Luke Weaver is great. For the season, Weaver's got a K-BB% of 23.4%, which would rank 5th in baseball, behind Sale, Kluber, Scherzer, and Kershaw. He's even got an above-average grounder rate. Obviously, he hasn't done it in a full season, but he's been awesome.

I love a cheeseburger in any form, so McDonald's' doubles are decent. You can get two for $3, which is a pretty great deal. Culver's has a fantastic burger, but it's not cheap, and I don't know how many exist outside of St. Louis. Everyone talks about Shake Shack, but those don't exist here.

How does Life is Strange compare to the Telltale narrative games? I really liked the first Walking Dead one, but it seems like the narrative games after TWD had bugs and never really improved the gameplay.

I was never allowed to watch TV until I moved out, so I missed peak Simpsons, but I remember an all-Meg episode where she was put into a daycare and she had to escape or something. Bart wasn't in that episode, was he?

I never thought I was a cat person, but my little Colby has been my buddy for about eight years. He's 23 pounds, though. That's not good.

Dogs are still better, but it's nice not having to plan around a dog and its needs to go outside.

Do Game Overs make you restart the whole game? That's how it worked in the old games. I never got close to a Game Over in Mania, but I'd be pissed if it made me start all over. Sonic 2 and its zero-ring final boss gave me dozens of game overs as a wee lad, which was the epitome of frustration.

I meant they make you go back to the first act of the current stage, but that's still pretty stupid. I think that's actually how the old games worked, but you had to use a continue and if you ran out of continues, then you'd start the whole game over. With Mania they should have just made it so a game over takes you to the beginning of the current act. I've seen some complaints that still using lives at all is dumb, but I think that's too far.

That Sonic 2 final level is bullshit. I'd play through that game so many times and fail to beat it every time, even when I was pretty old. When I finally did beat it, I just used a bunch of save states because I don't have the patience for that. Not only is no rings ridiculous, but the "safe" hitboxes on both bosses are very unclear (a problem that plagues a lot of the boss fights in the Genesis games).

I think I know basically nothing about Mania. Should I be interested in it?

Also, I feel like we've discussed before how much total fucking bullshit the Sonic 2 final boss is. That's still the only reasonable opinion on that level, tbqh.

If you liked any of the 2D Sonics, not counting Sonic 4, then you'll really like Mania. It's made with a lot of love, and the developers are working on some of the minor bugs and whatnot.

I really hope the Cards don't keep Lynn, and I'm super fucking happy to get rid of Leake. I hated the Leake signing, and I was worried that any drop in his fastball would leave him unplayable, since he just had the 4th-worst K/9 in baseball that season. Well, Leake's fastball has lost a lot of velocity after his great start this season, and he's been awful as a result. If his fastball never returns, he becomes Allen Craig 2.0. I hope it works out for the Mariners, but they picked a really bad time to acquire Leake.

Lynn certainly deserves a QO, but his peripherals are ugly as hell, and he relies on his fastball even more than Leake. If Lynn loses his fastball, he's toast, since he literally has no other pitches. I wouldn't go more than three years on him, and I think he can easily get the Leake contract, so he's gone.

Normally, I'd be happy with freeing up a chunk of money, but not if they don't fucking use it. The team has gone into the last two seasons with glaring holes, so if they want to go into 2018 with a ton of cheap arms in the rotation (Weaver, Flaherty, Reyes all make the minimum for a few years, and Martinez has a team-friendly deal), they need to get at least one big bat. Stanton would be incredible, but it's not the type of move this front office makes.

Yeah, I was gonna say that it makes sense that a team will use every free advantage they can get. But it's a shitty thing to do, and it's WAY worse that it's a Texas team doing it.

I've watched my sister play it a little bit and it looks cool, but frustrating with how the game overs bring you back to the first act. That's something they didn't need to leave in from the old games.

I've been playing BotW again lately and thinking about getting the DLC, but it seems kind of silly to spend $20 on that in comparison to Sonic. I mean, I'm pretty much just trying to find Korok seeds and farm for armor upgrades, but it's such a nice world to explore that I still enjoy such tedious tasks.

I have two big gripes with Mania: they kept the 10 minute limit from the old games, while the levels are much bigger than the Genesis ones, which is stupid. If you want to explore at all, you are guaranteed a Time Over death in a few levels. Also, you turn into Super form when you double-tap Jump, so once you get all the emeralds, you can't fly or glide or climb or use shield abilities without transforming first, which is dumb. They are gonna patch that soon, though.

Anyway, STL, you're very close to the end!

Onto a game more of you guys might care about, have any of you played the Uncharted DLC but not DLC game that just came out? I loved UC4, but the $40 price point is scary in terms of game length.

I wish they'd have killed them. The total lack of major deaths seemed very un-GoT this season. Tormund should have died when the wights grabbed him, or at least with Beric in the final scene. I'm glad we're getting more Jaime in season 8, but I'd have shit a brick (in a good way) if Cersei let Tyrion live and Jaime die. As it is, I have no idea what Jaime can do by himself in the North. He's not bringing the Lannister armies with him, is he?

The eclipse was pretty insane. There was an eerie, greenish light about 10ish minutes before totality, and then it suddenly got dark for a couple of minutes. I could have skipped the glasses part of it, since you didn't see much with them on, but totality was crazy. I was at a local park, and hearing the kids around us freak out was great. St. Louis is close to the totality range for the next one, I think, so I'll definitely drive a half hour or whatever it is to see it again in eight years.

I was shouting from the rooftops that this isn't a playoff team back in Spring Training, but the bastards still got me good. They were average enough to stick around, and their Baseruns record is much better than their current record, so I thought, "Well, maybe...?" They go on a huge winning streak just to falter against an average Pittsburgh team.

It all makes me feel so yucky. It hurts worse when you feel those fluttering playoff butterflies in your stomach begin to emerge from their once-dead chrysalis, and instead of someone coming and destroying those butterflies in one fell swoop, your own body violently rejects them one baserunning blunder at a time.

We are juuuuuuuust on the edge of seeing the full eclipse, so people are going crazy here. We called a bunch of places yesterday that were sold out of glasses. Finally, we heard a random gas station had some, and they ended up having dozens of boxes of them. On ebay, they were going for at least $30 a pair.

I think the eclipse will be cool, but it's not a huge deal. The weather says we might get some rain or at least some clouds, which would simultaneously be a bummer and hilarious.

The music during the boss fight in Stardust Speedway (Metal Sonic) is killer. The music in general is excellent though.

Being able to fly with S&T during single player came from a fangame, I think. It's just another small thing that doesn't sound like a major deal, but it makes gameplay that much more fun.

What's your favorite level so far? A lot of people online like Press Garden, but I thought it was meh.

UFO stages are for the emeralds. There are huge rings hidden in the levels. Just fly around or climb around and you'll find some.

I think everyone is the same speed. They mostly play the same, but there are slight differences. Knuckles can't jump as high as Sonic, for example, but it's just a teeny tiny difference. If you're playing as Sonic and Tails, you can actually have Tails fly you around. Just hold Up and tap the jump button twice. It takes a bit of practice, but it's an amazing way to explore.

Yeah, like I said before, the special stages were the lowest point for me. I really wish they would have stuck with Blue Spheres for the emeralds. Well, by special stages, did you mean Blue Sphere or the 3D UFO levels? I enjoyed getting all of the gold medals from the Blue Sphere levels. There's the 14 levels from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, which are always fun, but I thought the newly created ones were mostly great.

Yep, if a team claimed him, the Marlins could either let him go and get rid of his contract for no return, or they could try to work out a deal, and if the teams can't work something out, the Marlins would have to pull him back from waivers. The Marlins would then be unable to go through this process again this season.

I'm not shocked that no team wanted to "sign" Stanton to his current deal, but I wouldn't have been shocked if a team did claim him. He's performing at an incredible level at the moment, and he'd be a huge upgrade to a number of teams. Teams sign guys to awful contracts all the time, knowing there's dead money at the end of it. I'm sure the Angels knew that Pujols was gonna hurt them in the last few years of the deal (but it turned out to be much worse than that). Same with Cano and the Mariners. The team is hoping for a few playoff runs and/or big surpluses in value in exchange for shitty performances at the end of the contract.

Stanton can opt out in 2020, I think. He either opts out and becomes a free agent, or he stays and earns $29 million over seven years. For him to opt out, he'd have to be confident that he'd get more than $210 million in a deal. The team has no control over Stanton, but there are sometimes contracts where the team can opt out of a deal. It usually costs them a decent chunk of money to "buy" the player out.

ZiPS has Piscotty as an average player going forward, and that seems about right. I don't even like Piscotty; I recently posted something elsewhere that says Pham's stellar play should force Piscotty out going forward. If Piscotty is a 2 WAR/year player over the course of his remaining 5/$29.4 million deal, and we use the very low end of $/WAR at $8 million, he's worth about $50 million in surplus value. Hell, if he's a 1 WAR player, that's still about $10 million in surplus value.

If a team is assuming the entire Stanton contract, the Marlins aren't gonna get much in terms of prospects. Fangraphs assessed his trade value a couple of months ago, and they said that after this year, Stanton has negative trade value. Now, Stanton has been incredible lately, so maybe it is closer to being neutral. But no one claimed him when it costed nothing but money. If he ever gets dealt, which probably won't happen, he's not bringing in a haul.

I wasn't trying to say Piscotty would be a huge get for the Marlins, just that Stanton's contract kills any hope for a solid return.

It's just $20, so get it now, DarkLink! STL, I think you or Squall said you liked Sonic 2, so you will like this one. It plays exactly the same. There's a ton of levels, and each boss battle is unique. About half of the levels are remakes from the Genesis games, but besides the very first level (Green Hill Act 1, of course), they are all totally different from the Genesis levels, which was a nice surprise to me. I thought the remade levels would be similar with just a small change or two, but they are completely new levels.

I need to play it a little more, but I'm pretty sure it's my favorite Sonic game ever. The one complaint is that the emerald levels are based on Sonic CD's special stage, where you were in a 3D zone and you had to chase and destroy UFO's. I never liked those stages, but they are different enough in Mania that it isn't so bad. Still not my fave, but infinitely more playable.

Stanton has felt like a future Cardinal for a few years now. I'd love to dump Piscotty on them and throw in, like, our top three pitching prospects, other than Reyes. The new owners might appreciate a cost-controlled average player like Piscotty.

Adam Wainwright is so fucking bad it's incredible. Why why why do they still pitch him. he is horrible. I love him but he is extremely done

His peripherals weren't too bad before his last start, but he was sitting at 81 mph all game. He tried to make it seem like it was a normal thing and that he was healthy enough to pitch, even though his arm is fucked and he lucked his way through five innings against a horrible hitting team. It's sad, but at least there's only one more year on his deal.

Sonic Mania is fantastic, guys! It plays like a dream, and the music is amazing. It did kind of get me good, though. The Chemical Plant Act 2 boss is Robotnik challenging you to a quick game of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, or what is generally called...Puyo Pop, I think? It's a match-4 kind of game. Anyway, I'm fucking partially colorblind, so I kept making dumb mistakes, since I couldn't differentiate green and yellow or blue and purple. Luckily, the difficulty wasn't too hard.

Guys, we did it! Sonic has the best games of any company mascot, ever!

The Cardinals literally did nothing. A ton of teams were in on Lynn, so why keep him if you aren't gonna add to the team? It's preposterous. The Cubs were a better team before acquiring Quintana, and now they got another awesome reliever and a surprisingly good catcher for nothing, so it was clearly time to sell.

I wonder if a Lynn deal fell through at the last minute or something. Maybe he was going to LA before the Darvish deal came to fruition at the deadline?

Also, to Colby's point about how much of a shitshow the series has been lately, this is finally the game fans want, etc., how many times have we heard that before? This is what people said when Generations and the Sonic 4 episodes were coming out too. There is maybe more reason to believe that Sonic Mania will be good, but it's literally a safer game than NSMB

Generations was pretty good. That was the last good Sonic game. Once I heard the awful Sonic 4 music and saw that they gave it awful physics, I was so mad. Other Sonic bros definitely go crazy for each new game, and I used to. You can imagine my despair when Sonic 4 was so abysmal! I'm 100% confident in Mania.

Also, I would LOVE if Mania is NSMB Sonic. All the NSMB games were fantastic. Well, I never played the 3DS one where you had to get a million coins, so maybe they all aren't, idk.

Continuing the discussion of the last topic...

I don't know if I'm really that excited about Sonic Mania. I like the old Sonic games, but I can't really explain why. They're enjoyable enough to play through, but nothing about the gameplay is truly special to me. Sonic Mania just seems like a nostalgia cash-in, and I don't know if I'd have the patience to play through it without having the familiarity that brings me back to the Genesis games.

After the shitshow the last what, 15 years? More? has been, I don't blame you for doubting. I just trust the dude who is running the show -- he was one of the biggest Sonic fangame creators who got hired to port Sonic 2 and Sonic CD to mobile, both times going above and beyond. He even added a level to Sonic 2, which is pretty dope.

Gameplay is identical to the Genesis games, which is something that hasn't been done since...well, the Genesis games. He's adding a dropdash move, which is awesome. Adding a move sounds lame, I know, but the spindash in Sonic 2 completely changed the Sonic gameplay. I know that after I play Mania for awhile, I'm going to totally fuck up playing through S2 and S3&K, just like I can't go back to Sonic 1 without trying to spindash ten times a level. I've pressed Down+A+A tens of thousands of times, as fast as I could, and I just can't re-condition myself.

It's literally the game the Genesis fans have been asking for since 1994, and they are finally giving it to us! I would say that if you weren't big fans of the originals, you will feel the exact same way with this game. But everything I've seen so far looks phenomenal, and while I've always been hopeful about new Sonic games, this is the only one I wasn't hesitant about. For comparison, I thought Sonic Forces looked like dogshit even before the create-a-character was announced. I was really hoping for a new 3D gameplay style by now.

Yeah, I was incredibly confused. I looked at the Twins/Tigers box score for way too long, trying to figure out how he hit with the bases loaded in an AL game.

How about that Arya, eh? Do you guys agree that her scene in the first episode would have been way better if her last scene in season 6 didn't happen or just wasn't shown first?

Jon Gray is pretty good, and Zimmerman isn't nearly as good as his overall numbers show, so I wouldn't have thrown a fit. But I never care -- as long as I don't suspect collusion, all trades are okay. And first base is absurdly deep this year.

In my $50 points league, a guy traded Lester for Koda Glover (when he was the Nats closer for like a week), which is absurd, but I didn't veto it. It was a horrible deal, but both guys agreed to it, so what can I say?

Also, the guy getting Glover had the only team who could catch me this season, so it was nice to watch him complete a horrible trade as he desperately tried to claw his way up the Saves category in a vain attempt to cling to the possibility of maybe getting close to catching up to me.

I really don't wanna be the guy who roots for his favorite team to lose, but I really hope the Cards are out of the race enough to forget about buying this year. The Cubs were already a better team before they added Quintana, and as long as the Brewers get some pitching, they have a big enough lead to hold the Cardinals off.

In an ideal world, they would sell Carpenter and Rosenthal, because both have been awesome this year, but they both have been incredibly unlucky. Like, current Carpenter is the best he's ever been; he's hitting the ball harder than ever and swinging at a career-low number of pitches out-of-zone (lower percentage than Joey Votto!!!). He's got the 12th-highest xwOBA in the game. He's awesome! Rosenthal has career highs in SwStr%, xFIP-, and fastball velocity, but his ERA is too bloated to show it. Strip away luck, and they'd be in high demand.

STLCards1991 posted...
The best player on the St. Louis Cardinals is Tommy Pham.

We are still on season topic 1 on Baseboard, but my title is "Best Phams in Baseball." Do you get it? It's because the unofficial slogan of the Saint Louis Cardinals is "Best Fans in Baseball." I was thinking about the 25-man roster during Spring Warming Ups, and I saw that Thomas Pham was starting in Triple-AAA and Joseph Martinez was starting in the Majors Leagues. I thank to my brain, "Maybe it is RIP in peace for our friend Pham, fam?"

So I gave birth to the aforementioned thread, and my message post declared that it was strange how Martinez got a spot over Pham. Well, Pham must have seen the thread, because he must have thought to him self, "no." Now, he's the best player in the Saint Louis Cards' locker area.

And wouldn't you know it, but Pham is blind. Not just blind, but legal blind! How is he so good at such a game as cricket's son, baseball?

Topicthink I made the wrong decision getting a car

I've had a car for a couple of years that leaks coolant. I don't know anything about cars, but it leaks from the place you put coolant in (I think it's the radiator?), and the leaked coolant flows into a separate coolant container. All I have to do is dump the overfilled coolant back into the first coolant receptacle before I drive anywhere. I don't do long distance driving, though.

Maybe you will have an easy fix like that.

The Leftovers had an episode where a man playing God said he disputed his paternity to Jesus. And when Jesus died, his identical twin brother took his place. Obviously it's all in good fun, but what if Jesus really did have a twin? Wouldn't that be fucking absurd?

Humanity's history would be way different.

How far in space can we go? If it's just low-Earth orbit or something, the ocean would be great. If we can magically survive the trip to the deepest depths of the ocean, we're bound to find undiscovered life, and that's pretty cool.

Could you have guessed Jonny Broxton would blow it? I bet not! Every game that Broxton pitches in is on Mozeliak at this point.

Anyways, that was my night of posting for May. I'll see you guys in a few months!

Joc's a big boy, but I thought he was gonna be decimated in that crash. He seems fine. Puig took a direct hit to the ribs, so maybe there's a fracture there. He was in intense pain for sure.

But he wasn't a closer for most of last year, either. Don't you into Korea?

Nope, there's Jansen. Roberts is dumb. But hey, he stole a major base that one time!

Also, Rosenthal isn't a closer this year.

Well, Roberts might be worse. You've got one of the best pitchers in history in your bullpen, yet you let Kershaw hit and pitch in the 9th?

Unless Jansen is unavailable, then this post never happened.

It actually gets much worse than that pic. Mario is now edgy, and Peach is "kick-ass"!

Wasn't it our long-lost friend Bachewychomp who said, "Mario should get a Shadow the Hedgehog-type of game?"
