I guess one reason is dressing up seems totally pointless but it's an essential thing for pretty much all superheroes.

A couple common reasons for this are to make themselves into less of a celebrity and more of a symbol, and also to establish and maintain a secret identity so the villains they fight don't target their loved ones in retaliation

There was no other reason that she would have been holding the camera just to tell her cat that it didn't have a donut toy

The dog's body language also suggests that it was expecting a treat, praise, or some other form of reward for bringing the toy to the cat

you are coming dangerously close to realizing that a lot of criticism leveled at chrono cross' plot is that people want to see all their 16 bit best friends from chrono trigger in another game (where nothing bad ever happens to them because anything less than a perfect happy ending is "shitting all over it")

I'd say having Magus in the game to resolve the Guile speculation would be a good thing despite what they did to the other OG CT characters.

So in your opinion, "good writing" is shoehorning a character into the game for literally no reason other than to establish that they're not a different character who is not demonstrated in the game itself to BE that character and was only briefly considered as such during the early stages of development?

Yeah, once Dan stopped trying to be incredibly high-energy and just chilled out, he became incredible. You could really tell when he was first brought on to the role he was trying to fill Jon's "just make loud noises" gap and it took a while for him to let his actual personality and wit come through.

Another thing I thought was awesome about Chrono Cross was the character Sprigg. She had the ability to transform into any monster she defeated which was a lot of fun. Most games dont let you play as every monster in the game in addition to an already huge cast of characters.

Sprigg was such a broken character once you got the right Doppelgangs, lol

Anybody who didn't keep Sprigg in their party because her base form was the weakest character in the game really missed out

Yeah, but Suikoden also had its fair share of recruitable characters who did nothing but pad the roster of combat characters. As I recall there were six blacksmiths, three chefs, and a hot tub guy who didn't really have anything to do with the plot and could have been non-combat additions to the base, and that's just off the top of my head.

If you're gonna give Chrono Cross flak for having too many playable characters with no story relevance, you have to give Suikoden that exact same flak.

They only did that to Guile because they wanted to focus on other things such as a huge cast. Guile was meant to have a much much bigger role. Everyone who knows anything about CC knew this.

If Guile secretly being Magus in disguise was something critical to the plot, they would have kept it as a main element of the plot. If they were able to cut that aspect of the character during planning, then it wasn't really a necessary aspect to begin with.

This isn't hard to grasp.

So are a lot of Pokemon, but people still love those games even if they have no intention of using a Bibarel.

I say this a lot, but most of Cross's cast are just a fun bonus to recruit if you want to go for completion. You still get your cast of core characters that are story-based recruits, but somebody like, say, Skelly is optional for a reason. He doesn't matter, but he's a fun reward for doing a sidequest.

Imagine the main antag and protags dialogue being:

Lavos wasn't technically a villain in the sense that it had a master plan and evil intent, it was just a thing that existed. Basically an animal. Yeah it was draining the planet so it could reproduce, but that's kind of what parasites do. It isn't out of malice, just survival instinct.

End of the day you're comparing two games that, despite sharing a universe and continuity, are very different from each other in every way.

And it's entirely possible for both games to be good on their own merit, which they are.

Trying to turn it into a binary "one is good, therefore the other is automatically bad" is absolutely stupid.
