"It's AA" was the perfect reason to not make it murder. Apollo vs. Phoenix alone gave that case tons of gravitas. The murder doesn't add to the tension at all. The "damsel in distress" thing at least had a twist on it because, as it turned out, Maya was actually not in distress.

I like the DLC case. Just having a Phoenix/Maya case again is worth the price of admission for me. A lot of people hate it. Don't expect something on the scale of 5-6. It's mostly simple fanservice and not much else.

Yeah, sometimes Ace Attorney is bad about treating the player like they're dumb by treating something blatantly obvious like it's a twist, and that picture is one of them.

I think the hook for 1-4 is in the intro when you see Edgeworth with the gun.

Oh yeah, seeing Diego Armando in the opening cutscene in 3-4 and immediately knowing that he's Godot was pretty great, too.

I think 3-3 grabs your attention right away with Phoenix supposedly having lost a case he was never a part of. Then the picture of Iris in the magazine in 3-5 was a big hook for me. Apollo meeting Hobonix for the first time was a great moment, too.

fingerprinting the suitcase might be the worst part of this entire game because the game misleads you into thinking you should examine the handles and places where it opens, even going so far as to give you an incomplete and unusable fingerprint, never cluing you in on the fact that you have to dust one of the stickers instead

Man, that opening scene in the office is super great. Like, nothing flashy happens, but just the interaction between Apollo and Dhurke feels so real. Apollo's emotions are so raw in a way that you've never really seen from him before. It's just really well written.

And then traveling back to Kurain Village as Apollo was super hype. It was like worlds colliding.

Trucy: What did Mr. Dhurke mean when he said that he's "the man who raised you," Apollo?
Apollo: The truth is, I grew up in the Kingdom of Khura'in. Did I, uh...never mention that?

I just love this exchange for some reason. It kinda shows how private Apollo is in general and how much hurt he's buried inside.

6-5 time

Before I start, I just want to say that I think giving Apollo the lead role here is one of the ballsiest things the series has ever done, especially considering Phoenix has been the one leading the charge in Khura'in up to this point. I was pleasantly surprised when I first began this case and saw Apollo's silhouette in the background on the bottom screen, but even then, part of me anticipated that he would eventually pass the baton on to Phoenix to finish the job.

Athena is the investigation partner for investigation day 2, and it's a pretty lengthy one (albeit broken up by a Phoenix/Edgeworth segment, which will limit Athena's total a bit). She's Apollo's partner during the first trial day, too. Maya's role in 6-5 isn't that big either. I mean, yeah, Maya will definitely end up on top because of 6-6, but I'm just curious how close the final margin will be.

And Ema probably beats Franziska, but she's probably going to need 6-6 to do it. I thought she'd beat her more comfortably than that. She's definitely not catching Trucy now.

also Blackquill might actually stay ahead of Pearl

her role in 6-5 is so minute that she might not have 50 lines in her

I'm also kind of curious to see how close Athena/Maya actually ends up being. Athena might be able to pass her with 6-5, although Maya should pass her back with 6-6 if she does.

Ema/Franziska for 10th place looks like it's going to come down to the wire, too.

I liked Datz as a witness because he kinda reminded me of the Tiger. He shamelessly lies all day and just revises his next lie based on whatever contradiction Phoenix points out. As I said as I was playing it, Phoenix does some darn good work breaking his testimony, too. He just broke it too much.

Plus, you never expect the day 1 witness to be the killer anyway unless it's a single-day case (as 6-4 is, so you might be inclined to think Uendo must be the killer for all the time they dedicate to him). It's just a matter of what big twist the testimony leads to next, and Datz's was pretty good in that regard.

Nahyuta's characterization is often kind of cryptic and hard to read. At the end of 6-3, he tells Phoenix he owes him a debt of gratitude, and at the beginning of 6-4, he references that he intends to pay that debt and considers it paid by the end of the case. Nahyuta behaves differently in 6-4 than he does in other cases in some ways, so I wonder if he considers this "taking it easy" on Athena or even trying to instruct her on how to be a better lawyer.

although honestly I'd probably get more dialogue from the newer games if I went for all the wrong answer dialogue because they've made a lot more of that instead of just having the same three generic wrong answer dialogues from the OT

I'd say it's mostly in investigations, because even though the investigation segments are generally longer, they aren't resulting in a lot more lines since there's not as much back and forth bantering between the characters.

Although testimonies in the newer games tend to be shorter than the OT, too, so I guess that's fewer opportunities to get bonus convos from pressing. Plus, you can't press during a Mood Matrix or a Divination Seance either.

I think the OT just has way more optional dialogue than the other games do. Like even with free investigations returning in SoJ, it feels like there aren't as many random convos to be found and they're not as lengthy.

It also means I have zero problems with the writers going "annnd that was dumb" and not following up with this plot point.

I'm pretty sure that's not why that happened. Of course, even if it was, I don't trust their judgment of what's dumb and what's not if they decided 4-0 was the correct followup to the OT.

NeoElfboy posted...
Annnd this would be the "perpetuating bad ideas about relationships" thing I was talking about.

well yes poor communication and pretending to be your identical twin are generally not good in relationships but again almost every fantasy romance perpetuates bad ideas about relationships, even the ones that are supposedly good, because they are, in fact, not real

besides, the circumstances of Phoenix/Iris are so absurd and would never happen in real life so I'm not going to get up in arms about it teaching people bad things about romance because I don't think anyone is actually gleaning relationship advice from it, unlike other fictional romances
