Y'know, I might have a shred of 'agree to disagree' level of respect for dog-haters like TC if they didn't eventually out themselves as not-so-secret cat-lovers.

Yeah, the ballistic weapon designs are...not great. Energy weapons aren't anything to write home about either. The only one that kicks ass in form and function is the Gatling Laser, and that's hampered by A) being rare as hell, and B) clogging up your inventory with half-spent Fusion Cores every time you reload. And the melee and unarmed selection was just depressing. On one hand, I can appreciate that they took a more scrapped-together approach to weapon design, but on the other, I'd much rather be using a sleek FO3 / NV-era Super Sledge than FO4's busted-ass model. The DLC at least gave melee a couple juicy new options, but holy cow was unarmed left out in the cold in this game. And don't even get me started on Pipe weapons, I'd rather run out of ammo and fight with my bare fists than use those at any point in the game.

Once I downloaded the excellent Wattz Laser Rifle mod, It quickly became apparent that for the vast majority of my playtime I'd all but thumbed my nose entirely to vanilla weapons and was just using three variants of the same mod weapon (a sniper Wattz for long-range combat, the unique Enclave Wattz with plamsa shots for mid-range, and an Institute Wattz w/ beam splitter for close-range).

As much as I loved settlement-building, I'm loathe to give anyone a hard time for hating it, because the game is ass at selling you on the concept if you weren't already gung-ho for it. Very minimal gameplay rewards, strongly insisting that you kill the pace of the opening act to trudge back to the starting point and build beds, crops and turrets for a pack of unlikeable NPCs who can't be arsed to do it themselves, Preston locking you into a mind-numbing endless cycle of radiant settlement quests, etc.

What few Fallout-brand itches I have that NV doesn't scratch, FO4 scratches them quite well. Most of those itches involve settlement-building, but the refined combat and world design do make for a fun sandbox to fart around in whenever I get bored of building.

Pity that the game stability has gone to absolute shit since the last CC update in 2019, and Bethesda has shown no inclination to do anything about it. I've given up on playing it on the XB1, so it's effectively shelved until I get a Series X or gaming PC.

To say that this is a serious, dire situation is accurate. To say that it is the beginning of "World War 3" - a phrase that has been synonymous with "nuclear annihilation" for over 70 years now - is still a wee bit melodramatic.

Couldn't finish LUCT due to the difficulty curve becoming an insurmountable cliff face, so I have to vote FFT by default, since none of the characters or plot points I did experience in LUCT actually stuck with me.

My god...if you remove all the differences IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME.

You know it. Walken's charred bug-eyed corpse haunted my dreams for many weeks to follow.

Returns was pretty grim and depressing (and one shot in particular gave me nightmares as a kid), but I'd still put it as the best of the three. Forever is really dragged down by Tommy Lee Jones playing Jack Nicholson's Joker playing Two-Face, and tbh the rest of the movie is kinda forgettable. But it still edges out Batman and Robin.

If Guile secretly being Magus in disguise was something critical to the plot, they would have kept it as a main element of the plot. If they were able to cut that aspect of the character during planning, then it wasn't really a necessary aspect to begin with.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the people who loved CT and despised CC for the usual reasons were not too keen on how they handled Crono, Lucca, Marle, and pretty much anything directly calling back to CT. And yet the crux of their argument against the large roster of recruitables is that the game didn't drag Magus back into the plot just to ruin him as well?

I was gonna say Sarah Holcomb (who was in Animal House and Caddyshack before retiring from acting), but she was also in two other movies I've never heard of, and apparently those weren't very well-received.

I say this a lot, but most of Cross's cast are just a fun bonus to recruit if you want to go for completion. You still get your cast of core characters that are story-based recruits, but somebody like, say, Skelly is optional for a reason. He doesn't matter, but he's a fun reward for doing a sidequest.

I agree, the whole 'cast is too big' issue is way overblown and misunderstood. Having not read his post, I'm going to assume Fake Vegy's rebuttal to this is that having a large cast of recruitables totally took time and energy away from developing the core cast. In that case, which one? The mute protagonist? The heroine who's either absent or comatose for half of the game for story reasons and is developed perfectly adequately when she's onscreen?

The argument loses its water when you remember that any plot-related dialogue the 'useless' party members have is the same stock dialogue filtered through an accent program. The dozen or so party members who aren't useless to the plot - Radius, Fargo, Viper, Karsh, Riddel, etc - get about as much onscreen time and character development as your average non-Terra / Locke / Celes party member.

I used to hate Ribbon Road, but now I ace it every time, barring some particularly obscene AI fuckery. It's one of the few racetracks in 200cc + Hard COM where I can reliably get a good breakaway lead.

The trick is to maintain a continuous skid and build up a purple boost during the first set of turns up until the first jump, and do the same in the set of turns before the second jump (in the area with the mechakoopas).

And on the wavy blue ribbon road, don't jump-boost off a wave unless you're absolutely sure you're lined up in the middle of the track. After enough times flying off this section of the track while trying to get a jump boost, I just gave up and started racing it as carefully as possible, and things got a lot better.

The only think that still gets me on MK8 RR is that one sweeper turn after the first switchback, just before the first jump. I just can't seem to reliably time the turn / braking correctly, and that's assuming that another racer doesn't clobber me in passing because I'm slowing down.

Cheese Land still generally pisses me off the most, though; can't think of a more appropriately-named track.

Hela was the villain of Thor Ragnarock and not redeemed in any way. Magica De Spell is still a villain in Ducktales. I'm sure there are others, as well.

Mother Gothel in Tangled and Bellwether in Zootopia also spring to mind.

When I suffer a cheesy death in a game, wipe out the enemy with a righteous fury on the 2nd try, and the game immediately crashes once I'm done.

I don't want to turn my nose at this just yet, but I gotta say that I'm pretty over these big IP multiverse mashups at this point. After Ready Player One and Space Jam: A New Legacy they just feel like a cynical flex on the studio's part, and they don't feel nearly as special and unique as Who Framed Roger Rabbit did.

The Ducktales reboot is the only recent example I can think of where I genuinely enjoyed / appreciated these kinds of callbacks (which is ironic, considering how the Rescue Rangers were used in that show - I honestly thought we were getting a rebooted spinoff series based on that when I clicked on the topic title, similar to how they're spinning off a Darkwing Duck reboot.)

By that I mean those instances where a bunch of little game mechanics line up just right to give you a memorable, completely unscripted, almost cinematic moment that you'll never again be able to replicate no matter how hard you try.

My personal bests include:

Skyrim - my second dragon encounter. Obviously there's the scripted first encounter at the Western Watchtower, but I was new to the game and didn't know that most subsequent dragon encounters were determined randomly. So I happened to be on the road just outside of Windhelm, where two wolves started howling at me. "Aaaoooooooo!" "Aaaaoooooo!" And immediately after they howled - almost as if it was answering them - there was a great "BWWWWAARRRRRRRRR!!" and a dragon landed on top of them. I didn't even see the son of a bitch coming, it just landed right in front of me and proceeded to nuke the uppity wolves. Never seen anything timed quite so perfectly it in the hundreds of dragon encounters since, and it was really special that it happened to occur on my first random dragon encounter.

Fallout 3 - I was in some metro tunnel with a unique-named raider, and thought I'd lay a trap for him with some mines in a short stairwell. Then, in what is easily the most spectacular kill I've ever gotten in one of these games, he tripped the first two mines which were set a few steps lower; this crippled both his legs, which caused him to collapse forward; as he did so, he somehow managed to land face-first on the remaining mine, which blew his head clean off.

The level of die-rolls that needed to line up just right for this to have played out exactly as it did must be astronomical. One of the worst things about explosives in Bethesda Fallout games is how splash damage can completely fail to register if even the slightest environmental object gets between the explosion and the target - I've seen enemies walk through Mini Nuke blasts completely unscathed because they happened to be standing behind a waist-high fence post when it exploded. But in this case it actually paid off, because otherwise the third landmine would have exploded along with the first two.

Return of the King winning Best Picture was the last time I spared a genuine thought concerning the Oscars.

I imagine getting paid in dong sounds like a hell of a retirement plan for some.

What keeps me coming back to these movies is that I like the characters they've developed, and I enjoy seeing their further adventurers and development. So the only thing that's really changed for me personally is that Cap was not only my favorite character, but also the heart of the MCU; his absence is becoming increasingly noticeable, and that's going to be a tough role for any existing character to fill. I've loved Sam since he first appeared onscreen, but he worked best with Steve and doesn't quite have the same magic with Bucky.

Beyond that, as far as I'm concerned they're still trucking along with much the same momentum / consistency of quality that they've had since Phase 2. Shang-Chi was great, NWH gave plenty of nostalgic warm fuzzies, the D+ shows have all been enjoyable, and the worst they seem to be capable of are flicks like BW and Eternals which, while underwhelming, were still enjoyable enough that I didn't feel like I wasted my time (by contrast, Venom 2 did feel like a waste of two hours of my life).

Came in to say this.

I know we've already got 3 fricking Rainbow Roads in MK8, but I really want DD's version in there so I can hear an updated version of that game's rendition of the RR theme, which is still my favorite. Also the course is hard as balls, so it'd be fun to see the sheer madness of it in 200cc.

I've never really cared for it. The ice-skating Shy Guys were cute, but that's about it. It's nowhere near as boring as Dry Dry Desert, I'll give it that, but having both of those be DD's initial representation in MK8 over something like Daisy Cruiser, Mushroom Bridge / City, Wario Stadium, Dino Dino Jungle, etc added a layer of disdain on Sherbet Land that wasn't there before.

I'll hold out for the Tugma line, thank you.
