cutting it close to the deadline and didn't have time to playtest Mt Itoi for balance issues. But tbh I was comfortably strong enough to win the final fight even after fleeing from the majority of the battles there, so I guess it worked out in the end.

The twist with Magicant and the ending with Giygas kinda hit me hard the first time. The Earthbound series in general is pretty efficient with delivering emotional moments. I won't spoil anything, but hope you look forward to that emotional element growing and improving in the sequels.

But on topic, I always wonder if skits like these ever reach the audience that needs to hear it most. I remember a news story about older (I think middle or high school) kids starting banned book clubs, which gives me some hope. There's always been hysterical "think of the children!" attempts at banning media, but it's become more insidious in recent years.

Or maybe it was always this insidious and I was just too young at the time to understand why people wanted them banned lol

I got really nervous reading the topic title, but the response is about as reasonable as you can expect from a politician. Gives me some optimism that something will be done.

I think the most fucked up version of this happened in the CW superhero shows. At one point, the entire multiverse is wiped out by an entity called the Anti-Monitor. They're able to create a new multiverse, but it's an actual-facts brand new one. So all of their friends and family are dead, just replaced with copies. And then to make matters worse, they give the new copies the memories of the old ones, essentially killing the new copies too.

1. Deep Space Nine has an episode where the crew meet a settlement of 8000 people who are their descendants. The main conflict being that the crew is fated to fall into a temporal anomaly that sends them back in time, where they become stranded on a planet, set up a new colony, and eventually create the city that exists in modern time. They initially decide to follow the course of fate to prevent erasing 8000 people from existence, but shenanigans ensue, they avoid their fate, and the colony disappears. Episode ends with the captain giving a quote that the topic title paraphrased.
2. At the end of Life is Strange, you have a choice of keeping your best friend alive, but letting a hurricane fuck up your coastal hometown, and going back in time, letting your friend die in the past, and averting the crisis. Before letting you make this decision, the characters have some existential discussion, and something along the lines of "the time we spent together still happened in your memories, even if they never actually happened" is used to soften the blow of potentially killing your friend. However, in their time with you, your friend was also able to repair their damaged relationship with their family. If you go ahead with killing them in the past, their family just lives on thinking their daughter hated them and died pointlessly over some drug deal.
3. JoJo is slightly better about this because of the particular mechanics involved. It's not really "time travel", more of a repeated cycle of time, with the potential of removing people from each new iteration of the cycle. So even though only one character remembers the events of the story, with the rest of the cast essentially transforming into new characters with new lives and memories, it could still be believed that the ones the readers saw still existed in the distant past. The "memories" angle is less bitter here, but still, ugh. >_>

Tbh the most bullshit attempt at a "bittersweet" ending in any time travel plot.

It's just a downer ending. There is no sliver of optimism or catharsis in the fact that people who used to exist are now as real as chupacabra. Except you could argue chupacabra is still less fictional because the idea of a chupacabra has impacted real people.

Stop pretending this isn't just straight up depressing and worse than death by every conceivable metric. They were living beings. Now they're just your imaginary friends. >_>

I mean I like it, but functionally it's just equippable spells. The stat buffs/penalties never even feel significant. You can load Cloud with magic materia and still cleave through trash mobs. >_>

I prefer the job systems in the games that use them. Tend to offer comparable customization to materia, but their stat distribution makes party-building more interesting imo. Everyone in 7 just feels like Red Mages, but without any of the drawbacks that balance their versatility.

Dumbledore's hot steamy makeout seshes with Grindelwald are literally the turning point for the character in his youth, explaining the kind of character he used to be and why he made the choices he did in the series proper.

The ability to link all gens should never be gone. They need to replace Bank with another option. This sucks.

I mean, let's be honest with ourselves. It isn't realistic to expect an evergreen solution that ensures universal compatibility across every generation of Pokemon.

The fact that GameFreak, of all companies, have manged to frankenstein an infrastructure together that lets you use your Blastoise from a 2004 playthrough of LeafGreen in a game from 2020 is remarkable in its own right.

But this rabid insistence on always having access to cartoon monsters you caught thirty years ago is unsustainable. Eventually even Home is going to run into issues with future gens that's going to require another "middleman" app.

I would be more upset by this if post-GC Nintendo systems weren't trivially easy to hack. Not that I would ever condone such actions, but from the perspective of game preservation, it's a lot easier to access "lost" Nintendo media than other systems.

As a piece of hardware, it was an inoffensive novelty.

Judged by its software, it was pretty good. But it's got Sega Dreamcast syndrome where almost every game worth playing on it was eventually ported to superior platforms. >_>
