That's my point. By forcing nearly every game to have sprint and ADS you can't have games that do different stuff like this. Uniformity stifles creativity and innovation.

I don't think Overwatch necessarily gains anything from being a mostly hip-fire shooter, nor do I think it's creative/innovative. It all depends on the way its utilized. CoD having a sprint mechanic was necessary because of the nature of the shooter.

Now if you're arguing that certain games have no business having one or the other, I agree. But it's not right to accuse it as being toxic to the genre as a whole.

There's a reason scoped guns were godly in early shooters that had them; they provided a distinct advantage over guns that didn't have them.

What more is hip-firing guns other than a spray and pray fiesta every single time?

Look at a game like R6S, where headshots are instant kills. Taking time to aim is rewarded more than just firing from the hip, or even aiming center mass.

So no, there is no vacuum where games with ADS are killing the FPS genre. DOOM 4 works without ADS because your guns are lasers with explosive hitboxes the size of refrigerators, you move so fast it's like a permanent sprint, and your enemies do the same. ADS/sprinting aren't necessary because the game doesn't make them so.

Anyway, sprint buttons are okay for me, but respawning on Overwatch takes way too much time for those who aren't DPS characters.

Aiming though? Have you seen Rainbow Six Siege? Aiming is a big deal for certain shooters and not nearly as much for others.

Most PS4 Pro games have this as an option. Except Skyrim, which is insane because it has a native 4K option and could easily handle 60fps @ 1080.

What I instead got was a smooth-ass country ballad that sounds a lot less forced than Drink You Away. Like an unironic country music fan friend of mine said, he sounds better when he's sounding like himself.

Long story short, Desmond and his ancestors are descendants of Those Who Came Before, all of which had enhanced sense and agility, hence his Eagle Vision and climbing coming naturally.

I feel like everybody kind of looks back at that era of video games as something it wasn't. As mentioned, the game came out 1 year into the PS3's life cycle and 2 years into the 360's as a completely new IP.

What else did we get on consoles in 2007 that's still alive? Like Bioshock (barely), Mass Effect, and Uncharted?

I mean, it got a 9.0 from gamespot not 9.5 although not like reviews (especially of the most laughable industry of all) should ever matter.

Anyway at the time it was really something else. Most people called it repetitive and it pretty much is, but I feel lucky that it was one of the first few games I played outside of gta so I actually didn't mind it one bit, though I'd be hard pressed to play it now.

But yeah all points you mention like no fast travel are very much true. I honestly just really liked the crusades era theme and the story had a lot of intrigue, both the ancient assassin's story and the modern day story, about the only time it was ever intriguing.

And hey, it will make you appreciate AC 2 and the contrast between the likable Ezio and the kind of just there Altair.

Altair's segments in Revelations are some of the best in the series, so he definitely got better with time.

I played AC2 first so I've been putting this off until now

My problem is that all 3 cities look and feel almost identical aside from a few landmarks

God 2 was such an improvement I think I might 100% it

2 improves in literally every way

Ezio climbs twice as fast and has extra climbing abilities
You have two hidden blades instead of 1
To that extent you have more weapons than just a sword/hidden blade/knives
You can assassinate from haybales, from the air, and on ledges
FAST TRAVEL
Ezio isn't a pompous ass like Altair was and therefore is more appealing to new players
One of the greatest final boss fights in the history of video gaming
Running away from enemies is even easier/there are mechanics that can reduce your notoriety
CUTSCENES
Hell AN ACTUAL STORY

There's a reason AC2 is known as the ultimate comeback kid in video games

AC3 gets such a bad rep too; I hope they remaster that so I can experience it again properly

2 is one of my favorite games ever and Brotherhood is like the Super Mario Galaxy 2 of the series so really 1 and Unity are the black sheep

I tend to like games I play because I do research on it before blowing money. I didn't do research on AC1.
It's the worst game I ever played.

Granted, it did get a lot of things right the first time, but compare that to Unity, which somehow went back a million steps in the process of jumping to 8th gen and I think Unity is still worse.

This game is the epitome of repetitive.

Let me tell you what I've been doing this entire time:

1. Ride to a fucking city because there's no fast travel
2. Do 3 side quests that are all the fucking same to unlock the assassination
3. Listen to a bunch of dialogue with still models because Goobysoft didn't know what cutscenes were in 2007
4. Throw my target away from his 40 guards to hidden blade him
5. Repeat x9

All the while I'm being harassed by beggars and I have no money to throw at them, heralders who repeats the same lines before I can even leave the area, and literally 30 thieves who I'm supposed to defend because they were caught stealing, fuck me.

And to think GameSpot gave this a 9.5 lol

Luckily the best game in the series is next and I think I'll appreciate it even more now

Drink You Away was eventually a single.....in 2015.

Let me ask you this. If he released that as a lead single, would you blame people for assuming the rest of the album is like that and therefore get turned off from it? Take Back The Night and TKO were infinitely more radio friendly, even if they didn't compare to Suit and Tie. He tried it with Filthy on MOTW and it unfortunately backfired. Thankfully I trusted it enough to not dismiss the album. Danja explained that it was intentionally supposed to sound familiar to get people used to the eventual country inspired sound and that makes sense, but for the average person, they heard a FS/LS track.

And listening to MOTW closer, he definitely improved the Drink You Away sound by miles. People who I showed Drink You Away to that were big on country (so mainly older people) complained that his voice wasn't suited for the country vibe of the music. I showed them MOTW songs and they tended to like it more, primarily because they felt he wasn't trying to emulate a certain sound, but rather got comfortable with his own.

Tbh I think this whole album is in response to the amount of love Drink You Away got

I never thought that song was anything more than okay but people liked it so much it was an impromptu single and a highlight from 20/20 2/2 for many. I guess part of the charm was how out of place it was compared to the rest of the album

So I can't really blame him for trying to make an entire album that has a similar sound as a result

I think the era's presented in Unity and Syndicate sound pretty interesting too. Are they fun gameplay wise?

Unity no, Syndicate yes.

Part of Unity's problem is that the world building is mostly nonexistent. You're thrown into the French Revolution, and the Templars are responsible for the actual revolution, for some reason. Arno story-wise has no reason to be an assassin. The Assassin's Order in France are mostly older, noblemen and he's a rogue. The people you kill only have death flashbacks and not conversations to explain themselves. You'd have to read fucking NEWSPAPERS for an idea of what's currently going on in-game, or what year it is. Elise is a good supporting character but her relationship with Arno is so dramatic it's forced.

My favorite part of Unity, is the amount of weapons you can use. They feel meaty and different.

Which is good, because you only have that primary weapon. No hidden blade, no side weapons, no upgrading your pistol. Fucking Unity.

Syndicate in comparison, is a blast. The RPG elements and perks make you feel like playing each character, London is nice and open and they make it easier to get up and climb down walls, and the story is so over the top like how an Assassin's Creed game should.

I realized when I was listening to 20/20 part two and I was the only one that liked it that JT will probably never outdo himself again, and honestly thats OK. Man of the Woods isnt anything transcending, but is definitely something Im going to be keeping in rotation for the rest of the year.

Syndicate is everything Unity shouldve been and more. Jacob and Evie are likable protagonists even if theyre not the brightest, the gang system makes you feel like London is actually being influenced by your changes, and it took the climbing system from Unity and made it even better with various little changes and the big grappling hook.

How do you take something so good (AC2) and make it even better? Idk how, but Brotherhood managed to do it. From the character models to the environments to the story, if theres one game you want to 100% its probably this one. The story is a direct sequel to AC2 and picks up right at the end of it, so definitely want to play 2 first.

As someone who's played everything in the main series except Origins:

2>Black Flag> Brotherhood> Syndicate> 3>Rogue=Liberation> Revelations> 1= Unity

2, Black Flag, and Brotherhood of the best games I've ever played, no hyperbole.

2 improves on 1 in pretty much every way. I just beat 1 properly this year and holy shit is it the epitome of repetitive. It also has one of the best final boss fights ever.

Black Flag was so good I 100%'d it. The ship combat aside, there is plenty to say and do on land, Edward is the most realistic protagonist in the series, it has an ending that doesn't leave you guessing for once, and the combat never gets old, especially ship plundering.

People keep bitching about 3's long ass intro segment (which is fair) but once the game opens up it becomes probably one of my favorite in the series. The world is just so much fun to roam around in, and the inclusions of seasons make it even moreso for me. This is probably the first game in the series where the Assassin/Templar fight feels bigger than just you, and the amount of things to do can be staggering, even if some of them aren't as great as the others.

Rogue is Black Flag 2, and while it's back in colonial times, it's not really better or worse than Black Flag. The story makes the Assassin's comedically evil and the Templars comedically good, and it's kinda on the short side. Still definitely worth picking up.

Liberation is a mobile AC, and has many of the things you'd hope that were in 3. However, the audio quality is iffy, the three persona mechanic can be clunky at times, and the story is just barely there. Still recommend playing it after 3 though, I've heard most people preferred it over 3.

Revelations is only worth playing if you care enough about Ezio or Altair, which I did. Their personal storylines are concluded satisfyingly here, but the primary conflict in Constantinople was so boring that I couldn't wait to go back to the Ezio/Altair segments. That being said, those Altair missions are some of the best in the series.

Unity....fucking Unity. Despite being set in my dream era of the French Revolution, the game does very little meainginful stuff with it. Arno is Ezio-lite, and has no real reason to be in the Assassin's this game other than his father was in it. Some of the memories just feel like plain busywork, the performance was atrocious when it came out and now just became playable, and there is a dumb amount of chests to open. It's still worth playing today, but imagine how pissed I was paying $60 for it.

1 is the epitome of repetitive. I'm playing through it right now just to say I did, and holy shit. No fast travel, Altair climbs like a turtle, every single memory is the exact same in terms of presentation, and the modern-day story makes just about no progress. Still looks incredible in 4K though.
