Honestly, if taken to its full extent, beat 'em ups should be the most technical and skillful genre outside of maybe fighting games. Look at God Hand. Imagine if more games kept building off of it.

Serious Sam Series (IIRC when these go on sale they get to be like over 75% off or something crazy) SpaceChem ($10) TF2 is free to play. Pretty much everything Valve has made. The entire Half-Life series is $10 or less. Ultra generic, boring, cover-based third person shooter with some decent environments gets GOTY awards everywhere with next to none of the hate most other bulls*** series like this get.
Most perplexing is that people seem to think that there's some kind of significant difference between the first game and the second even though they're pretty much the exact same f***ing thing with some slightly different settings.
