The horror that erupted there late Wednesday night brought out Brandon Simone and his neighbor, Molly, who live in apartments down the street from the bar.

Molly, who asked that her last name not be used for her own safety, opened up her apartment and meager first-aid kit to survivors suffering broken bones, open gashes and mental anguish while they awaited medical treatment.

Following that sleepless night, Simone and Molly drove together three miles down the road to VC Defense, the only brick-and-mortar gun store in town.

Simone, 35, is a single father who previously vowed never to have a gun in the same home as his kid. But while his teenage son Ethan skateboarded outside, he asked the shop's owner what he needed to do to buy a 9-millimeter pistol.

Molly filmed VC Defenses handgun display with her phone and sent the video to her boyfriend, insisting that he immediately buy one.

For John Von Colln, VC Defenses proprietor, the duo were among an unusually steady stream of customers that day. Many of them expressed the same sentiment: they had come to the gun store because no place feels safe anymore, and they felt ill-equipped to confront the next mass shooter or armed home invader.

Theres a documented phenomenon in America following mass shootings in which gun enthusiasts stream to dealers to buy up contested accessories like bump stocks before they are made illegal. Von Collns customers on Thursday didn't appear to be those types, at least not during the couple of hours he allowed a reporter to hang out in his store and speak with customers.

A banker wearing business casual, designer glasses and a gold Rolex inquired about concealing a sidearm under a tucked-in dress shirt.

I need more holsters because I am not going anywhere without my piece now, he announced.

Von Collns salesman, a burly long-haired man in a black beanie who stood before a wall of rifles, counseled him on an ankle holster. If he ever found himself in a shoot-out at the mall, the banker could quickly unholster and unload while lying on his back.

Von Colln said he knew he was in for an unusual day at the office when he threw on his work outfit of a Dont Tread on Me t-shirt and cargo shorts Thursday morning, less than twelve hours after gunman Ian Long opened fire on the crowded bar. The crime scene just up the 101 Highway was still a chaotic carnival of law enforcement and media as several helicopters buzzed overhead.

By noon Thursday, he could barely finish paperwork on a previous sale or bring out a new gun for a customer to handle before having to return to the button to let somebody else in.

As new customers cycled through the store, the constant chatterbesides general expressions of hatred for the shooterwas about the six unarmed, off-duty law enforcement officers who were reportedly at the bar during the shooting. Their lack of weapons was a presumed consequence of a California law barring firearms in bars.

At least there couldve been a chance of preventing the shooting if they were armed, said Von Colln.

Mike Rowan, a former corrections officer who teaches gun handling courses at nearby Trigger Burst Training Center, said he fielded calls all Thursday from potential clients motivated to get gun permits following the bar shooting.

Some of his teaching focuses on fending off an active shooter, and Rowan said he expected an uptick in business similar to the one he experienced after the Las Vegas concert massacre last year.

Theyre just frightened, Rowan said of this new client base. Unfortunately these mass shootings are good for business, and I say that very solemnly.

The John V. Lindsay Wildcat Charter School in the Bronx
Christopher Sadowski
A Bronx charter-school teacher recruited a student to help him score $4,000 worth of marijuana and he beat the teen senseless when he found out the kid pocketed the cash, police sources said Friday.

Kevin Pope, 48, also stole the teens iPhone and wallet and threatened to sexually assault his mother if he didnt get his money back, the sources said.

I will kill you if I dont get my money! Pope allegedly told the student after pummeling him. I want my money in a month!

Pope, a science teacher at the John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy in Hunts Point, was arrested at the school Friday morning and charged with assault and robbery in the attack a day earlier.

Pope had asked students around the school back in June if they knew a drug dealer and they put him in touch with the teen, who promised he could score a large stash of drugs from his contact in Manhattan, sources said.

Pope gave the kid $4,000 for the hefty purchase, the sources said.

The unidentified teen told cops he met the dealer near Central Park but was told that the quantity of drugs he was seeking would cost $7,000, sources said.

The student then blew off the transaction and spent the money, according to the sources.

Three months later, shortly after the start of the new school year, Pope found the teen about two blocks away from the Lafayette Avenue building and demanded that the money be returned, sources said.

When the student said it was gone, Pope allegedly socked him in the face multiple times and took his iPhone 6, gold chain and wallet containing the boys school ID and two MetroCards.

A source said that Pope threatened to have him beat up again and have his mother sexually assaulted.

The student needed three surgical staples to close gashes in the back of his head, sources said.

Sources said the incident is on surveillance video.

The student attends Popes school, but its unclear if the teen was in that teachers class.

A Department of Education spokeswoman directed all questions to the charter school, which declined to comment.

Pope was awaiting arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court on Friday night.

A man is to be sentenced next month for preventing the burial of an elderly neighbour, whose body lay undiscovered in her Belfast home for around two years.

Robert Sharkey (24) appeared at Belfast Crown Court yesterday, where he admitted all but one charge against him following the discovery of the remains of Marie Conlon (68).

When the charge was put to him in court yesterday, he replied: "Guilty." He also entered guilty pleas to breaking into his neighbour's home and taking batteries, tools and a coffee mug, and also of stealing both 50 in cash from her, and a First Trust debit card.

He admitted using her bank card to buy food totalling 5,988.39 from Domino's Pizza over a period from October 2015 to 2017 and buying goods from Sainsburys to the value of 3,279.80 from July 2016 to October 2017.

The only charge he denied was breaking into the flat between June and October 2015 and stealing a Bank of Ireland debit card.
