Well the thing is we don't have Spider-Man. We don't have a reliable and foolproof means of subduing criminals that wouldn't cause threat to their lives. Like webbing for example. We only have means that would potentially cause serious harm to someone if used improperly. Bats, punches, tasers. All things that could kill someone else.

I can get behind the ideals of a citizen looking to bring criminals to proper justice under the law, but the risks associated with that for both the citizen and the intended targets make it a poor idea in practical terms.

And then of course, the vigilante might also make mistakes, and themselves be subject to the law.

Well, that's part of the reason they wear masks lol.

In all honesty? I debated this incident under the assumption that the murder victim was guilty of that crime. My goal was to establish my firmly-held belief that no one is worthy of taking someone else's life in vigilante judgment regardless of the crime committed except in cases of immediate threat.

That's what I took my share of grief over.

I didn't take a stance to challenge whether he was actually guilty of it or not, because I couldn't know either way, and any argument I made to that effect would be of little weight.

Regardless, this outcome, such as it is, only serves to underline a very practical reason not to support vigilante judgment, even if my argument was more along the moral/ethical avenues.

What about vigilantes that don't kill? Say, an irl Spider-Man? Not attacking you, just curious on your position.

We waste money all the time, trillions of dollars over the years, especially with the military industrial complex. Reparations have been paid multiple times over this country's history, but when the subject of exploring options for recompense for black descendants of American chattel slavery comes up, it's suddenly time to start poor mouthing.

Because the amount would be in the trillions. It's not feasible, even if you could somehow make them equitable.

The median income for both white and black men are both under 50,000 dollars a year. Women are a tad lower in both demographics. Asian people have the highest median income, and latin americans are between white and black.

Most people are poor. Most people are making less than 50,000 dollars a year.

I'm not projecting anything. It's a logical deduction, and a pretty simple one at that. Giving one race seven figure checks, thus elevating them above all others, would cause massive resentment unlike anything we've ever seen in this country. The party that handed out those seven figure checks wouldnt be put back into power for decades, if ever

And the worst part? Some 90% of people who win the lottery are broke a decade later. So 10 years from now, most of the people who'd received reparations would be right back where they are now, except racism would be at an all time high, and no one would want to hear about it.
