YG is creepy, but Mixnine was fun. It's got that Produce 101 editing. Highlights were the countryside agency (FM), and the awkward YG and Brave Brothers meeting. From those shown in ep.1 I like:

further on the unit - dramatically, it makes sense to have a variety of contestants. certainly there are interesting reasons why some groups fail, but mostly it's just luck and timing, and you can only tell so many of those stories. it's good to toss in a hype trainee, or a charming actor in there.

i kind of like how transparent they are on the unit about how talent isn't that important. it was maddening whenever trainees on broduce were asked about their low/falling rank, and they had to give an answer about working harder.

i should post jun (u-kiss)'s performance since i've gone back to it a few times. i haven't paid much attention to the group since he joined, but he's got stage presence.



next episode, i hope we get matilda screen time. i also need to know why donglim and jiae (wassup) didn't make it.

the unit was subbed by the next day, but nothing for mixnine yet huh.

ha, tbh i'm not even that big of BTOB fan, but this comeback is super good. also, i just realized i posted about a cube artist in every single post so far, and i hate myself for it.

For the Unit, the premise is what drew me to it initially so I can see why they would lean into it for the previews even if the actual participants have drifted away from that. It's funny, because Dal Shabet's Subin was one of the first participants announced which changed my expectations for who qualifies very early on. She pulled out due to conflicting schedules which, yeah, if you're in a position to have conflicting schedules then you probably don't belong here. I suspect it was harder to fill the roster with only true flops, because most of them have probably moved on years ago. It makes sense that it had to be less successful rookies or groups that have been popular enough to stay active without a breakthrough. Plus if you don't have some big names on your show about flops, it will flop.

super glad to finally see some Saebyeol in that video (bad song though - what is that chorus).

I finally got around to Tacoma. I had a good time, but it didn't fully land for me. The story was too clean and uncomplicated for the themes it was invoking. The storytelling device is a lot of fun, but even there I wanted a bit more from it. I enjoyed the individual chunks of time, because they were small, in-media res, and didn't tell a full story, so it kept a sense of mystery. You can wring every detail from a scene, but it will raise at least as many questions as it answers. The problem for me then, was that the next chunk of time was always the next important bit of plot, and it's not particular satisfying to piece it all together, because it's a very straightforward narrative. There's no real thematic connection between the story and the way you experience it either, as cool as it is.

I don't know, I'm criticizing it for what it's not at this point, but scrubbing through the ghosts of capitalism is evocative in a way that makes me want something a bit weirder. Basically, I think I want this but based on Walter Benjamin's Angel of History.

Who are lights and what is happening?

highlight fans, and nothing big, i'm just talking shit.

basically, btob's song has been #1 on the charts for 3 whole days amidst tough competition, which is a great accomplishment and fans are ecstatic. highlight isn't doing as well as expected, so their fans are accusing cube of manipulating btob's rank. more recently, they accused an article which drew the comparison, and made fun of highlight as being bought by cube. the same company that they used to complain about for being inept is now savvy and has money to throw around apparently. i hate that i'm defending cube a bit, but maybe the point where you stop blaming cube when highlight underperforms is when they've left the company.

it's not just that though, since those are the extreme cases. it's also the excuses about how btob is winning just because they have a public-friendly, season-appropriate song, as if it's that easy. as if they didn't work hard on this album, and spent years on variety shows raising their public awareness. as if btob just flipped the right switches to produce a massive hit, which highlight refused to do so because they're above it. highlight doesn't play it safe, you see. instead they'll put out a song that sounds the same as their last song but slightly worse.

mostly it started when cube scheduled btob's comeback on the same day as beast's 8th year anniversary, which is sleazy, but it mostly serves to make cube look desperate. really, it's mediaplay that probably benefits both groups from the competition. like, the main complaint before was that cube is trying to have btob ride highlight's coattails, but that's clearly not what's happening so what's the problem now? would they have said anything if highlight was doing better than btob like everyone expected? maybe don't make btob's best result since debut about your grievances with cube.
