Invincible (concluding soon)

Oh man it's ending? I might have to catch up. I stopped reading shortly past 100 right after the Robot arc ended. How's it been since then?

I've been digging it quite a bit, good stuff! It's up to 142 at the moment, and it ends with 144, just a couple months away. I had been expecting it to go forever like Walking Dead back in the day, but it feels like a good run, plus Ryan Ottley the artist seems to have been kept really busy with this detailed terrific art.

I think we'll see some at some point, or at least by an indie filmmaker. Anime has only been big in America for a relatively small time, picked up in the late 90s with DVD and whatnot.

Some of the earlier favs like Battle Angel have had movies in the works forever, that one written by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez hits next year. It might actually be cool, will wait and see there.

Agreed the Fist of the North Star one is an entertaining B-movie, not great but it's amusing. I did like Speed Racer.

(I just gotta post a classic FoTNS song, unrelated to the live-action American one)

Invincible (concluding soon), Savage Dragon, and 2000AD (and Judge Dredd Megazine) are some of the best longrunning creative runs around, I recommend 'em!

I'll go with Light on this one, both are great fun characters though. Not a lot of great villainous protagonists to root for, granted I know many rooted for L, but for me it was the Light show.

Especially among western fans (Saber's super popular in Japan, but much less so outside it AFAIK).

Rin's also an incredibly minor character in /Zero, so I'm not sure where that part of your post is going

What I meant there, was after watching Fate/Zero I assume I'll love Saber and think she's great and a hero etc, and then it'll be like hey hold on why is she second fiddle to Rin here. Or why is protagonist not going with Saber etc. Just random speculation on my part though.

It's interesting hearing thoughts on these different routes. I'll add that HF trilogy (when it's done) to my watch list too. Also it seems people think the manga adaptations are only ok as well, random note.

Just not a very good show......but you liked Tsukihime so you're probably he time <_<

I know that people who dig the visual novel don't like that anime, I'm not sure what this he time thing is but it sounds ominous. Since Tsukihime, at least the anime, is a shorter and simpler story than Fate/Stay Night, I could see that anime which is considered a bad adaptation not working for me even if I liked Tsukihime.

I'm sure the whole thing is less wacky than it sounds to an outsider. But it is interesting how it all turned out, where a light novel based prequel and an adaptation of the middle of 3 routes is the best option for anime watchers of this thingy. But I will jump in and try these thingies.

UBW is Rin's route of the visual novel, while the original anime mostly covered Saber's route (With some other stuff thrown in). Hence the disparity.

There's a bit more to my question there though.

Interesting, I'll go ahead and put Fate/Zero on my watch list first, thanks folks!

And some random conjecture, not asking for spoilers, but I notice the original Fate/Stay Night anime featured Saber more on the promo material, and UBW features Rin more. And Fate/Zero seems to be more about Saber. So I guess it'll be weird maybe that Saber potentially gets less focus than Rin in UBW? Or overall do fans not mind having UBW have the better adaptation than the more Saber heavy Fate/Stay Night?

It was mentioned that Fate/Zero would spoil stuff for UBW as well though, so spoilers go both ways possibly? I guess why I was intending to do UBW is so I've seen some version of Fate Stay Night first, since that was the first thingy. That said, does either one spoil anything as big as if a protagonist or main love interest in the other one dies or anything like that?

I have seen the Tsukihime anime and liked it, I hear people didn't dig compared to the visual novel, random note.

I find One Piece is still watchable, and terrific, but I prefer to watch in marathons of at least 30+ episodes at a time. Often more like 100+ episodes at a time. It would be nice if they just had an off-season and paced it faster, but to me it feels not quite as slowed down as DBZ was, and people still dug DBZ.

On the Fate/ talk earlier, I had been planning on watching UBW and then Fate/Zero. Is there any downside to doing that? I had seen a couple episodes of the earlier Fate Stay Night anime and hear it's just okay, so was probably going to skip to the UBW version.

Since there are 3 versions of a story (routes from a game), I can get that seeing all the possible paths would make you see all the possibilities, but generally just one way through a story that is well done would be enough for me. Or at least a starting point.

Anime is cool folks!

Eh, I like Twin Snakes better. But either way, it's the best series around! And, at least from personal experience, you only seem to be very anti-Twin Snakes if you already loved the original MGS. I had played some MGS since my older brother liked it, but I actually got into the series with Twin Snakes and MGS3, then MGS2. Played all of those in January 2005, which is also why I got on these boards in Jan 2005. And was on here and being pumped anticipating MGS4, which also rocks, and gotta love PeaceWalker and MGSV.

"Any way's the ideal way." sounds right, just find your way into the series and keep on espionaging.

TopicIs 2017 the best year for video games since 1998?
Psycho_Kenshin

For me 2017 felt like kind of a slower year for releases. Agreed BoTW (still haven't beaten that yet), Odyssey, and whatnot are great. Yakuza 0 which hit in English this year is another big one, and Sonic Mania is cool. Persona 5 is cool and charming but I didn't get super far before putting it on the backburner. It'd potentially make a better anime series than a game to me, but I dig that it really hits the spot for a lot of people.

If we included Final Fantasy XV, which hit just over one month prior to 2017, that'd help 2017 as well, loved that game. 2016 was pretty good for me.

I'll go with the mentioned 2015 appreciation, MGSV (though divisive) has not been topped for me yet. And Arkham Knight I felt was a terrific and underrated game.

Super Mario 3D World is a terrific game by the way, enjoyed it a lot, it hit the spot quite a bit in 2013, and GTAV is another huge hit with me for that year. Lot of great years to choose from.

Gotta love MGS. I also loved MGSV, and it's story I found well done, though minimalist and different from what we're used to in the series.

For games that may end up taking two years to beat, Breath of the Wild may be one of those for me. Played a zillion hours the first few weeks it was out, have done maybe half of it, haven't played it in six months or something. But I'll beat it for sure. Random note, to me BoTW and FF XV both felt a bit like the MGSV's of their series, where recent Western open world style of gameplay where you go up against a bunch of similar forts etc, like it was some of the more notable examples of old classic franchises trying those things out. And I dig all of those.

MGS, I agree it has the best boss fights of any series, and I think the cardboard box is the best piece of equipment ever.
