For the record Im not sure if Washington will go undefeated (tough matchup @ OSU this weekend) but the committee should at least be consistent in how they judge teams imo

Both matter. I'm singling out their defense because it's the reason they're below the other undefeated teams.

When I talk about statistical rankings I'm mostly referencing SP+. Which essentially captures scoring margin and adjusts for quality of opposition among other things. How Washington stacks up:

Michigan: Offense (7) Defense (1)
UGA: (5) (5)
Ohio State: (15) (3)
FSU: (9) (9)
Washington: (4) (41)

One of these things is not like the others
One of these things doesn't belong

Washington's defense sucks and they've had a couple of struggle wins over terrible teams. They'll never say it publicly but I still think the committee pays close attention to metrics like SP+ that factor in things like opponent strength and they rate somewhere in the 7-10 range in most that I've seen. 5 is about where they should be

Washington holds most of their opponents under their averages, and in the second halves of games they are absolutely shut down defensively, but no one watches their games so no one really knows that they just look at box scores.
