The Spanish Flu was named as such because the Spanish news wasn't sugar coating their statistics so they were reported as higher than everywhere else, even though they were about average.

It's not so much "sugar-coating it", more that pretty much everyone else was in the middle of a massive war at the time. So reporting accurate illness and casualty numbers would potentially weaken morale and give the enemy something to exploit. So everyone outright lied about it.

...except the Spanish. Because they were neutral in the war and didn't have a motive to lie. So their accurate numbers looked excessively large compared to everyone else's lies, so they sort of became the go-to to reference the flu under the assumption that they were suffering from it worse than anyone else.

I think it kind of fell into the same trap as King's Quest VIII, where Sierra basically gave up on the entire premise of point-and-click adventure, tried to trend chase and gloss it up for "modern" audiences, and ruined pretty much every franchise they ever had in the process. Gabriel Knight was a victim of that as well.

Pretty sure most of the really old "lore" is all bullshit. Like how the Tsaesci "ate all the men in Akavir" but it's implied that "ate" really means "dominated the culture of."

Like Tiber Septim had Akavirii soldiers in his armies, and they weren't snake people

It also doesn't help that a lot of the old lore was basically written by a single guy, and he was kind of an insane genius. But he doesn't work there now so the current staff has to try and figure out what he intended and what stuff meant and whether or not they still consider certain things canon or not.

But it's also a setting very heavy with ideas of transformation and metaphysical bullshit, so it's also hard to tell what's supposed to be metaphor and what's supposed to be literal. And whether the in-game information sources you're reading are even accurate, or just someone in-universe misinterpreting things.

I mean, the underlying plot of the Thalmor in Skyrim is that they're effectively trying to kill God and destroy the universe so they can go back to being gods themselves. But no one ever explicitly says that or spells it out for you. So it sort of comes across like the Thalmor are just kind of assholes. Meanwhile you yourself are a pseudo-reincarnation of multiple people (including a god) because reincarnation and avatarhood works really, really weirdly in the Elder Scrolls universe. So most people miss the deeper themes. Especially if they don't have the patience to read every single book they come across (and obsessively string bits and pieces of info together across multiple games).

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I believe it should be your biggest. That way you have a chance to burn off all those calories during the day. Dinner should be your smallest meal so that your body isn't packing away those unused calories as fat while you're sleeping.

Pretty sure the actual science suggests you're best off eating a medium breakfast, large lunch, smaller dinner.

Your body doesn't digest as efficiently when you first wake up as it does when you're fully awake in the middle of your day. Your metabolism isn't fully powered up, so you're not processing those early calories as efficiently, whereas your intake in the middle of the day is much more effectively processed.

It seems like modern writers are just so bad at writing anything interesting, their go-to strategy is to constantly go back and break things that other better writers wrote decades ago. Which is sad.

Kinda weird to reference a show that ended ten years ago but I enjoyed it.

Modern entertainment is entirely built on mining nostalgia. If something was popular 10-20 years ago, somebody is going to be trying to figure out a way to exploit it.

It's telling that the number one film at the box office right now is a remake of a film from 44 years ago that was based on a book from 85 years ago. And why the biggest movie the week before was Jackass - which was popular 20 years ago. And before that was Scream... the latest sequel in a franchise that hasn't had a film in 11 years.

And while the newest Matrix film kind of bombed, that's still another film sucking off nostalgia from 20 years ago.

There are no new ideas in Hollywood.

which The Spirit was definitely paying homage to

I'm not even sure I'd go with "paying homage to" - it was Miller actively aping the style of Sin City because Miller was the driving force behind getting The Spirit made (and possibly the only person on Earth who actually cared about the franchise).

Up to that point Miller's only real experience with film was Sin City and 300 (both ridiculously overstylized green-screen films), so that was kind of the only frame of reference he had to work with when he became both writer and director for The Spirit. Maybe having a more experienced screen-writer or director might have helped salvage it, because they would have been able to compensate for Miller's weaknesses.

If anything, that might be my biggest complaint about the film - it was trying to do The Spirit as if it was Sin City, but The Spirit had a radically different tone/feel as a comic, so it wasn't a good fit. Less green-screen and a different tone might have worked better.

Then again, maybe not. It might have been doomed no matter what tone it took, because it was a franchise most people didn't remember/care about anymore. Sort of similar to how Dick Tracy kind of flopped in the 80s... it was a product of its time, but it's time had already passed.

Same reason I tend to loathe whenever people talk about doing remakes of 80s cult films - most of them are films that only work because it was the 80s, and any attempt to redo them now will run into the brick wall of tonal dissonance and shifting values and expectations, resulting in inevitable disappointment and dreck. Leave the past in the past. Or let the past inspire you to do new things, not just ape the old.

If you're obsessed with making sure your team is as diverse as possible, you're probably not spending as much time worrying about whether your team is actually qualified, or your product is actually good.

If something is good I don't care who made it or stars in it or who/what the characters are. If something is bad I don't give a shit how diverse the people who made it are (except to potentially blame said diversity for the thing being bad in the first place, thus resulting in the exact opposite of what diversity is supposed to encourage in the first place).

But I'm a privileged (mostly) straight cis white male, so the Internet constantly tells me my opinions don't matter anyway.

About fucking time hope it's as good as the first

Hard to say if it even can be - the studio bankruptcy and reorganization means that the studio calling itself "Telltale" today isn't really the same studio that made the first game in terms of personnel and vision. And they've said they scrapped all the ideas they originally had for a Wolf Among Us sequel, so this one might feel more disconnected from the first and things like tone might be different.

That being said, it IS a game based on an outside source (the Fables comics), and supposedly they subcontracted out to a different studio to help (and that studio actually had a bunch of ex-Telltale employees), so maybe they can luck their way into a good game.

Then again, it's not like this would be the first sequel to a Telltale game to kind of stink even without all the extraneous bullshit - the second season of Batman was way worse than the first, and Minecraft: Story Mode season 2 wasn't as good as the first one either. And lots of people would say the same about the Walking Dead games. If anything, I'm not sure Telltale has ever managed a worthwhile sequel.

A least Wolf Among Us doesn't have the added problem that both Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones suffer from - ie, if they want to do a sequel to those, the fact that both franchises have since kind of shat the bed and people are way less interested in them now than they were years ago means there may be way fewer people willing to play the Telltale version. Fables was always kind of niche, and while the series is long over by this point, I feel like most Wolf Among Us fans never read the comics anyway.

Werent people disappointed with it last time it came back?

Were they?

Yes.

A lot of people (me included) felt like the new seasons weren't anywhere near as good as the original ones (especially the stand-alone movies, which were bleh), and bringing it back kind of ruined what was essentially a perfect series finale. None of the new episodes really did much to justify the revival, and a lot of episodes felt like they were just retreading old ground.

Another reboot now will presumably feel even worse and even more pointless.

People always think they want more of a thing they love, but often shows that go too long or keep getting rebooted just get more and more tired, with less and less passion and worthwhile ideas, so it starts to feel plodding, dull, and mediocre. Far better to just have a fantastic show that only lasts a few years than an average show that never ends.

Plus, there's the added problem that a revival fueled by a streaming service is by its very nature going to have a much more limited audience (ie, anyone who doesn't have or want Hulu won't be able to watch it). And the current success rate of old popular shows revived on streaming services isn't very good - most of them wind up feeling more like terrible nostalgia pandering mediocrity than anything resembling the original success, and they mostly seem to turn out to be fart-in-the-wind afterthoughts that no one gives a shit about six months later.

Sure, a Futurama reboot could be fantastic, but it could just as easily be a sad disappointment.

to undercut local small town shops and put them out of business in order to jack up the prices after

1) You're describing Wal-Mart there more than you are Costco.

2) "local small town shops " are a myth. I don't think I've seen one for 20 years. Certainly not one that sells the same things Costco (or Sam's Club, or BJs, or Wal-Mart) does.

I've always loathed cigarette smoke. It might be because both my parents smoked when I was a kid (though my mother quit when I was still relatively young and my father eventually stopped smoking in the house), or it might be something basic and biological that's always been part of my makeup, but it's the main reason I never even remotely considered smoking as a teen/adult and always found it to be a disgusting habit. Which later extended to marijuana as well.

I've actually passed on dating women who were heavy smokers because of it. HUGE turn off for me.

I've always found SCPs in general to be lame poorly written scarypasta fanfic, but I've never heard of the Backrooms. So probably neither.

I feel safe in saying I have never played a single game with EAC. Or ever known a game had EAC. Or even heard of EAC before this topic.

I hate people who say they hate things like people are supposed to know what they are when it's not a common thing.

Even worse when even Wikipedia lists like 50 possible meanings for a given acronym. About a half-dozen of which are technology-related and thus could be what's being referred to in a topic about video games.

Jargon in general sucks when you're not a complete nerd in the field being discussed.

The Seeker.

I saw it for free in a theater, and still almost walked out three times to demand my money back.

Afterwards, I basically wished really, really hard that anyone and everyone involved in making it would die of painful testicular cancer. Even the women.

If I ever win the lottery, I will spend all of the money hiring assassins to hunt them all down like dogs and kill them in the street.

I didn't like the movie, is the point I'm making here.

Hate to break it to you, but many sex workers lick boots.

And a lot of them make the customer do it instead.
