all these companies already have their own account systems that can track what you do in one game and give you stuff in a different game, they dont really need the blockchain for that

i got a TF2 hat for playing Poker Night at the Inventory like ten years ago now

it's doable but rarer. it's not perfect of course, but NFTs can function as a certain string to find a character's data from one game to another. i'm thinking of stuff like Mass Effect or Golden Sun, or the Gwent/Witcher idea, or what if a company wanted to end one MMO but have people join the other MMO with that same character/some adjustments to it?

this isn't exclusively something that only NFTs can do but it's one area where it might be better as it can work across platforms. coded something for mobile? for Windows? for Windows 5 years later? that key still works to pull up that info, like a mini torrent if nothing else.

of course i don't know how the fuck this is something you buy as a consumer. it's just something usable on the backend.

tony, there was no good way to handle this situation. hell, he tried using the trump playbook of closing borders but it was even dumber since it was already here by then. of course biden can lose due to covid, meaning that the sooner he transitions from zero policy attempts to those focused on living with covid, the better for him. on that end, this variant could be helpful to him.

i mean it's a million new cases of an even more contagious strain of which vaccines and delta antibodies don't protect against the infection of very well.

like i can't give him particular shit for this and a lot of the shutdown is a case of a lot of industries having major disruptions over 1-2 months before resuming back to normal. biden can't really be blamed for this and it's become very clear that this strain is something people suffer from, not die from.

Except being NFTs allows them to be digital products that can be sold. Without the authenticity it ceases to be something that people would pay for.

i don't understand these sentences at all.
digital products are sold because... digital products are sold.
the authenticity is the game telling you "hey, this is yours."

scarcity is also a similar thing, gacha games tell you the rates. like if your objection is that some of them lie about it fair, though the popular ones don't and there's enough people who are damned sure to check. NFTs aren't the solution to that as much as just not lying when you say "our rate is 3% for SR," which is something you don't run into often.

Collectible NFTs: Far fewer people would pay for these or assign value to them if there was no proof of ownership.

huh? proof of ownership isn't what assigns it value at all. the game/company telling you its value does. even if you disagree with it because that character/person is far overvalued, you accept the shit luck.

Digital Art is basically just selling digital prints/commissions. the only benefit here is that the claim of "official ownership" manages to make people throw more money at them, assuming it's the actual artist. when done right this is fine, it's just done wrong a lot too. but that's a distribution issue and can be resolved that way. there's not much difference here though and once the fad is done there shouldn't be much difference.

for what it's worth this:
And sure, Blizzard to turn around one day and say "we're turning off the hearthstone servers so it doesn't matter if you have those assets in your wallet because the game doesn't exist anymore" then someone else could make a different game that adds functionality to those same assets you already possess.

actually does have some value to it in the form of sequels. they can say "Heartstone is over, we're going to Heartstone 2 and your cards are transferred to that."

this is probably done easier through NFTs/blockchains because the tech for that will be more consistently the same as opposed to a 5-10 year old game. there's definitely an element on this which would make the transfer of data easier. some cross-game integration can also be done with this, like Gwent can have a game of its own but you can play with the actual cards in The Witcher 3 as well.

Now take that same game, but instead of having a shop where the whales can buy an infinite amount from the developers, you *have* to play the game to earn the premium token and only a finite amount of tokens get generated as time progresses. This allows the other players to either keep their premium currency that they earned for themselves and use it to make their own character stronger and buy their own advantages, or opt to sell to someone else who wants to pay other players for the same advantage that they previously would have been paying the game directly for. The devs will get a small % of each transaction on the marketplace so they aren't cut out altogether, but the bulk of the purchase goes to the person selling. Axie takes 4.25% for example, so if you sold $500 worth of their premium token you'd get to keep $477.50.

I don't pretend to speak for everyone, but to me this feels like an improvement

okay so to clear up a bit here...
all that's actually describing is two things, with a lot of extra fluff.

1) pay to play model. you play a game to be able to generate in-game currency. this has already gone a step further to pay for your own subscription, which is likely where i'd see this go for any MMO crossover.

2) real money trading.

like when you break down everything said here it's just "play the game, get in-game currency, don't have whale shops to increase scarcity, then real money trading." that's why Eve Online came to mind with this description: it already is pay to play and people have traded real money for ships in that game. games like this end up devolving to just spreadsheets in the end.

in terms of gaming implementations NFTs i can't think of an that aren't just worse versions of things that already exist and things that have already been rejected - waiting for paid mods being NFTs.

it's the way you underreport. when india underreported for example, anybody who knew of their history could tell you they were majorly off, though not completely intentional in how they were hiding it. Brazil, lying. US, probably incompetence is the biggest. for china, lying. thing is we knew they were way off from December 2019 with the most extreme estimates being by something almost 30x. lowest was... 6x i think? but then they cracked down harder on leaks since, y'know, china.

There is so much propaganda flying around about China, both positive and negative, that you have to constantly be reading things between the lines. And I hate to be the one to out-centrist Wang but if you somehow read that NPR article as being pro-China you've bought way too heavily into the anti-China spin.

headline.
Officials promise groceries for Xi'an, China, city of 13 million under lockdown

first half, all positive spin.
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) Chinese officials promised steady deliveries of groceries to residents of Xi'an, an ancient capital with 13 million people that is under the strictest lockdown of a major Chinese city since Wuhan was shut early last year at the start of the pandemic.

China's Commerce Ministry has contacted nearby provinces to help ensure adequate supplies of everyday necessities, a ministry spokesperson said Thursday.

State broadcaster CCTV aired a story Thursday showing building staff assembling free grocery deliveries for the residents of an apartment complex in Xi'an.

The deliveries included a box of 15 eggs, a 2.5-kilogram (5.5-pound) bag of rice and some green vegetables. Residents could also expect either some chicken or pork, it said.

the "critical" part:
Still, some people complained in comments below the segment shared on Weibo, a social media platform, that they have not received the same deliveries in their communities. Many worried if they will be able to obtain fresh vegetables and meat.

This week, authorities tightened restrictions in Xi'an so that people can no longer leave their homes to buy groceries. Previously, residents were allowed to buy food once every two days. The city is also sealed off, meaning that people cannot leave without special permission.

Xi'an reported 155 new locally transmitted cases on Wednesday, and a total of about 1,000 cases in the latest outbreak.

The numbers pale in comparison to outbreaks elsewhere in the world, but are significant for China, which continues to follow a policy of trying to eradicate the coronavirus. That has resulted in widespread lockdowns to cut the virus's spread.

China has reported a total of 101,890 cases and 4,636 deaths since the pandemic began.

even when it's critical, it's using the funky numbers and trying to make it not sound as bad. but do remember that most people just read headlines and if they read anything, just the first paragraph or two. at which point their takeaway is "oh, they're giving groceries to their people! that's a good thing!" it's framed pretty clearly as a positive for China with some light critique but still meant in a positive way. this is pretty similar to how they handle some of the worst Uighur stuff like their spin on forced sterilization. ...though seriously, the headline wasn't a giveaway that it's intended to be positive?

there's nothing reversed, china's spent billions to spread propaganda around the world. this isn't new and it's silly that you think otherwise quite frankly. here's a 2018 article that goes pretty in depth.

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/dec/07/china-plan-for-global-media-dominance-propaganda-xi-jinping

and that's not including the more recent stuff we know like them giving WaPo some $6 million in 2020. like... this is what they do. if you're hearing a strangely positive story with funky numbers about something the Chinese government is doing, it's because the state controlled media released a puff piece about it.

that's why i say it's a compromise - it's not forced anymore. that said, there's also not much reason to go out, which is why it's effective. if you don't need to go out to make money or to get food then the vast majority of reasons to leave get cut out. your reasons are 1) exercise (good), 2) social activities (variable).

if you want to then crack down on social things, that's something else but won't impact your individual freedom to step outside the house, which admittedly isn't at all a bad thing since free air and sunlight are just good to have all around, for personal health and mental health. don't need to support China style lockdowns to support the societal outreach.

he was acquitted because all 3 instances of someone getting shot were of self defense. first guy (rosenbaum) chased him, cornered him, was trying to take his gun, and had earlier said that he was going to kill kyle if he saw him alone. another person (ziminski) was there and was actively cheering on rosenbaum, saying "get him" and "kill him" as this was happening before he fired his handgun supposedly to the air. after that kyle turned around, saw rosenbaum lunging for his gun, and shot him. he was close enough that there's burn marks on the hands.

second guy kyle shot was as he was knocked down and being attacked by multiple people. he was kicked in the back, kicked in the head, and hit with a skateboard. shots were fired at the guy who kicked him in the head - missed - and the guy with the skateboard (huber) - hit, 2nd person he killed. last person kyle shot at was 1-2 seconds later: gaige initially put his hands up, kyle lowered his weapon. he then immediately went to grab his own handgun and kyle shot him in the arm with pics and videos showing finger was on the trigger. gaige admitted in court that kyle only fired after the handgun was aimed at his head.

whole sequence of events took place in under 3m.

bear in mind, it is not to prove self defense beyond a reasonable doubt either, the burden is still on the prosecutor. though they honestly did that anyway, it's pretty clearcut self defense.

still stunned that he actually did that in court considering... well, the most basic of basic rules of gun safety is finger off the trigger. now for clips... the annoying part really is that the vast majority of good clips are right wing sources. maybe there's better ones that can be found but searching on twitter with basic key words ends up constantly being 'right wing, right wing, right wing,' there's nothing here beyond that except for maybe some guys in the center. i'm saying that because this clip has Binger talk about Rosenbaum in a weird defense and then basically uses the manlet argument and i couldn't find someone else who posted the full thing, it's not broken up.

the basic gist of it is warning shots don't actually exist. if you pull the trigger, you're removing the threat by force. there's nothing positive that a warning shot can do that simply showing the gun can, the concept of a warning shots doing anything good is very hollywood.
