I dunno, I wouldn't have expected George Lucas to do a better job than Disney tbh.

He already did a worse job. People just like to pretend that a disjointed trilogy of films of widely varying quality and qualities is somehow A.) better than the prequels, which suck way worse than the sequels and are almost unwatchable unless you really, really like the worst aspects of Star Wars movies, and B.) not what the original trilogy was in the first place.

There's already another scene of Luke moping in the Falcon, which has a lot more going on for it. This is just a boring 17 second shot of Luke hanging his head. Its completely understandable why this scene was cut.

The first two movies are legit. Empire in particular still sets a really high bar for fantasy blockbuster films that has scarcely been surpassed.

RoJ basically cemented it as a franchise built around selling toys more than making a good movie, and the fan base encourages this mentality explicitly.

No, its pretty easy to fathom. All you have to do is look at the rise and rhetoric of fascism from other countries, and look at the modern day Republican party, and the parallels are striking.
