That's a lecturer. A professor has to worry about material for their course(s), students in their course(s), advise their grad students doing all kinds of different projects, deal with undergrad interns, seek funding on a consistent basis so they're writing a lot of proposals, write their own research papers, help organize and/or attend conferences to keep up with their research area and remain active in the community, (if the school/department gives a shit about the surrounding community) help organize outreach events, spend a nontrivial amount of time reading and giving feedback on dissertations if they are on their student's committee or are asked to be on another student's committee, navigate through department politics all in the quest to earn tenure, and I'm sure I'm leaving things out for certain areas since my experience is only in the computer science and engineering departments.

I wanted to be a professor when I started grad school and that tune quickly changed when I saw all the shit that my advisor had to deal with and how long she stayed in the office daily. So I went the research lab route instead.

Gonna revisit the previously asked question about how hard is it to shut the hell up when you don't know what you're talking about. I don't run my mouth over politics because I largely don't give a shit and not giving that much of a shit leaves me uninformed for a lot of complex political things. But it's never been a struggle to keep da trap shut and read.

I've probably annoyed my coworkers by how much I document shit and ask them for details when they figure something out on a project, but it comes in handy. Most recent example was last week when a few people were pinged for some question and guess who had the answer on the very last line of our readme
