Is the DLC case in Spirit of Justice worth it? I loved Dual Destinies' DLC case but thought SoJ in general was maybe the weakest game in the series.

The Beyblade game certainly doesn't look good and the Suda51 game Liberation Maiden, I'm not too sure what to think there.

Liberation Maiden is the only thing I've picked up so far, but I haven't played it yet so idk. My feelings on the two other Guild games I own is kinda middling so I'm not sure why I prioritized buying a third one.

Doom 64 (Steam)

You know, I don't think I've ever actually played the original Doom? My boomer shooter of choice was always Wolf 3D but it's weird that didn't, you know, lead to me playing Doom. At some point.

Anyway Doom 64 is p good. It did have a bad habit of crashing trying to get to the main menu on startup (and once during gameplay) unfortunately.

I tried to pay attention to this while driving to work today but I think I changed the result by measuring it.

Lots of people don't brush before bed and I find it so fucking weird.

The real question here is "what would you drive 1 hour for 10 seconds of?"

I have trouble thinking of much of anything that's actually worth that effort. But I went snorkeling with whale sharks in Mexico once and each dive was only a few seconds. Even with three dives it was less than a minute total, and that had a long boat ride and was a little pricey. Clearly a much different situation but I think it shows there is a line for me where if something is incredible and unique and life changing enough, it's worth it.

So like. If the woman flashing me had three boobs maybe I'd do it...!

Fire Emblem Fates I bought (ages ago), but I have no idea if I should get the "Neutral" 3rd version path.
I heard that plotline made people mad at how bad it was.

The plot isn't really any worse than the rest of Fates. People almost universally think the maps and general game balance are way worse though. I know FOMO is hell but I can only recommend Revelation if you really really like Fates already.

To me his warpath moment when you first accuse Kristoph in 4-4 is pretty memorable and one of the only moments that shows he actually deserves his reputation as a great prosecutor. Unfortunately once you weather that he's more or less broken for the rest of the case and just lets you do whatever you want.

Edgeworth in PW1 isn't intended to be likable (I think Takumi has said as much), but he's a fully formed character.

This is absolutely just a "we were writing the game in the late 90s/early 00s and didn't understand what makes fans like a character yet" thing though. There's no way Edgeworth was ever going to be not likeable with his character arc lmao

Yep. In theory I'm fine with police unions if they do things like push higher ups for more training, fewer hours, mental health services, etc. It's not like police inherently shouldn't have a union. But realistically our police (and arguably the whole institution of policing as we understand it currently) are so incredibly corrupt that the union just makes things worse.

I didn't call PictoQuest bad exactly, just half-baked, and you've already discovered why: the RPG elements are irrelevant, the picross isn't perfect, and it's easy. Not sure if there's better picross on Steam but there are 10+ on Switch I can confidently say are better.

I needed fast forward in Engage for the cutscenes because I didn't want to skip them completely but they are so fuckin slow.

also when goldmary gets attacked by 7 heroes that all have brave assist it takes fucking forever even with all animations turned off.

Maybe it makes me a buzzkill but even as a kid I felt all three OG banned episodes kinda deserved it. One has people shooting realistic guns at children, one looks like garbage (and literally causes seizures), and one has a 12 year old in a bikini contest*. Arguably none of them really fit the tone of the series, either.

Banning Tower of Terror and Tentacool & Tentacruel, on the other hand, feels needless and overreactive.

*this is obviously not the reason the episode was banned but let me have this

There's definitely been a rise in translation purism, but I feel like I saw a lot of mocking of AA's localisation back in ~2007 too. Specifically the Japanifornia stuff.

I think I only really used fast forward in FE4 during the arena? Presumably the incredibly long time the arena takes without fast forward is meant to be the drawback that balances out how it gives you a bunch of EXP for every unit every chapter for free with no risk, so I feel like it kinda breaks the game to skip through it in a few seconds. but also that bad design choice is on them. i'm not waitin around for it.

The only game on there I've played is PictoQuest, a half-baked picross RPG. It really highlights the low bar of getting a "very positive" rating on Steam when that game can pass it just by being inoffensive, even when it does nothing well.

That said, I'm appreciating the mini reviews.

Honestly I kinda don't like any of the Feys except Mia, and even then only when you play as her.

I've got Ace Attorney on the brain right now and definitely thought this was about an announcement of the worst AA spinoff imaginable.

I guess I don't think "Robin is a crossdresser" is a particularly good setup, and I definitely don't give them credit to write that in 2013 in a way that holds up in 2023. I agree that being straight up transgender would have been better but a) it was 2013 so they'd have probably fucked that up too lmao and b) it's still super super easy to read Robin as genderfluid because they still use the "male" personality pretty often after the reveal. If they fully switched to just girl mode after the reveal I wouldn't like the character at all.

Anyway yeah this is all the reason I say "problematic fave" and not just fave, it definitely wasn't handled well.

What was the setup? It's been years since I played Dual Destinies.

Anyway I remember thinking it was a copout so I agree with that, but I still like the character. Maybe that's the bigger hot take, I really liked the whole cast of 5-3. My most wanted AA game that will never ever happen would be one about Hugh, Robin, and Juniper after they become a defense attorney, prosecutor, and judge.

SoJ is the worst (main) game in the series.

Callisto Yew is one of the best minor characters in the series. I could have a whole game of Callisto Yew.

1-5 is on the level of the other final cases in the series and better than a few of them.

Robin Newman is the problematic fave.

I'm not sure how hot these takes are actually.

...huh. You should go back and play Axiom Verge 1 again. I liked 2 quite a lot, but it was more of "just another good Metroidvania" rather than "something special" as I felt about AV1.

Honestly I have a huge backlog so this probably isn't in the cards right now, but it's definitely more likely than before I played AV2.

Axiom Verge 2 (PS5)

I had zero expectations going into this, because I can't remember a thing about the original Axiom Verge except thinking it was just "fine", and this one seems to have a mixed reception even among people who liked the first one. Then I started playing and it all started coming back to me -- the unlikable protag, the weird sci-fi setting, getting ordered around by giant stone statue heads... yep, this is Axiom Verge all right.

Anyway, this game kicks ass. That said, it's also weird and I can understand why some people wouldn't like it. Instead of focusing on platforming or combat, AV2 is more about throwing you into a weird alien world and saying, "okay, explore and figure shit out". The backstory is pretty convoluted with a lot of names and events to keep straight, but the actual story does quite a lot and is pretty clever despite how minimal it is.

Also I think the OST is absolutely great, especially the moodier pieces like Monsoon:

Y'know, there was a whole topic on B8 a while ago about this game looking shitty and now that I've played it, it just... doesn't? Like it's not stunningly beautiful but it looks like a pretty nice looking SNES game. The areas do tend to be fairly monochrome but at least it gives them all their own identity. I'll take it any day over something like Metroid Dread where most areas were identical.

Towerfall is the current (non-Jackbox) favorite of my friend group; on Switch you can add up to 6 players. My old housemates and I used to play a lot of Trivial Pursuit Live but that's really only good for exactly 4 players.

Yeah my issue with posting more (in this topic and the main one) is that most of the games I end up playing are very short, which means I usually finish them in one or two sittings. So I post some thoughts on the whole thing but there's not much room for like, running commentary. The incentive of an extra nomination might help, though I imagine I still won't be able to talk about, like, Space Funeral for 5 posts.

I agree with you about Engage's writing, I think, though I would call Fates' extremely childish as well. But Engage's is more like a Saturday morning cartoon that exists to sell toys, while Fates is like the shittiest fanfic on FF dot net circa 2004.
