I am dumb and ended up just using regular formulas to create some basic interface elements in a worksheet. Like automatically updating calendar entries and dropdown lists so you can quickly pull up data by student or by class name. It is ugly but it works. I wish I could figure out how to make it look more official/fancier though.

Also Excel of MacOS is missing so much shit, too.

Yeah I didn't even know it was really even a thing until some guy at my previous job put together this absurd database with all the personnel information, you could generate business trip planning charts and attach people as attendees and create emails to everyone attending the trip and stuff. I didn't even know it was Excel because the standard interface was completely gone.

I wish I had the skills to do something like that -_-

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I have seen that option but wasn't entirely sure how it worked. Especially if I want to do something like have a dropdown list that's populated by names and then another frame or list that shows their classes and class dates. I actually did find a script that did something similar but it was pulling everything at once (so like if Tom Smith had gone to two classes, it showed Tom Smith - Class 1 and Tom Smith - Class 2, which is just clunky and at that point why even bother).

I'm legitimately asking even though this sounds like something an elitist would say, but what are you trying to achieve through Excel rather than e.g. python.

My experience with computer languages ends with basic old school HTML and some R. At least Excel has a graphical interface, I would have zero idea where to start with something like Python.

I will definitely explore that link out and I appreciate you sharing it.

And you're right, one-off tutorials on individual topics don't really cover enough to build a full product. And it doesn't help that I don't have a complete vision on how I even want the final product to look -_- I was imagining one page where you pull up a person's name and it shows their event history as a list and has an option to add additional events, and then another page that's arranged by months and the data prints to that automatically.

I'm trying to build a *really* simple database system in Excel using VBA and I find random tutorials here and there that kind of explain the code but it's all piecemeal.

I spent all day trying to put something together and the most progress I was able to make is a button that creates prompts where you enter data (names and classes) and it adds it to a table.

But I want to make something a little fancier that can generate like a calendar based off names and classes so you can see which students attended which classes for quick visualization. I know that's a slightly higher level than just making a list but it seems like it shouldn't be that hard. There are just so many strings of code to figure out

Is their SOLE purpose for nuclear strike?
They carry no other weapons?
Not all versions of Metal Gear were nuclear. Like, Metal Gear RAY had a couple variants, both armed with conventional armaments. Basically by the mid-2000s in the Metal Gear universe the concept of a "Metal Gear" had become a bit more ubiquitous, and one mission of the RAY type Metal Gear was to destroy other types of Metal Gear.

And Arsenal Gear was not a conventional or nuclear weapon at all - it was basically one giant platform housing an AI that could fabricate and control the flow of information in the digital age. Which is a really relevant theme in today's world I suppose.

Tyranthraxus posted...

I just don't see how any of it is superior to launching nukes from an aircraft.

Aircraft can be shot down, silo-based ICBMs are completely stationary. Mobile ICBMs give an advantage in that you can move them around and keep them relatively unpredictable to an enemy force while still being able to launch a super dangerous weapon.

Also realistically speaking both the US and USSR were experimenting with all sorts of crazy and unreal ideas for nuclear weapons throughout the Cold War.

Like, that handheld launcher in MGS3 actually existed - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davy_Crockett_(nuclear_device)

not saying that a metal gear would be practical in the real world though but it wouldn't be entirely impractical.

Road mobile ICBMs (those big rockets on the back of big trucks) are a thing, but they can't really drive up mountains or other difficult terrain. So having a mobile ground-based launcher that can cross such terrain would be pretty threatening.

Like every Bethesda game, they like to implement half-baked ideas in there that are fun to dink around in for like half an hour and then they wear out their welcome. Space combat is a prime example, it is just boring fast traveling and entering a combat encounter and then fast traveling more. Who thought that was fun? Who thought it would be fun to just fast travel between planets instead of giving you freedom to fly there yourself?

Yeah it is literally the same ChatZilla client that was in Mozilla lmao. Well, updated of course.

I just redownloaded it, I used to love this browser so much (and honestly IE 5.5/6, especially that spinning globe throbber in 5). The themes still work, but for some reason the add-on library now just goes to the Thunderbird add-on page... could be a pain to get them to work, or maybe there's an alternative way.

Also if you have nostalgia for older UIs there's a Windows Classic community out there that makes full rehauls of modern Windows to bring back the old school Windows themes. https://winclassic.boards.net/

Even though I love these older interfaces it is really difficult for me to contend with the reality that everything else out there is still designed to be Web 2.0 or 3.0 or whatever we're at now... so even if I'm using old school Netscape themes I'm still not able to explore the web like I used to, visit all the old sites I used to since they're offline, etc.

Firefox is amazing. They have been pioneers of good identity protection technologies that later ended up in other browsers, such as randomized password generation for new accounts, a free password breach monitoring service, and an email alias service (free version lets you create up to 5 email masks so you don't have to use your real email address to register for services, there's a paid version that lets you keep more). Plus it's just fast and looks nice, though the latest GUI update took a while for me to get used to - there are still mods out there to revert it to a previous look though. It has browser compartmentalization built into it using Container Tabs, so you can have like a "Personal Finance" container where you do all your online banking, stock accounts, etc., a "Google" container for using Gmail and YouTube, a "Social Media" container for using Facebook, IG, etc., and it keeps all your accounts and tracking cookies isolated to their respective containers. Meaning you won't be logged in to Google on your Personal Finance and Social Media containers unless you choose to do so. Just helps minimize tracking. It also has an add-on called Forget-Me-Not (I don't know if Chromium has one like this yet, but for a long time it did not) that lets you manage all cookies on the fly - when you load a website, you can click the Forget-Me-Not icon and it will list all the cookies being placed by the site and you can tell it which ones to whitelist and which ones to block, just in case you don't trust the built-in privacy protection.

Another good option is Vivaldi which is vastly better and is a workhorse of a browser, with integrated e-mail client and a lot of power tools for organizing ... well, pretty much everything you need. It also has a good sidebar that you can add web panels to, so I have a Facebook Messenger pane so I don't have to keep a FB tab open.

Opera sucks ever since the original company sold it to some Chinese consortium.

It's pretty good depending on where you go. I was talking to a some random guy in the Air Force last night. He gets college paid for and does some engineering job there. It does sound like a pretty sweet gig. You just gotta give up like 6-8 years of your life >_> I think they also get some kind of benefits for their first 6-8 years, but I'm not sure. I know they can roll their military time into retirement if they get a government job

Well, standard contract is 4 years. Sometimes you can go lower depending on circumstances (like when the Army can't hit recruiting numbers and they need hot bodies). 6 years is generally reserved for more demanding jobs that have longer training pipelines - they invested time and a lot of money into you learning a valuable skill and they want to recuperate that. No one signs an 8 year Active Duty contract upfront.

That being said, *all* initial contracts are technically for 8 years. It's just... say you sign a 4 year contract to go into the Marines. Well, the remaining 4 years of that 8 year commitment will be to an individual ready reserve force where all you have to do is update your address once a year if that. Like you don't really... have to do anything at all. And if you do re-enlist then that 4 year inactive reserve time goes away.

You get all the same benefits at one day in as you do at ten years in. It does take some time to "unlock" certain benefits, for instance if you want 100% of your Post 9/11 GI Bill you have to serve 36 months continuously (three years). Or, they only do 1% contribution into your TSP until you hit 2 years of service, at which point they start matching up to 5% of your contributions. And I suppose if you're single and an E-2 you're not gonna be getting a house any time soon. But otherwise all the benefits are there.

I mean, I don't think "most high schoolers" bomb it. IIRC it was written based on material you are expected to have been exposed to by 10th grade... It features multiple sections, such as individual word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, basic sciences (physical and biology), a couple of math sections, automotives and mechanics, and there is or was one logic portion. There are additional tests if you want to get into linguistics or cyber fields.

If you want to be an airplane pilot of any kind you must have a Bachelor's degree and you must take a different test, not the ASVAB. ASVAB is for people who are enlisting specifically.

The key point there is that other countries pay living wages, access to free medical care, better leave benefits, better opportunities for work-life balance, access to cheaper higher education, etc. that you won't find with private employers in the US.

I'm looking at a Master's from a top 100 university in Sweden that will cost a whopping $25,000. That's like half the cost of what it would be in the US on average.

I agree that a lot of this is all available online, and even for free most of the time. But I think college studies have been able to put a lot of the information into perspective and also guide my learning - I wouldn't know where to start if I wasn't taking these courses. I guess maybe now that I do know what's out there I could probably ditch it for self-study.

Though I've encountered several students now who actually have many years of experience in this field but who are coming to school for a professional certification, too, so I think there is still benefit in it all.

There are definitely still signing bonuses, even more than before - I've seen bonuses for shipping out right after high school, bonuses for joining with a degree, and of course there are bonuses for enlisting into specific jobs.

Besides the Tuition Assistance, free CLEP testing, and GI Bill benefits, fact that you get college credits for career milestones and certain training courses, there are increasing opportunities for higher education learning. For instance, the Navy just recently rolled out the Navy Community College which allows Sailors to get Associate's in certain fields. People from certain career fields can get Bachelor's or even Master's degrees from the National Intelligence University. The Naval Postgraduate School has opened up a cyber-related Master's program for specific career fields, too. There are also Academy seats to fill, enlisted-to-officer ROTC-style programs where you get your regular base pay and housing allowance plus get your education paid for, and some specific career-field related commissioning programs for people who want to become Nurses or lawyers.

Besides college education, you can also register into an apprenticeship program for free to earn your apprentice/journeyman qualification in a certain field, and free credentialing and professional certifications in everything from management to education to cyber security.

I probably didn't need to type all of this up but I am procrastinating hard on my own college and figured why not >_>

edit: Also they just expanded parental leave - now you get 12 weeks for a qualifying new child event (could be childbirth, adoption, etc.). Doesn't necessarily mean you'll get all 12 weeks off at once, but you are entitled to 12 weeks total. And they are starting to pay for people to travel out of area to get specialty parental planning care, including IFV and stuff like that.

I think it should be set by the state according to what the state deems most rational. I imagine a state further North would prefer one time over a state further South, maybe.

the worst is the countless hours of procrastination spent just screwing around on internet forums, not even relaxing and playing games or anything and stressing about assignments until I force something out and get it submitted with two minutes to the deadline.

It is always a fun feeling the first day when you look at your watch and see it's 12 PM already but it's really only 11, though. I like "gaining" that hour to stress and procrastinate in life even more.

I doubt they could have fixed the deeper issues with the game, which was a severe lack of meaningful roleplaying, an awkwardly paced story, and a mismatch between the side content and the main story content (i.e., side content is fast and engaging, main story content tends to be a slog with lengthy dialogue sequences).

I enjoyed it a lot because of the dumb glitches, don't know if it would be as fun without them.

I felt the same way about Halls of Torment, the first round went, I got swarmed and died, didn't really feel like I made it too far. But on my second run I lasted much longer, got a few more achievements, unlocked some more stuff. And knowing what I need to do to unlock new features helps a lot.

Forgot to mention, I like that in FatalZone when you die, your character is gone, and you have to evacuate when it's available. Makes you consider your plans a little more carefully when you go to do a raid.

Just did another round of Halls of Torture and made it a little further. Unlocking the Quest Screen helps a lot for planning runs. The character upgrade options feel a little minimal right now (like, there aren't even any damage upgrades). I like that completing Quests boosts your XP gain.

Wouldnt they also get hit with the fallout? >_>
Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the weather that day, really. Definitely not a great idea in that proximity though.

I mean, not a great idea to talk about committing mass murder of a civilian population either.

Israel really got the Russia bug...
