I read a really good article recently about how textbooks are an outdated practice (although I think it was about science/medicine in particular) because, by the time everything gets proofread, approved, and published, there is likely a new idea or concept and a lot of the published information becomes obsolete. I understand that this maybe doesnt apply to every grade level, but it made me think differently about the role of textbooks in the classroom.

I had the exact opposite response as that dude when I read you guys don't use textbooks. It's a good thing.

where I live, a lot of people are immigrants, first-generation Americans, or mixed with different ethnicities, so even if you're "different", a bunch of others are too or are close to someone who is, so it was never an issue.

I was born in the US, but my parents are from east Africa, and because of that, I've often been regarded as "African" by those who found out regardless of their race.

and when I went to visit my parents' homeland, I was seen as a westerner or "muzungu".

but I'd be fine with either.

It's so wild how people want others to never feel at home. But there are also good people who will try to make anyone in their area feel as comfortable and welcomed as possible. Those are the diamonds.

It's not even like I'd judge him if he was just honest about it and didn't try to force his insecurities on the world. The latter is the only part that irritates people. If he was just like "I don't like eating ice cream in public cause I feel like a kid" Id respect his honesty and move on. Instead, it's this whole battle for him to make everyone else live within the limits of his personal insecurities.

I have a similar short story.

My best friend's mom had just died like a month before. We we're playing Ape Escape 3 and the boss keeps going "Why don't you run to your mommy". It was awkward as shit. But eventually he just yells at the tv "I CAN'T" and I busted out laughing >_>.

To put more context on it. It blends into our style of humor. We pretend we're way more upset at irritating things cause it let's us get that energy out while at the same time getting a laugh.

So I think me laughing saved it from being awkward, but I still think about how wrong it felt.
