I think the cult book makes it easier no

You get that book pretty late though

I remember trying to save everyone in one run was a nightmare. Like it's not even worth trying until you max your stats, and even then you have very little downtime and need to do things in a really specific way.

Do you set waypoints? They tend to haul ass to waypoints more than if they're just following you, I think. Still might stop to swing at a random zombie though, which is really frustrating, but iirc waypoints were the most reliable way to move them.

I don't know anything about KoA but Dragon's Dogma had some of my favorite combat from that gen. If you're looking for narrative and character development it doesn't have much, but if you wanna fight & climb on (mostly) traditional fantasy RPG monsters then it's super fun. Good variety among the combat classes and they all feel different enough/have enough unique skills to be worth trying out. The pawn system is cool if you're into creating characters and you can hire other people's pawns as well, which grants them RC (currency) and whatever gear/items you decide to give them. It also handles postgame/NG+ really well.

is D-Dog better than Quiet, because it's fun just equipping a sniper rifle and wiping out a base with her

D-Dog is better at scouting and Quiet would always tend to shoot the helmet off of a soldier, which just made things harder. That was just my experience, though. I'd always go nonlethal, too. If you favor lethal then Quiet is probably better.

I never messed with Alchemy either (except getting that one skill that increases mutagen bonuses after respec'ing way later) but I dabbled with the magic a bit. Increasing the sign intensity means enemies get ingnited more often, so it's a nice option to be able stop enemies in their tracks with either Igni or Axii and then charging up one of those big overhanded heavy attacks rather than just dodging all the time. Parrying is a thing too, though I usually only do that if I'm fighting one or two dudes.
