It deals with kid Goku, and more of a gag comedy show where he goes on adventures finding the Dragon Balls and there's martial arts tournaments at the end with a bit more serious story. Dragon Ball Z is the show most of the us grew up with in the 90s, and the show that made anime explode worldwide. I watched Z in the 90s and only very recently watched the first series. Z is less gag and more serious.
