A game like Ghost Stories is kinda bad because it's a co-op game with optimal play. Forbidden Island is similar. Pandemic errs pretty close to this, but I think has enough freedom (at least in the beginning) to not fall into the pit.

Dungeons and Dragons isn't even close to being bad for the same reasons, because your individual decisions matter, and despite there sometimes being optimal ways to play your character, dice rolls affect things.

Other co-op games that have good freedom of individual play are Arkham Horror, kinda Betrayal at House on the Hill, etc.

Nah, I'd rather get that question answered by the movies. After all, the first movie really made it seem as though the First Order was a Nazi Germany type thing that is in the process of taking over the whole galaxy.

TLJ made them seem like a bunch of chumps.

Don't blame me for wanting answers when the movies make things confusing "for a reason". After all, if the movies didn't include things that were just not that important, we would never have the Rose/Finn visit to casino planet.

I felt the opposite. The PT made the galaxy feel small because they showed everything and it was like "well, I guess that's all there is". The OT and the ST just show what's needed for the stories and leave a feeling of an infinite world still to be seen.

If you "guessed that was all there was" then that seems like a personal issue with interpretation.

Bib Fortuna, because I know the name, came to mind immediately.

The issue with McCoy is that his name isn't unique, so he doesn't jump to mind as immediately. Hell, even Bones as a name has been taken over by another character who is at this point more Bones than McCoy is.

Also, Star Wars as a franchise has lasted in a different way than Star Trek. I believe there are more people who have seen RotJ than have watched Star Trek TOS.

tl;dr, if someone has reason to know both of these names, Bib Fortuna is an easier to recognize name. If someone doesn't really know either series, then they won't really know either character.

Finally got to see this film today with some family. This is going to sound strange, but I think that Rian Johnson tried to break so many little conventions that he missed out on the world-building experience that I think has always made Star Wars so enjoyable for me. There were some excellent moments, but a lot of that connective tissue that tends to make a Star Wars film satisfying to me was missing. That said, I would give this film a 72 out of 100. It tried to do something unique and surprise me as a viewer. From a booking perspective, however, it did little to enhance the main heel for the final part of the trilogy. With the emotional stakes now all depleted, this next one is going to have to overcome a lot of dead ends set up by this film. I was really enjoying the work done with characters like Rey and Poe Dameron, however. And, frankly, they didn't go far enough with Luke. I liked the risk-taking

Also, and this may be just me, but did this film feel like both the First Order and the Resistance were small potatoes?

This is really a great example of my feelings.

The Prequel Trilogy's greatest triumph was the world building. The galaxy was huge... we finally truly understood that and got to see it. From Naboo to Coruscant and every other planet inbetween, the PT made the galaxy feel like a huge fucking galaxy.

The biggest metropolitan area we've seen in the Sequel Trilogy got blown up.

I know the directors wanted to give the feel of the OT way more than the PT, but in the process, they've made the galaxy seem small again. We've seen Tattooine, cantina, Death Star, rebel base, Hoth, Bespin, and Dagobah parallels. Nothing really... expansive beyond that. That's part of why the First Order feels so weird... TFA made it clear that they're completely terrible, but we still don't really get their place in the galaxy beyond some out-of-place social commentary.

Well the movie is about finding balance through your failures and how it leads to immense strength. So all that stuff is minor side stories but it does feed into the main themes of the movie.

I agree it could've all been done in like 45 minutes which is why it felt more like an episode of a TV show, but that's still the point of the movie (other than being cool and nostalgic).

But none of those failures lead to strength. They just lead to wasted time. The only thing good to come out of any of them was Finn beating Phasma and deciding that he's Rebel Scum.

Why did Finn and Rose need to go to the casino beyond a need to get them onto the flagship? Why did Poe have his mutiny beyond a need for some pointless tension? Why does Rose exist aside from throwing a wrench in the Finn/Rey ship? Why does Benicio Del Toro's character exist beyond... star factor? Why do the Imperial Guard have a bunch of dumb ninja weapons (toys answers this question)? Why include Yoda but not Obi-Wan, who was equally important as a mentor to Luke, especially through the force?

To show how successfully the rich live in the balance of good/evil (true neutral)
To show Holdo's failure
To show how weird forced romances are
To show another example of success in a balanced approach (chaotic neutral)
It's cool
There's no nostalgic Obi-Wan doll

If only any of those had an impact on the film.

I'm still confuses as to how it "takes advantage" of it. That's like saying Batman letting Joker almost fall to his death "takes advantage" of Ledger's death.

It doesn't, I was wrong, but my criticism without that point is still valid.

Holdo could've explained her plan at any time, and it would've been along the same lines as trusting Leia.

To put it in other words, you could've gotten to point A in the movie to point C without having point B. Because everything Poe, Finn, and Rose did, did not have any bearing on the end destination for any of those characters.
